The Prince of Darkness has officially entered the “Uncanny Valley,” and not everyone is happy about it. Following the announcement that the Osbourne family has partnered with Hyperreal and Proto Hologram to create a permanent, interactive A.I. avatar of the late Ozzy Osbourne, fans have taken to social media to voice their concerns. But during a May 22 livestream on his YouTube channel, Jack Osbourne fired back at the critics, insisting the project is a “tasteful” and “high-level” tribute that Ozzy himself explicitly approved before his passing in 2025.
Addressing the “lame” accusations head-on, Jack clarified that this isn’t a simple chatbot or a cheap rendering. The project utilizes “Digital DNA,” a patented end-to-end system that captures an authenticated likeness, voice, and motion.
Jack said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Here’s the thing: it’s gonna be so tasteful what we’re doing. It’s not gonna be fucking lame… And it’s really complex what we’re doing. This isn’t just like hooking up an image of my dad to ChatGPT. This is going to be… Yeah. This is some high-level technology that we’re gonna be working with, and it’s gonna feel very real, and it’s kind of wild how it will be utilized. But it’s awesome. It’s really cool, and it’s something that I think my dad would be into. ‘Cause we actually talked about it before he passed, about doing something like this. So, yeah. I know he would be into this.”
The avatar will appear in “Proto Luma” units—life-size, 86-inch 4K volumetric displays capable of spatial computing. This means “Digital Ozzy” won’t just stand there; he will be able to have real-time, unscripted conversations with fans, responding in his own voice with answers tailored to what the real Ozzy would have said.
While some fans feel the digital resurrection is “scary” or “disrespectful,” archival footage from The Osbournes podcast reveals that Ozzy was surprisingly open to the technology. When asked in December 2023 about using A.I. to create new music in the style of his late guitarist Randy Rhoads, Ozzy didn’t hesitate.
“Well, you know what? I’m open for anything, if it was good quality,” Ozzy said at the time. When asked if the future of A.I. made him nervous, the Prince of Darkness gave a characteristic reply: “No. The cat’s out of the bag. You can’t undo it.
