  • Ozzfest 2027: Festival Confirms US Return After Villa Park

    ozzfest-2027

Ozzfest 2027 will play the United States as well as the UK, the festival confirmed on 21 September with a teaser showing Ozzy Osbourne beside the British and American flags and the line ‘Ozzfest will come to the UK and US’. It will be the first American Ozzfest since the New Year’s Eve show at The Forum in 2018 and the first without Ozzy, who died on 22 July 2025.

The UK edition is already booked for Villa Park in Birmingham, and Jack Osbourne has said it will be one day only. What nobody has announced yet is the American city, the date or the headliner Jack said was a couple of weeks away. That was in August.

    What Ozzfest Actually Confirmed

Two flags and one sentence. That’s all the post had, but it’s the first time the festival itself has put the US in writing.

Sharon Osbourne had been saying this since the start of the year. In February the Ozzfest accounts started teasing a comeback, which we covered when the first hints appeared. At MIDEM in Cannes she said ‘Yes, absolutely. Yeah, we’re gonna do it,’ and we reported her confirmation in March. On The Osbournes Podcast she laid out the plan: ‘We want to do two days in Aston Villa and then come to America. We want to hear from everyone where we should go in America.’

So the US was always the plan. Until today it was Sharon’s plan. Now it’s official.

Villa Park Is Booked, And It Shrank To One Day

In August the festival tagged Aston Villa, named Villa Park as the home of Ozzfest 2027 and promised ‘more info on everything coming soon.’ Sharon was still weighing one night or two when Villa Park was confirmed.

Jack settled it on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio on 19 August. ‘We did a couple of two-day Ozzfests years ago, but it’s just gonna be one day,’ he said.

It’s the right venue. Villa Park is where Ozzy and Black Sabbath played Back to the Beginning on 5 July 2025, 42,000 people in the stadium and 5.8 million more on the stream. Seventeen days later he was gone. Birmingham will sell that show out on grief and gratitude alone, and it should. There’s a reason Birmingham sits at number two in our ranking of the best metal cities in the world.

Why The American Show Is The Real Test

Villa Park is a homecoming. America is where Ozzfest has to prove it’s still a festival.

Remember why it exists. In 1996 Sharon tried to get Ozzy on Lollapalooza and got turned down, so she built her own. The first Ozzfest was two dates in October that year, in Phoenix and Devore, California. By 1997 it was touring every summer. It was Ozzy’s name on the poster, but the reason it mattered was the second stage. System of a Down played it in 1998. Slipknot played it in 1999.

Sharon still talks about it the way she did then. ‘There was never anybody jockeying for position,’ she said on the podcast. ‘It was a summer camp.’ Her answer to what a 2027 Ozzfest needs is the right one: ‘We’ve got to find a lot of young, new talent, because that’s what Ozzy would want.’

Jack has promised at least one unsigned artist on the bill. That’s the detail I’ll be watching. One unsigned band on a stadium stage for a warm-up slot is a gesture. A real second stage full of bands nobody’s heard of yet would be Ozzfest.

The Headliner Problem Jack Already Admitted

On 19 August Jack said the main headliner would be announced ‘in the next couple of weeks.’ It’s been more than a month and there’s no name.

He also told Page Six Radio why it’s hard. ‘It’s really difficult now,’ he said. ‘Who’s not got their own festival?’

He’s right, and Ozzfest is partly to blame for that. Slipknot came up on Ozzfest’s second stage, launched Knotfest in 2012, and by 2016 the two were running together as Ozzfest Meets Knotfest in San Bernardino. The bands Ozzfest built now run the festivals competing with it for the same headliners.

Then there’s the money. Sharon has already said that’s what killed Ozzfest the first time: managers and agents kept raising their fees until the numbers stopped working. ‘We made a profit,’ she said. ‘But it was not like, we couldn’t retire on it.’ The last full summer tour ran in 2007. The 2018 Forum show sold 12,465 tickets and grossed $1.2 million, according to Billboard Boxscore, which is a solid night and nowhere near what a festival on this scale costs now.

My take: the headliner should have Ozzy in the blood. Jack says they’re going to ‘stick to our roots,’ and roots means the people who stood next to his dad. Anyone who played Villa Park last July has a better claim than a band booked because the fee fit. If you want to know why that matters, put on the Sabbath records and the solo catalogue and count how many of today’s big bands learned their trade from them.

    What We Still Don’t Know

    • The US city. Sharon asked fans where it should go. No answer yet.
    • The US date. Nothing announced for either country.
    • Whether the US show is one day. Jack’s one-day comment was about Villa Park. Nobody has said how long the American edition runs.
    • The headliner. Promised in August, still missing.
    • Tickets. No on-sale date or prices.

Live Nation is involved, and Sharon has said she wants to ‘mix up the genres.’ Beyond that, the American Ozzfest is a promise with two flags on it.

    TL;DR

    • Ozzfest 2027 will play the UK and the US, the festival confirmed on 21 September.
    • The UK edition is at Villa Park in Birmingham, where Ozzy played his final show, and it’s one day only.
    • No US city, date, headliner or ticket details have been announced.
    • Jack Osbourne said in August the headliner would be named within weeks. It hasn’t been.
    • It’s the first American Ozzfest since The Forum in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve 2018, and the first since Ozzy died in July 2025.

  • “They were so experimental and complex, they gave me the confidence to try anything”: He influenced thrash icons Metallica and Megadeth – but first prog heroes Gentle Giant influenced him

Diamond Head leader and Saxon guitarist Brian Tatler has been cited as an influence by many of the world’s heaviest bands, including Metallica and Megadeth. So it might be surprising to learn that the NWOBHM king’s own main influence were prog icons Gentle Giant – who formed in Portsmouth in 1970, six years before his own band got together 150 miles away in Stourbridge. were one of his own main influences. In 2012 Tatler told Prog about his passion for the experimental genre, also naming two more of his favourite proponents.

“There’s not another band in the history of music that sounded Gentle Giant. In those days a record company would let a band develop and not drop them if they didn’t have a hit.

The first album of theirs I bought was Octopus, but my favourite was always In A Glass House – there’s something about songs like The Runaway and Experience.

The fact they were so experimental and complex gave me the confidence to try anything in Diamond Head, and not be afraid to step outside of the rigid verse/bridge/chorus framework of rock and heavy metal.

The first time I saw It Bites was at a tiny gig in Wolverhampton in ’88 at a social club. They sounded incredible, the tightest band I’d ever seen, and I always liked the drummer, Bob Dalton.

He played simple, powerful drums behind the complex guitar and keyboard parts; he stopped it getting too muso. My favourite tune is Kiss Like Judas – that little guitar riff in it is amazing.

Frank Dunnery is ultra- talented – it’s such a shame he left that band. I remember seeing them do The Ice Melts Into Water, and it looked to me as if he’d lost the plot.

He’d sing the line then walk away from the mic ranting throwing his hands in the air. I don’t know if it was part of the show, but he looked a bit crazy.

“Muse are fucking incredible, I think. I’ve seen them twice since they got big, but missed an opportunity in 1999. They were supporting Three Colours Red at the Irish Centre in Digbeth.

I was on the guestlist, and to my shame I didn’t watch them. I kicked myself later when a friend played me Unintended and Falling Down off Showbiz.

I loved Origin Of Symmetry too. New Born is still my favourite Muse track. But Absolution was the perfect Muse album – every single track was awesome. Matt Bellamy’s an incredible musician; it’s unbelievable how he can sing, play guitar and piano and be such a good songwriter.

These bands are all to my taste. Maybe some of what went into Diamond Head went into them too; maybe we think in quite a similar way.”
