Following the recent announcement of their upcoming North American fall tour dates, The Mars Volta have officially announced the next phase of their cryptic interactive campaign: a brand-new live album titled âLucro Sucio; Unfinished Businessâ.
The first single taken from the record, titled Cue The Sun / Alba del Orate is now available on all streaming platforms.
The project marks a major milestone for the group, serving as their first official live release since 2005âs Scabdates. Far from a straightforward live recording of their most recent studio album, âLucro Sucio; Los Ojos del VacĂo,â this new release is a deep reinterpretation of the source material with an added twist: the bandâs invitation for fans to directly participate in the album-making process offering fans access to live recordings captured during their 2025 tour.
The initiative originally began with a cryptic countdown clock hosted on a standalone website. Upon its conclusion on June 9, the band unveiled an interactive digital experience featuring audio previews from multiple live recordings and a voting mechanism that allows fans to choose which specific performances make the final cut for the album. In classic Mars Volta fashion, each track is represented by a symbolic visual marker tied to the city where it was captured, a rollout that reflects the band’s continued embrace of unconventional, immersive release strategies while expanding the creative universe surrounding âLucro Sucio; Los Ojos del VacĂo.â
Capturing The Mars Volta as they explore new boundaries of their creative expression, this forthcoming live album documents exactly how the new material evolved on stage while highlighting the band’s renowned live intensity, improvisational spirit, and ever-expanding approach to performance.
âLucro Sucio; Unfinished Businessâ will be available across three distinct configurations, allowing physical collectors to choose between a Special Edition CD Digipak or a limited Edition 2LP Vinyl set to be released on October 16th as well as a launch on all major streaming platforms as a Digital Album enhanced with Dolby Atmos spatial audio on September 4th.
Pre-orders are now live at www.themarsvolta.com

The Night The Numbers Died opens the EP with a contemporary and futuristic vibe. The lyrics are incisive, reflecting a society reliant on numbers. It evokes imagery similar to the virtual numbers in the film Matrix. The narrative poses a thought-provoking question: what if everything collapses and the power is cut off? In such a scenario, we would be forced to roll up our sleeves and engage in real work. This song combines pop and rock elements, creating an engaging listening experience. The artist exhibits a strong vision through this track.

Following this, Formerly Wealthy Support Group emerges as a standout track. Its introduction recalls bands like System of a Down. The transition into hard rock sprinkled with 80s influences is striking. This song presents a more dystopian theme, accompanied by a nocturnal atmosphere. The decline of ultra-wealth signifies a looming reality, revealing the superficiality of our contemporary existence.
The EP as a whole showcases a strong artistic vision. It has been recorded with modern instruments that do not stifle creativity. Instead, they amplify the artist’s core message. The music serves as a tool to awaken consciousness. It invites the listener to scrutinize reality through a lens of irony and sharp insight.
In The Night The Numbers Died, the melodies are catchy and resonate well. The lyrics provoke thought while maintaining an upbeat tempo. This dynamic tension between melody and message is a highlight. The listener is encouraged to reflect on existential questions. The song effectively channels frustration towards consumerism and digital dependency.
The duo of tracks shapes a narrative that is urgent and impactful. The artist presents a critique of contemporary society’s fascination with wealth and status. This theme resonates throughout the EP, echoing the sentiments of many listeners. The modern recording techniques enhance the vibrant energy, making each track distinct yet related.
Each song serves a purpose, pushing listeners toward introspection. The innovative style bridges generations of rock enthusiasts.
The Night The Numbers Died is a bold start to this ambitious EP. The artistâs vision is clear and influential. With tracks like Formerly Wealthy Support Group, the exploration of darker themes continues. Listeners are encouraged to grapple with their own perceptions of reality. The work serves as both entertainment and commentary. Spectral Twist invites audiences to ponder significant questions while enjoying a rich auditory experience.

The song begins with a thunderclap, heralding an impending storm. This intense opening establishes an atmosphere that grips the listener. Hellkern Warriors introduces their gothic sound. The vocals remind me of the style of Peter Steele from Type O Negative. The music carries an essence of the 1980s, enveloping listeners with an atmospheric and dark aura unique to their approach.

Incorporating industrial, electronic, and alternative rock influences, the band successfully blends various genres. Their style is reminiscent of the likes of David Bowie, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. This fusion creates a rich and multifaceted sonic experience. The mood conjured by the song reflects a rainy street, where the asphalt mirrors the glow of illuminated signs. The imagery is vivid and evocative, evoking dystopian scenes akin to those found in “Blade Runner.”
The piece possesses a hypnotic quality, almost ritualistic in nature. It immerses the listener in a trance-like state. The construction of the song sparks thoughts and reflections, enhancing its hypnotic quality. It’s a song that not only engages but also invites introspection, encouraging listeners to delve into their thoughts and feelings.
One of the standout aspects of this track is the unique sound of the synthesizers. Emerging from the enveloping atmosphere, these elements create a hauntingly beautiful sound. The vocals are drenched in reverb, adding a layer that feels prophetic, as if the singer serves as an oracle conveying deep truths. This treatment furthers the songâs enigmatic quality, separating it from typical alternatives in the rock genre.
As the track unfolds, it builds a sense of urgency while remaining grounded in its atmospheric elements. The contrast between the industrial sounds and the gothic undertones provides a rich, textured experience. There is a dynamic relationship between instruments and vocals, a push and pull that keeps the audience engaged throughout the duration.
The song embodies a twilight essence. With each listen, new shades and nuances emerge, revealing the depth of the composition. This depth invites repeated engagement, as listeners may find themselves continually discovering new themes and layers.
This track will undoubtedly resonate with anyone who appreciates music that blurs the lines between genres and provokes thought.
Despite its dark themes and atmosphere, the song ultimately offers a sense of catharsis and revelation. It has the potential to reach a broad audience, appealing to fans of industrial, gothic rock, or anyone drawn to music rich in narrative and emotive power.
As the track fades, listeners are left with lingering echoes that resonate in mind and heart. A journey through sound, emotion, and reflection is what Hellkern Warriors delivers in this remarkable single.

Debut Album Dread Cycle Out August 14th
The new video from Tasmanian death metal devils THE ABSOLUTION SEQUENCE is now streaming. “The Nightlight Sigil” is the third single off the band’s highly-anticipated full-length album, Dread Cycle.
Vocalist Shawn Wells calls the song the most personal track on Dread Cycle. “The Nightlight Sigil is a tale of family trauma, toxic home environments and the way in which one is treated in the aftermath. Often those who have suffered the most where they are meant to feel protected are shamed and forgotten. The aim of this is to keep the conversation alive, and begin to heal these deep wounds.”
