  • Mod Lang – Borrowed Time

There has already been considerable acclaim for the the debut album from Detroit’s Mod Lang, and every bit of it is richly deserved. Every now and then, a truly great new pop band comes on the scene and treats our lucky ears to something genuinely special. Mod Lang is one of those bands, and the attention it’s getting makes me really happy. Released on the ever-dependable Just Add Water Records, Borrowed Time has been out for only ten days and has already sold out an entire vinyl pressing and amassed over 130 supporters on Bandcamp. That’s an immense response, and it shows you that something truly remarkable is cooking in the American power pop/pop-rock underground.

My first reaction to this record was that it sounds like the ’60s — but in a way that comes off more timeless than retro. Vocalists/guitarists Antonio Keka and Alex Belfie have crafted ten songs that combine pop-rock classicism with a legit freshness that is all too often missing from music that draws from the ’60s and early ’70s. This is exciting new music, not cosplay karaoke. The influence of everyone from The Beatles to The Raspberries to The Everly Brothers to (obviously) Big Star is worn on this band’s sleeve. And yet you get the sense that this band is looking forward, not backward. So much of that comes down to the superb material. If you’re going to write melody-driven rock songs, you ought to write melodies like these that are absolutely intoxicating and twice as memorable. The lead vocals and harmonies hit the spot, and you won’t hear a band better equipped to pull off the ringing guitars and punchy bottom end that make music like this so hard to resist. But ultimately what comes through the most is that these four individuals are having fun. They’re playing rock ‘n’ roll, and they’re doing it joyfully. This is that rare band that will go over well with just about any music lover aged 9 to 90. Trends come and go, but great songs never go out of style. If you aren’t a believer in pop music, Mod Lang will make you one. Hit up Just Add Water and order yourself one of those newfangled compact discs!

  • Perfums is Pere Canal’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
A warm breeze seems to rise from the Mediterranean as Pere Canal’s “Perfums” begins to unfold.

Perfums is Pere Canal’s Single Out Now

The mood is instantly uplifting, and yet there is also a refined elegance beneath its brightness.

Sung in Catalan, the track embraces the singer-songwriter tradition of that region, grounding the song in cultural identity while allowing it to breathe in a contemporary frame. That choice alone gives the piece authenticity and depth.

The instrumentation shines with clarity. The tones feel bright and crystalline, the melody glows with a natural lightness. This is not surface-level charm. The chord progression reveals careful craftsmanship, shaped by a composer who clearly understands structure and emotional pacing. Each harmonic turn feels intentional, and each melodic line carries quiet confidence.

Canal demonstrates significant compositional ability throughout the track. His experience becomes evident in the way he balances simplicity and sophistication. The arrangement never feels crowded, yet it remains rich in detail. Subtle rhythmic shifts keep the momentum alive, while the melodic phrasing draws the listener closer with every verse. The song grows organically, maintaining coherence from beginning to end.

There is, undeniably, the spirit of Barcelona within “Perfums.” You can almost sense the warm wind moving through narrow streets, the sun reflecting off stone facades, and the relaxed pulse of Spanish daily life. The vocal delivery reinforces that atmosphere. Canal sings with sincerity and warmth, and his tone carries intimacy and assurance. The language itself adds musicality, enhancing the lyrical flow and giving the track a distinctive character.

At the same time, the poetic quality of the composition elevates it beyond a simple feel-good tune. The harmonies support the emotional message, and the melodic arc reaches the heart without excess. It’s music that invites you to pause, breathe, and appreciate small details.

Pere Canal’s “Perfums” stands as a beautifully crafted single rooted in tradition yet alive with present-day vitality. It radiates warmth, culture, and compositional maturity. I strongly recommend it.

  • Big Boots and Wide Brimmed Hats is Ker’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
A bright, desert-toned guitar solo cuts through the silence and sets the tone for Ker’s Big Boots and Wide Brimmed Hats.

Big Boots and Wide Brimmed Hats is Ker’s Single Out Now

The sound is clean yet expansive, echoing across imaginary plains before the rhythm section slides in with confident ease.

Almost instantly, you want to grab your keys, start the engine, and disappear along endless American highways. There’s motion in this track.

Ker’s voice carries subtle vintage nuances that recall legendary songwriters of decades past. There’s a trace of dust in the timbre, yet also warmth and clarity. Because of that balance, he bridges eras without sounding nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake. At times, you can sense the spirit of a modern John Denver, especially in the way he paints landscapes through melody. Still, Ker stands firmly in the present, shaping those influences into something personal and grounded.

The song’s uplifting character defines its core, yet gentle flashes of melancholy drift through the verses like memories passing before your eyes. Those moments add dimension. They suggest reflection rather than regret. The lead guitar continues to float beneath the vocal lines, adding a subtle Americana touch with a slightly psychedelic shimmer. This undercurrent enriches the arrangement while keeping the melody front and center.

What makes Big Boots and Wide Brimmed Hats resonate is its sincerity. The track doesn’t chase trends. It celebrates place, community, and open skies. It feels like a heartfelt tribute to Montana, where wide horizons stretch beyond sight and stories linger in the wind. The imagery emerges naturally through the music; you can almost see those beautiful landscapes Ker evokes.

Although the production remains polished, it never overshadows the songwriting. The structure stays clear and direct, allowing the emotional arc to develop organically. The interplay between rhythm and lead guitar creates an expansive atmosphere that hints at freedom without losing focus. This is not just a road song; it is a hymn to belonging and gratitude.

Ker delivers a genuine, straightforward piece of songwriting here. The track breathes optimism while honoring memory. It invites you to travel, to remember, and to appreciate the land and the people who shape your path.

    Expansive!

Big Boots and Wide Brimmed Hats is Ker’s Single Out Now

Ker is a songwriter whose work is deeply rooted in gratitude, community, and a strong sense of place. Drawing inspiration from the landscapes and people of Northwest Montana, Ker crafts songs that reflect the warmth, resilience, and generosity found there. Encouraged early on by the local music community—beginning at Music One in Kalispell—Ker developed a writing style that feels grounded and sincere.

Rather than fitting neatly into a single genre, Ker writes songs of the “country” rather than “country” music—stories shaped by open land, respect for nature, and human connection. With an uplifting and optimistic spirit, Ker’s music honors the quiet strength of everyday people and the enduring soul of the land they call home.

  • Director Of Unauthorized Wayne Static Documentary Claims He Was Offered Money To Halt Production – @thebeast

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Director Of Unauthorized Wayne Static Documentary Claims He Was Offered Money To Halt Production

Los Angeles, CA — The controversy surrounding the unauthorized documentary about Wayne Static and Tera Wray continues to intensify. Director Matt Zane now claims he was offered a substantial financial payout in exchange for abandoning the project altogether.
According to Zane, he received a call from a production company attempting to broker a deal between himself and Static-X management.

“I got a call from a decent-sized production company that was attempting to work out a deal between myself and Static-X management regarding my documentary, saying they would basically be willing to essentially pay me to not make the film,” said Zane.

Zane says he refused the offer, but alleges that further attempts followed.

“A day or so later I get a call from Josh Vargas, another director friend of mine who’s done some notable stuff. He says he has an even bigger project for me and can start getting me money by the end of the week as long as I drop the Wayne and Tera project. Obviously the timing was incredibly suspicious. I politely declined.”

The estates of Wayne Static and Tera Wray have previously issued a cease and desist order against the production. Despite the legal pressure and what he describes as financial incentives to step away, Zane insists he will continue forward.

“I’m self-funding it now. Whatever it takes. Wayne and Tera asked me to do this and it will become apparent when the movie is released.”

The documentary, which remains unauthorized by the estates, is currently in development. Zane has stated he intends to proceed independently.

  • OVERKILL Taking Over – Revisiting A Thrash Metal Classic From 1987

My first taste of the invincible OVERKILL was their second studio album Taking Over. Released back in 1987, this masterpiece of thrash metal has stood the test of Metal time, for me. Taking Over should be filed under mandatory old-school Metal, if one is to create such a list.

I purchased this album first on vinyl at a regional record store chain called Strawberries Records & Tapes, while living in Connecticut. This retail chain no longer exists, closing its doors in 2006. Years later I bought Taking Over on CD. I never owned this gem on cassette.

My favorite song on Taking Over is the powerful thrash hym: In Union We Stand. To this very day, this song galvanizes my Metal soul and creates positive chills through my body. Electro-Violence encapsulates everything that a thrash song should be; speed, aggression, explosive and short guitar solos with a blistering rhythm section that induces moshing and head-banging madness.

Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth is still my favorite thrash vocalist of all-time. I always felt that his vocals are so unique that no other vocalist remotely sounds like him. This OVERKILL lineup, with Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth were truly pioneering and legendary, with drummer Rat Skates, bassist D. D. Verni and guitarist Bobby Gustafson.

    • Taking Over is the last OVERKILL studio album that drummer Rat Skates would perform on.

    Taking Over – Track List:

    01. Deny The Cross

    02. Wrecking Crew

    03. Fear His Name

    04. Use Your Head

    05. Fatal If Swallowed

    06. Powersurge

    07. In Union We Stand

    08. Electro-Violence

    09. Overkill II (The Nightmare Continues)
