(Andy Synn prepares to burn it all down again with the new album from Black Metal anarchists Trespasser) Despite what you might think, I don’t necessarily have to agree with a band’s beliefs in order to enjoy and appreciate their music (the sheer number of Christian, Satanic, or otherwise religious bands I’ve written about and recommended […]
You’re never going to believe this, but there’s a new Guided By Voices album on the way. I know we all assumed that they’d said everything they had to say when they released their 42nd LP Thick, Rich And Delicious last year. It’s been, what, four months since that one came out? And five days since guitarist Doug Gillard announced his solo album Parallel Stride? I just pictured them with their feet up on the table, toasting to a complete career. But no, the GBV train rolls on.

Interview With Soul Fracture – West Heat #3 The Bunkhouse, 01.03.26
1. Please introduce yourself for anyone who may not know you. Tell us a little bit more about you as a band.
We’re Soul Fracture, a groove-driven metal band focused on heavy riffs, deep grooves, and undeniable rhythm. Blending styles from metal, rock, funk, and even disco, we create a sound that’s crushing, infectious, and built to move people as much as it hits hard. Formed originally in late 2024 with a full set list ready to rock. Influences include Rick Astley, Steps and 70s era Cher.
2. What made you want to participate in the Metal To The Masses South Wales 2026 campaign? Have you had previous experience? Or is this your first time?
We had all competed before with different bands, all getting to the final, we know what it takes and that it’s hell of a ride.
3. M2TM is all about supporting your local scene. How important is the local scene to you as a band?
Without the local scene there is no live music, no next big thing, and we don’t get to perform without out, so selfishly it’s rather vital.
4. We have a slightly different set up this year with Heats/Quarters/Semis taking place at Bunkhouse/Green Rooms. Have you played the venue before or is this your first time? Are you excited to get on those stages?
Soul Fracture haven’t played either venue before, but we all have in previous bands, both venues have had renovations in recent years so be exciting to get on a fresh stage and Swansea crowds always deliver the hype so we’re excited.
5. What are your expectations from being a part of M2TM?
We’re approaching Metal to the Masses with an open mind and high energy. Our expectation is to give everything we have on stage, connect with potential new audiences of the supportive metal community, and prove what Soul Fracture is about. Learn from other bands and push ourselves. If we can grow as a band and leave our mark along the way, that’s a win for us. 6. What would getting to our Day Of Wreckoning final and the possibility of playing Bloodstock Festival 2026 mean to you?
The Day of Wreckoning sounds like such a fun day out for all involved with the whole takeover almost a mini-festival in itself that would be great to be a part of. All bands love playing festivals, they always have amazing crowds and such an opportunity to win over new fans, and to play one as big and established as Bloodstock would be a real privilege
7. We encourage all the bands in M2TM to try and check out the other bands, who are you most looking forward to? Who should your fans also try to catch? We don’t want to spoil the performances for ourselves, we’re looking forward to be impressed and everyone bringing their A game. Metal is such a wide genre of music and everyone has their own tastes, we encourage the audience to give a try to bands they haven’t seen before and maybe usually wouldn’t listen to.
8. Tell us in five words why people should come and see your band?
American Football have just unveiled the first single from their highly-anticipated LP4.
Ahead of the record’s release on May 1 via Polyvinyl, the beloved Midwest emos have dropped lead track Bad Moons in all its eight-minute glory.
“Bad Moons is actually a Frankenstein of two different demos we’d been passing around for quite a while: one playful, with children playing and toy-pianos plinking; one brooding, with guitars screeching and drums bombasting,” explains Mike Kinsella.
“I had already been singing the ‘in the dark’ mantra over the latter, so the biggest challenge for me was thematically bridging the innocence and buoyancy of the first act with the deep despair of the second. I decided to begin the song as a child. Or, rather… two. Stacked up in a single trenchcoat; secretly, reluctantly living the life of a grown man, accruing all of his missteps and guilt along the way. By the end, these missteps are almost spilling out of the boys.
“A cathartic confession, hopefully at least somewhat relatable to anyone listening who’s ever lived a life.”

Album Review: Blunt Knife Castration – Blood & Oil
Reviewed by Matthew Williams
There was absolutely no way that I was passing up on the opportunity to review a band called Blunt Knife Castration, as the name intrigued me massively. However, what intrigued me further was that they are UK sludge metal band, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a bit of sludge now and again to clear out the senses.
Blunt Knife Castration is the metal project led by Kent based Simon Bryant, and they draw out aspects of metal, noise rock, doom and crust punk, and engulf them in thick musical layer of sludge, to produce some highly creative and filthy sounding songs. Opener “Miasma” guides you down the hole with what appears to be an extract from some sort of 70s/80s horror or sleaze movie, which they draw influence from. This gives way to “Gunshot Selfie” and the scream instantly hits you before the bass line pops up to lead you further into their darkened evil lair. Its riff heavy, with strong drums, blistering sounds, and a rhythm that gets your head moving.
They have a range of musical influences, Eyehategod, Neurosis, Swans, and this is evident on their tracks, as you’ll hear on “Degeneration” which is superb from start to finish. The tempo is spot on, with scary vocals and a brutal edge to the music, allowing the solos to flourish. “Lone” has a similar sinister feel about it, but I get a bit of blackened thrash in this one, as the pace sounds faster, which is great to hear. You then get properly bludgeoned with a blunt knife on the opening to “Guilt Pig” which is one of those songs that needs to be played obnoxiously loud to annoy your neighbours.
I’m enjoying the depraved and threatening sounding aspects of their music, however they mix it up at the start of “Swallow” as it’s a bit slower over the spoken word, but then a third of the way in, they are back with more evil intent. Their love of sleaze and general smut of video nasties is clear on “Play Victim” as it’s a hard-hitting song which rips along at a frantic speed, before the slow impending doom kicks in. Album title track, “Blood & Oil” is another nasty sounding song, bleaker and more depressing, especially the bass, which further enhancing their fearsome reputation.
“Menial Mutt” covers all areas, pounding drums, heavy bass and hostile guitars, before the vocal teases you in a threatening manner. “Coward” has more of an edge to the song that some of the others, but again, the rhythms are excellent and an enjoyable listen, ahead of the final song “Skinny Fingers”, an almost eight minute journey of ups and downs, full of slow foreboding eeriness which keeps you enthralled.
Five years have passed since Nick Steed joined , making the move which made him slow down with other projects – and leaving and as only albums by, respectively, NS5 and THR33 – but the keyboard player continued his solo … Continue reading →
Monstrosity Returns with “The Atrophied” Ahead of New Album and European Tour
US death metal stalwarts MONSTROSITY are back, and they’re not holding anything back. The band has unleashed “The Atrophied,” the latest single from their upcoming album Screams From Beneath The Surface , set to drop March 13th via Metal Blade Records.
After a seven-year hiatus, MONSTROSITY emerges with a lineup that fuses the old and the new: drummer and founding member Lee Harrison leads the charge, alongside long-time guitarist Matt Barnes, the triumphant return of original bassist Mark Van Erp, and ex-Massacre vocalist Ed Webb, whose guttural and ferocious delivery injects a fresh but familiar energy into the band’s sound.
“The Atrophied” was the first track written for the album, and it sets the tone for what fans can expect: a relentless, technically precise, and emotionally charged death metal journey. Harrison explains, “‘The Atrophied’ contains all the hallmarks of a classic MONSTROSITY song. It surges with ferocious energy, weaving through devastating riffs and intricate rhythmic shifts. Ed commands the storm with a cinematic intensity, and the guitars carve out chaos and melody in equal measure.”
Guitarist Matt Barnes adds, “When we finally played the finished track together, it felt more like an epic saga than just another death metal song. ‘The Atrophied’ might be our most musically and emotionally complex song yet, tightly condensed but still grand in scope—think a 15-minute Rush or Iron Maiden epic distilled into pure death metal.”
Recorded across multiple studios to perfect their sound, the album blends modern production with classic death metal authenticity. Drums, bass, and mixing were handled by Jason Suecof at Audiohammer Studios, while vocals, guitars, and mastering were completed at the legendary Morrisound Studios with Jim Morris, Mark Prator, and BJ Ramone. The album’s cover art by Timbul Cahyono is a fully organic creation, embodying the raw spirit of the band.
Screams From Beneath The Surface will be available on CD, digital, and a variety of vinyl editions, including US-exclusive gray marble and orange smoke variants. Pre-orders are available now at metalblade.com/monstrosity.
MONSTROSITY will hit European stages this spring on the Screams Across Europe Tour 2026 , supported by Bio-Cancer, Reject The Sickness, and Deadwood. Highlights include festival stops in Luzern, Salzburg, and Zagreb, plus club shows across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
With Screams From Beneath The Surface , MONSTROSITY proves that after decades in the game, they’re not just surviving—they’re evolving death metal itself, one crushing riff at a time.
