Tarja has put out “Tango,” a team-up with fellow Finns Apocalyptica, as the newest single from her album Frisson Noir.

The song starts with a tango groove played on Apocalyptica‘s cellos and keeps tightening until guitars and drums come in behind a big, cinematic chorus. Tarja moves from a restrained delivery to full power as the lyrics tell of a life that slips by almost unseen.

She explained how the collaboration came about, saying, “I wanted this song to be a special one, and as I have always loved the sound of the cello, Apocalyptica was the perfect artist to work with,” Tarja said. “Eicca, Perttu and Paavo made my dream come true.”

Apocalyptica added, “We have known Tarja since the mid-’90s and working with her has always been at the top of our list of featuring artists or collaborators. It was so great to finally find the time and the song to work together. She originally redefined what it means to combine classical singing with metal and we are so happy for this collaboration.”

The video places Tarja alongside all three members of Apocalyptica, Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso and Paavo Lötjönen. It is a dark, cinematic performance clip that suits the song’s drama.

Collectors get a physical option too. “Tango” comes out Nov. 27 as a 10″ vinyl single limited to 500 copies worldwide. Side A carries the album version. Side B holds two previously unreleased recordings, “Tää Tango (Piano Demo)” and “Tää Tango (Band Demo).” Neither demo will be available digitally, and they show how the track developed, starting with the piano sketch that gave “Tango” its name.

Frisson Noir is the heaviest album of Tarja‘s career. It runs 10 tracks and features Dani Filth of Cradle Of Filth, Apocalyptica, former Nightwish bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Grammy-winning producer Neal Avron, known for his work with Linkin Park, Skillet and Disturbed, handled the mix.

Since going solo, Tarja has charted internationally and gathered a loyal following that has stuck with her through each new project. Her catalog spans more than 20 years and has reached the Top 10 on several European album charts. She is also a steady live presence, touring around the world and guesting at major metal festivals, where she connects with crowds in a way that leaves a mark.

Former Deep Purple bassist/vocalist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Hughes is back home and recovering from open-heart surgery. The operation came two months after he announced he was retiring from touring and live performances.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Hughes posted an update on Instagram Stories, writing: “Now home after an eight day stay, and a 10 hour open heart surgery, operation, at UCLA, Ronald Reagan, Medical Center. Gratitude beyond.”

The procedure had been on the horizon since early August, when Hughes said he had “no option” but to go through with it. The surgery involves opening the chest to work on the heart’s muscles, valves or arteries.

Hughes‘s final live appearance came August 1 with Kings Of Chaos at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Richie Sambora, Jack Blades, Kevin Cronin, Matt Sorum, Steve Stevens, Phil X and others joined him onstage.

A native of Cannock, England, Glenn soaked up a wide range of influences growing up, from early British hard rock and The Beatles to, above all, American soul and R&B. Detroit’s polished Motown sound and the rougher Stax/Volt records out of Memphis both left a mark.

Hughes first broke through in the early 1970s with Trapeze, then joined Deep Purple in 1973 during a lineup shake-up that also brought in David Coverdale. Skeptics doubted the new version of the band, but Burn (1974) changed minds and still stands as a classic. In that period, the group headlined California Jam in front of more than 300,000 people and flew the world on a private jet called The Starship. It also cut two more studio albums, Stormbringer and Come Taste The Band, before breaking up in 1976.

His first solo record, Play Me Out, came out in 1977. He later paired up with former Pat Travers guitarist Pat Thrall in Hughes/Thrall, which released a well-regarded self-titled album in 1982. Through the 1980s and ’90s, Hughes popped up on other artists’ records, credited and uncredited, as a singer, bassist or songwriter. The list includes Gary Moore, John Norum, and Black Sabbath‘s Tony Iommi.

Since 1992, he has built a solo career of about a dozen studio albums covering hard rock, funk and more modern sounds. Collaborators have included Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Navarro and John Frusciante. He also helped form or joined California Breed (with Jason Bonham and Andrew Watt), Black Country Communion (with Joe Bonamassa and Bonham) and The Dead Daisies.

More recently, Hughes joined Satchvai, the new project from guitar heavyweights Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, writing and singing on their single “I Wanna Play My Guitar.”
