There is a particular kind of surrender that comes with sundown: the day’s arguments begin to lose their urgency, and even a bad decision can wait until morning. On Western, The Church gives that feeling an easy, unhurried shape. A shuffling drumbeat keeps moving with quiet resolve while gentle guitar chimes suggest the tall shadows cast by the last light spreading across the desert. Beneath them, the bass holds a deep, rounded groove, giving Steve Kilbey room to sing with the calm of someone who has already heard every objection.

Recorded in Austin, Texas, Western offers another look at Lacuna, the Australian band’s 28th album, due October 30, 2026 via Cooking Vinyl. The 17-track record follows their recent singles-celebrating world tour, with this latest release picking up after Sacred Echoes Part II.

Kilbey’s matter-of-fact resignation gives the song its peculiar comfort. You could picture him singing from the corner of a dim saloon, keeping company with patrons whose sorrows have outlasted their money. His voice suggests a certain familiarity with disappointment, delivered with enough warmth to make the admission companionable. Around him, the guitars leave space for the rhythm to breathe, their delicate post-punk melody carrying a dusky bittersweetness that seems perfectly at ease with itself.

That balance between forward motion and quiet retreat is central to the song’s appeal. The drums keep their appointment with whatever comes next; the melody allows itself another look behind. Across three minutes, Western catches the small relief of calling a truce with the day, with the possibility of starting again left somewhere beyond the horizon.

“Well, we were in Texas, weren’t we?” laughs Kilbey. “As a kid, all there was on TV were Westerns, so I let it all soak in and this is what came out. Some nice six-string bass counter riffs going, and the song is basically a shaggy dog story that just jumps all over the place… breezy and uncomplicated.”

Formed in 1980, The Church have spent 46 years exploring the meeting points of post-punk, psychedelia, and dream pop, with songs including The Unguarded Moment, Almost With You, Under the Milky Way, and Reptile marking different stages of that history. Their current six-piece lineup brings Kilbey together with longtime drummer and producer Tim Powles, guitarists Ian Haug and Ashley Naylor, multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Cain, and newest member, drummer Nicholas Meredith.

The sexual assault court case against Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will have to be rescheduled, as the judge due to preside over the legal proceedings has unexpectedly stepped down.

Judge Patricia A. Young was due to hear the opening arguments in Los Angeles on September 28.

Plaintiff Julia Misley – formerly Julia Holcomb – is accusing Tyler sexually abusing her from 1973 to 1976, starting when she was 16-years-old, and he was 25. She allege that Tyler coerced and persuaded her into believing that their three-year relationship, which began in 1973, was a ‘romantic love affair”. Her legal team filed the lawsuit in December 2022 under California’s Child Victims Act, suing Tyler for sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress

At the time the lawsuit was filed, Misley’s attorney, Jeff Anderson, said that the music industry has “permitted, protected, and profited from severe violence for decades”, adding “It’s time to face the music. It’s time for reckoning.”

Tyler denies the claims and is seeking to have the case dismissed, arguing that the pair primarily lived together in Boston, where the age of consent was 16.

In May, Judge Young dismissed the majority of the lawsuit under statutes of limitations – meaning too much time had passed since the alleged crimes were committed.

Now Young has recused herself from the case, without specifying the exact conflict of interest which forced her withdrawal.

“As a result of the parties not waiving, I will officially disqualify,” Judge Young said. “Once I discovered the basis for my disqualification, I did not take any further action, so anything that was an open question as of last Friday … I have not ruled on those, and I will not rule on those.”

It is not yet clear when the next stage of the trial will begin.
