A trailer has been released for the upcoming Bobby Rush documentary King of the Chitlin’ Circuit, which will premiere on PBS beginning November 23, 2026.

Produced by Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the documentary takes an intimate look at the legendary bluesman’s life and career, following Rush on the road while exploring the experiences that have shaped his more than seven decades in music.

The film features live performances, behind-the-scenes footage, and personal reflections from Rush as he looks back on his journey from the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta to stages around the world.

Rather than focusing exclusively on his musical accomplishments, King of the Chitlin’ Circuit examines the challenges, sacrifices, and perseverance that have defined Rush’s career. The documentary follows the bluesman through performances and quieter moments on tour, including stops as far away as Lugano, Switzerland.

Rush earned his reputation as the “King of the Chitlin’ Circuit” through decades of performing in clubs and venues throughout the South, building a devoted following with his distinctive blend of blues, soul, funk, and showmanship.

His career has since brought him international recognition and multiple Grammy Awards, but Rush has remained committed to performing and keeping the blues alive for new generations of listeners.

Directed by Alex Warren and produced by Taiwo Gaynor, the documentary features cinematography by Robby Piantanida.

King of the Chitlin’ Circuit begins airing on PBS on November 23.

The best new metal songs this week start with a band that hasn’t released anything since 2023 and a riff that was written on a trip to Nashville and finished in a day. Staind’s ‘Ghosts’ is the song of the week: Mike Mushok’s heaviest idea in years, Erik Ron behind the desk, Aaron Lewis sounding like Aaron Lewis, and a finished ninth album somewhere behind it. Behind it: Silvertomb open their second record with a dream about being shot, Insomnium borrow three members of Amorphis, Carnifex close their Sumerian debut, We Came As Romans hand a track to Headwreck, and Doro delivers the ballad. Six songs, in the order you should hear them.

Staind – Ghosts

Song of the week. ‘Ghosts’ arrived on Tuesday, October 14, with a video, through Alchemy Recordings and BMG, and it’s the first new Staind music since Confessions Of The Fallen in 2023. The story of how it got made is the reason it sounds the way it does: Mike Mushok came back from a writing trip to Nashville with the central riff, he and producer Erik Ron, whose recent credits include Bad Omens, Godsmack and Papa Roach, built the whole instrumental in one day, and Aaron Lewis added vocals afterwards. Lewis’s own review: ‘It’s a little different, it surprised all of us. It’s definitely Staind.’

He’s right on both counts. The riff is lower and uglier than anything on the last record, closer to the band’s first two albums than to the radio years, and the chorus is pure Lewis, remorseful and enormous. It is a Staind song in the way that matters, which is that you know who it is within four bars.

What’s behind it is the real news. The ninth album is finished, produced by Ron, and now has a title: The Space Between The Darkness And The Light. Lewis confirmed it this week in an interview with Audacy, called it ‘a hell of a record,’ and said he knows it will come out ‘soon’ without saying when. The band describe ‘Ghosts’ as ‘the start of a new chapter, with more to follow.’ The next chapter has dates: a 27-show second leg of the Break The Cycle 25th anniversary tour, March 4 in Manchester, New Hampshire to April 16 in Cleveland, with Seether and Hoobastank on every night and Hinder on all but the last.

Silvertomb – Brain Matter/No God

The third single from The Interpretation Of Nightmares, and the one that opens the record. Kenny Hickey says it was the first song written for the album and that it ‘opens the record with the heavy, thematic riff that returns’ across it; the lyric, in his words, describes ‘a nightmare in which the dreamer is shot and experiences his own death inside a dream.’ A two-part title, a slow doom riff that’s going to come back when you least want it to, and Hickey’s voice doing the thing it did on ‘Love You To Death’ when Peter Steele stepped back. It’s the most Type O thing Silvertomb have released, and it isn’t trying to be.

The album is out November 13 on SPV, with ‘No Way To Live’ and ‘Graves In The Sky’ already out ahead of it, and a release show at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn the night after. Hickey and Johnny Kelly are the Type O Negative half of the band; the rest came up through Agnostic Front and Sheer Terror, which is why the heavy parts hit like hardcore and the slow parts drag like Brooklyn.

Insomnium – The Hour Grows Late

Netherworlds, Insomnium’s tenth album, is out today on Century Media, and the song they chose to mark it is the one with three members of Amorphis on it. Tomi Joutsen sings, Tomi Koivusaari plays guitar and growls, and Santeri Kallio plays what guitarist Markus Vanhala calls an ‘acid-trippy synth solo’ through the middle. Vanhala’s description of the track: ‘a longer adventure in music, venturing a little further into the progressive dark side of the album’s moon.’ On the guests: ‘The fact that these two ideas came together felt like such perfect synchronicity that we simply couldn’t not make it happen.’ And on Koivusaari: ‘I’m especially happy to hear good old cookie monster, old-school Tomi Koivusaari growling.’

The video, by Jari Heino, hangs white ribbons through a forest; they’re karsikko, a Finnish and Karelian memorial-tree tradition, and the album, Vanhala says, ‘deals with themes of loss, growing old, and missing all the people and creatures.’ Jens Bogren and Miiro Varjus produced, which is the sound of modern melodic death metal done by the people who defined it.

The two bands tour North America together from November 17 in Boston to December 19 at Irving Plaza in New York, with Hinayana opening, and Europe from January 22. Expect this song, with the guests, every night.

Carnifex – Licking Love From A Knife

The third single from More Than Misery, out November 6 as Carnifex’s first album for Sumerian, and the one Scott Ian Lewis calls his favourite on the record. It closes the album, and you can hear why: it’s the slowest, heaviest thing they’ve put out this cycle, the breakdown lands like a door shutting, and the lyric is about getting out of something that was killing you. Lewis says he hopes it ‘speaks deeply to our fans that have survived toxic relationships.’ The title does the rest.

‘Roses & Rotting Corpses’ and the title track came first; this is the one that explains what the album is for. Carnifex have been at this since 2005 and are one of the few bands from deathcore’s first wave still getting heavier rather than prettier. Bloodstock has them for Sunday, August 8, 2027; the North American run with All Shall Perish is already out.

We Came As Romans – where did you go? (feat. Headwreck)

Not a new song, a new version, and the best of the batch. We Came As Romans are reissuing last year’s ALL IS BEAUTIFUL… BECAUSE WE’RE DOOMED on November 6 through SharpTone as CIRCULARITY, with four new tracks and a set of reworks where each song gets handed to another band. ‘where did you go?’ went to Headwreck, the Australian newcomers WCAR toured with down there. Dave Stephens: ‘We became friends with Headwreck while touring together in Australia, and we’ve been fans of their music for a while now.’

The rework strips the original’s gloss and gives the chorus to a voice with more grit in it, which suits a song about absence; WCAR have been writing about absence since Kyle Pavone died in 2018, and this is one of the better ones. The rest of the reworks are a who’s-who of modern metalcore: Bury Tomorrow wrote a new chorus for ‘b2tm O’, Dayseeker took ‘one by one O’, HEAVENSGATE took ‘red smoke O’, and ‘culture wound O’ was recorded with ladrones entirely in Spanish with flamenco guitar, because Stephens learned the language for his wife’s Colombian family. New tracks include ‘WHEN EVERYTHING IS STILL, DEAD SILENT’ with Make Them Suffer.

Doro – You R Not Alone

The second preview of Wild At Heart, after September’s ‘Rock You 2 Death’, and the ballad. Doro’s own description: ‘This song totally gets under your skin, has a very positive message and hits right in the heart,’ and she thinks it ‘could become a second Für Immer,’ the 1987 Warlock song she still closes shows with. That’s a high bar and she knows it; what the song has is the thing she’s always had, a voice that treats a ballad like a battle hymn, over a chorus built to be sung back by a few thousand people.

Wild At Heart is a special release rather than a full studio album, on her own Rare Diamonds Production through Edel, timed for the Winter Magic tour that starts December 11 in Germany: side A is new and rare studio recordings, side B is live tracks from the 2024–25 tour, including ‘Touch Of Evil’ with Alissa White-Gluz. Nine tracks, formats up to and including a liquid-filled vinyl with red glitter in it. The album comes out in December; the exact date hadn’t been confirmed at press time.

Netherworlds is out today. Carnifex and the We Came As Romans reissue both land November 6, Silvertomb on November 13, and Doro in December.
