California heavy metal outfit PainDemic are featured in an in-depth interview with bassist Gary Monardo and vocalist Rob Perkins , discussing the band’s origins, musical direction, lineup, songwriting, and debut single FWF , short for Fuck With Fate .

Emma Ogier is a young alt-rock singer-songwriter from Houston who seems to be on a very sharp upward trajectory. Ogier was a teenager during the pandemic, and she developed her twangy and oblique sound in relative isolation. Then she moved to Nashville and released a series of independent singles, starting in 2023. She recently signed with Lost Highway and assisted on Dominic Fike’s new single “Small Town.” In the months ahead, she’ll play Austin City Limits, tour with Hovvdy, and do some shows as a member of Bright Eyes. Now, she’s ready to announce her full-length debut Fly 1111.

Los Angeles band Niis have shared “No Flowers,” the latest single from the forthcoming new EP “Play Niis” – set for release October 23rd on Rise Records. Available today on all streaming platforms, “No Flowers” is joined by an official music video directed and edited by Marië Ramos. The new track follows the EP’s lead single “Earthquakes,” which arrived earlier this month.
 
On “No Flowers”, the band taps into their trademark intensity, with vocalist Mimi Doe delivering “I just wanna feel alive” through a barrage of jagged guitars and distortion.
 
“A lot of the songs on this record are about fitting into societal monotony,” Doe explains, “We forget to put ourselves first by doing things that bring us joy and make us feel something, or anything. And that’s something I really wanted to capture with the lyrics.”

Produced by Austin Coupe and Michael Shuman, on “Play Niis” the Los Angeles punk band embraces a more melodic, expansive side of themselves without losing the visceral energy that has defined them on prior releases. Written through periods of heartbreak, upheaval and uncertainty, the six-song EP is ultimately about the search for joy and human connection in an increasingly disconnected world—music as a way to feel alive, process pain and find something beautiful in the chaos.

Niis —pronounced “Nice”— have spent the past several years building a reputation for music that is as confrontational as it is deeply human. Formed in 2020 by vocalist Mimi Doe and guitarist Ryan McGuffin, the band introduced themselves with “Not Niis” (2020), followed it with “Must Be…” (2022), and released their debut album “Niis World” in 2025. Now joined by bassist Isabella de Vroede and drummer Jonathan Salvo, Niis return with “Play Niis”, their Rise Records debut. If their earlier records were defined by rage and volatility, “Play Niis” finds the band leaning into melody, vulnerability and connection while continuing to confront the world around them.

The shadowy Ordo Vampyr Orientis evade expectations and definitions. Like another mysterious American black metal label Wergild, Ordo Vampyr Orientis have no social media and have avoided all attempts to investigate them. They reroute all focus to their music, which ranges from Waltzing symphonic black metal to hypnotic raw black metal and, now, lovesick warlock black metal with Befouled Malediction, whose track “Ritual” we’re premiering today before their debut, Desperate Necromancy, releases at the end of October.

Lovesick is, of course, downplaying the situation on Desperate Necromancy. As the title indicates, the record tells the story of a warlock who haphazardly learns necromancy to bring his loved one back from the dead, only to discover that the resurrection wasn’t without its drawbacks. It’s a classic monkey’s paw tale of which “Ritual” is the inciting action. Much like necromancy itself, the track is part witchcraft and part science. It’s quietly refined, though not to a degree that the raw and tragic aspects are overlooked. The melodies mirror the warlock’s adrenaline as he’s on the verge of bringing his love back to life, with the track’s middle section, in which the percussion nearly dissipates, marking his trepidation. Just by following the structure on “Ritual,” you can deduce which step of the process the warlock is undertaking and his reactions to it. It’s effective storytelling in black metal, putting the genre’s attributes to narrative work.
