  • RED MESS ~ HI-TECH STARVATION …. review

Red Mess, Thiago Franzim (guitar), Douglas Labigalini (drums) and Lucas Klepa (bass/vocals), started their musical journey in Londrina, Brazil but after what the band describe as “a decade of messing around” decided to relocate to Europe, the trio finally settling on Berlin, Germany as the base for their operations. A few of you out there will already be familiar with the band thanks to the EP’sCrimson” (2014), “Drowning In Red” (2015) and “Phantom Limb” (2022) as well as their full length releases “Into The Mess” (2017) and “Breathtaker” (2022), the latter of which we reviewed on these very pages. For those not up to speed with the band however Red Mess jam a blend of rock styles that has led the band to describe themselves as “not your regular alternative grunge psychedelic progressive sludge post-punk hardcore groove garage crimson crooked stoner rock band“. This month (August 2025) sees Red Mess releasing their third full length album “Hi Tech Starvation” (Noisolution) a collection of tunes from a band who have a history of delivering ass-kicking groove’n’roll of real quality

Huntress” kicks things off, a fuzz heavy opus that’s part grungy metal and part off-centred desert rock with those grungy elements leaning more towards Alice In Chains than they do Soundgarden and the desert rock part of the deal coming more from a Queens of the Stone Age angle than a Kyuss one. Vocals over this song are delivered in clean and slightly cracked tones that although are not especially powerful are nonetheless both impressive and effective. Following number “Inexistant Colours” finds Red Mess for the most part operating in Nirvana-esque loud/quiet/loud territory around a similarly up and down vocal but then sees the band shifting into a more traditional rock groove for the songs final quarter, this section of the song enhanced with searing bluesy lead work. “Ransomware” is a song that straddles territory somewhere between punk rock and its close cousin hardcore, the vocals here a touch more visceral and raw, the guitar tones a touch more waspish and the rhythms a tad less pummelling, well that is up until just around the five minute mark when out of the blue things take a stoner-doomic turn and we are presented with thick slabs of dank riffage and pounding percussion supporting monastic flavoured vocal incantations. Next song “Intravenous” is an unusual but engaging blend of heavy psych and stoner/desert rock salted with totally unexpected elements of Oasis flavoured Brit-pop in its vocal inflections while its follow up “Xenon“, an instrumental, is full on Kyuss worship. Penultimate tune “Kind Villain” is deliciously rowdy and rocking, this also carries a little Oasis styling in the vocal department. Final song, “Uncanny Valley” is a shapeshifting behemoth with grooves that constantly sway between stoner-metallic and grungy beneath vocals that one minute boast a throaty stoner-ish dynamic and the next are being delivered in a buoyant rap-like meter, as closing numbers go this is a MONSTER!

Banging from its opening note to its last Red Mess’Hi-Tech Starvation” is a delightfully eclectic blend of raucousness, restraint and accessibility, an album that will delight grungers” and “metalheads” alike…as well as all those who fall in-between.

  • The Bryden 2-Step (for Amphibians) Part 1 + Part 2 (National Health, 1978)

National Health is one of the most intricate and jazzy Canterbury Scene bands, strictly linked to Hatfield And The North, keyboardist Dave Stewart’s band from 1973 to 1975 after his previous experiences with Egg and Khan, but also drummer Pip Pyle’s and guitarist Phil Miller’s ex band. For their 1978 album “Of Queues And Cures”, National Health also included multi-instrumentalist John Greaves of Henry Cow fame. The two parts of The Bryden 2-Step (for Amphibians) respectively open and close this record and are two splendid specimens of Canterbury sound, mixing up melodies, jazz-rock passages and folk-rock elements in a warm, diversified and intricate structure.

    A real cabinet of curiosities…

The two sections are rather different in mood (the first one being more up-tempo and jazz oriented than the second one), but there is a strong consistency between them, reinforced by the recurring main theme and the presence of the same guest musicians: Phil Minton (trumpets), Paul Nieman (trombones) and Georgie Born (cello), whose instruments give a wider sonic landscape to this split suite. A special mention goes to the main theme, one of the most charming Canterbury-branded compositions ever and to the constant search for originality throughout these overall 13 minutes of unpredictable music.

PROPTER HAWK UNLEASHES RAGING NEW SINGLE “SORRY!” – A SELF-LOATHING

    ANTHEM FOR UNDERACHIEVERS

Hard-hitting rock & rollers Propter Hawk are back with their latest single, “Sorry!” – a blistering, no-holds-barred number about the frustration of failing yourself. Fueled by distorted guitars, pounding drums, cavernous vocals and unfiltered emotion, the track delivers a gut-punch to anyone who’s ever felt like they’ve come up short.

“Sorry!” isn’t just an apology—it’s a scream of self-reproach, a furious self-interrogation wrapped in bluesy licks and bellowing vocals. The song blends the aggression of classic British blues rock with the modern intensity and refreshing musical outlook Propter Hawk is known for.

The track delivers Propter Hawk’s signature mix of retro rock goodness blended with deeply personal lyricism and fans of the Jeff Beck Group, Led Zeppelin and Queen will find themselves right at home in the track’s visceral elements. “We wanted this song to feel like a psychedelic blues explosion” adds Brian Derro, the band’s nimble fingered bassist. Despite its title, “Sorry!” makes no apologies and sets the stage for Propter Hawk’s busy upcoming tour schedule. “We are excited to release the EP in June and are really proud of the quality of songs we’re getting out there. We’ll be playing across Canada this year in a busy summer festival season and hope to connect with as many rock loving music fans as possible!” mused lead vocalist Malorie Jo Blake.

Produced by Carlin Nicholson and recorded at Toronto’s Pineship Sound, “Sorry!” is the follow up to the band’s political anthem “Time Won’t Wait”, and the title track from their upcoming EP set for release in June of 2025. The Toronto based rock ensemble has experienced an exciting start to the year with international radio play, a sold out release show and national TV feature, and now looks forward to another issue of their signature musical numbers.

Join Propter Hawk in rejoicing your inner aimlessness with the release of “Sorry!” on all streaming platforms and at their single release show at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Canada on April, 4, 2025.

Propter Hawk Single Release Party for “Time Won’t Wait” Live at Rivoli, 334 Queen Street West Toronto, ON M5V 2A2 Canada

Propter Hawk unites with some of Toronto’s best local bands to celebrate the release of their new single “Time Won’t Wait.” With the return of Propter Hawks HORN section, the Boneheads, Feral Minks, and The Young Scones will bring you on a high-voltage journey. Whether you’re a die hard fan or just looking for an epic night out, these bands promise a wild ride. Grab your tickets and hold them dear! See you on Jan 31, 2025!!!

Established in 2020, Propter Hawk is a rock and roll outfit from the ambiguous corners of Toronto, Ontario. Commixing influences and sounds, Propter Hawk is Humble Pie, The Beatles, The Band and Otis Redding tossed in a burning barrel at the dark end of an unmarked street. Resurfacing from the pandemic with a plethora of material, the band laid down their finely tuned tracks at Pineship Sound in Toronto with Carlin Nicholson and Mike O’Brien of the staple Canadian rock band Zeus. Employing vintage gear and a live horn section, Propter Hawk established the foundation of their sound on their debut, self titled record. After the release of their 3 singles (Theatre Of The Whole World, Telephone, and Clean Old-Fashioned Hate) and now a full length album, this fiercely dedicated and experienced group of musicians is ready to reveal their distorted vision of a new era of rock and roll.
