  • HOT MULLIGAN Are Back For Seconds And Australia’s Clearly Still Hungry

Interview by Ali Williams Hot Mulligan’s latest chat with HEAVY finds the band exactly where good bands tend to be after years of grinding away: confident, funny, slightly unhinged in the best way, and still refreshingly free of self-important rubbish. Speaking with Ali Williams ahead of their April return to Australia, the group as a […]

Album Review: The Melvins with Napalm Death – Savage Imperial Death March

    Reviewed by Dan Barnes

On the surface of it, stoner trio (the) Melvins and Godfathers of Grind Napalm Death should be worlds apart; but scratch a little beneath the surface and you’ll see a synchronicity between the bands, beyond their rabid fanbases and Dorian Grey-like longevity. The above are admittedly lazy labels that barely begin to define either band’s musical journeys, both of which started in the Eighties, and both of which are going strong to this day.

Named after two co-headlining tours, one in 2016 and again in 2025, Savage Imperial Death March is a true collaboration, the result of a coming together of alternative, experimental musicians, for whom boundaries are mere inconveniences and limits are meant to be broken.

Available previously only on the 2025 tour and in an abbreviated form, Savage Imperial… has now been expanded by twenty-five percent and made more readily available on digital, CD and four limited edition, variously coloured vinyl editions.

Of the previously available tracks, they exist closer to Melvin’s sensibilities rather than Napalm’s. Some Kind of Antichrist is the record’s longest tune, at almost ten-minutes, and starts with an upbeat sludge progression. Barney can be heard providing backing vocals, his growls a sharp contrast to Buzz’s clean delivery. A big low-end keeps everything anchored, but spiralling, screeching guitars allows the mid-section to take flight. At the halfway point, following a robotic, electronic section from Napalm’s vocalist, Some Kind… takes a very unexpected turn and heads off in an ethereal, almost Hawkwind cosmic jam, full of unnerving beeps, unsettling intersections and ghostly voices.

Closing track, Death Hour, follows the same path, though in a more succinct package, layering frenzied guitars atop a driving low end, giving way to ghoulish sounds and an overall jazzy, jamming vibe. As the record draws to its conclusion, we’re presented with a host of whispering voices, unintelligible, but certainly saying something that may be recognisable. Oh, and it ends with a few bars of Van Halen’s Jump played on a keyboard, before fading out.

Album Review: The Melvins with Napalm Death - Savage Imperial Death March

Savage Imperial Death March begins with the only Napalm Death-sounding tune, reminiscent of the Brummie grinders’ more experimental ventures, such as Dear Slum Landlord or Inside the Torn Apart’s title tune, but with a more Melvins musicality. Tossing Coins into the Fountain of Fuck again incorporates a loose and sludgy riff over which Barney can bark.

As this is a true collaboration, there are points where the creativity of all artists concerned comes together. Rip the God crawls as guitars scream in tortured agony, never increasing its tempo, but ramping up the intensity with every repeat of the riff; Nine Days of Rain and Stealing Horses come with dual vocals courtesy of Buzz and Barney, Nine Days… offers a more straightforward, almost progressive approach, with infectious drums, while Stealing…, also employing a groove-laden rhythm, opts for a more upbeat sound.

The two additional tracks for this reissue are more Noise-oriented, with Awful Handwriting clocking in at just a couple of minutes, filled with beeps and grunts and growls; Comparison is the Thief of Joy takes its time and is a very capable piece of gothic-tinged electronic instrumentalism.

Savage Imperial Death March should appeal to those more open-minded music fans who have an interest in what a couple of inventive bands can do when they have like-minded musicians to bounce ideas off. It’s not perfect, there are times that the momentum drops, but they’re few a far between; the rest of the time, this collaboration is a breath of fresh air and could prove to be one of the most important records of the year.

  • MORK Returns With New Album Monolitt Out June 19

Norwegian titan, Mork, was created by Thomas Eriksen in 2004, with the debut album ‘Isebakke’ eventually surfacing in 2013. Since then, Mork has been ceaselessly rising through the echelons of Black Metal, and on the heels of 2024’s intense and groundbreaking ‘Syv’ opus – which has resulted in the band branching out with tours in the Far East & Australia – Eriksen continues on this evolutionary path with the new album, and what is undoubtedly set to be a new benchmark, MONOLITT, set for release on Peaceville on 19 June.

Mork has now shared the first single from the album, titled “ØDELAGT”.

    STREAM/DOWNLOAD THE NEW SINGLE ‘ØDELAGT’

Dark, droning and suffocatingly heavy, “ØDELAGT” moves like a slow collapse. Built upon stern riffs, oppressive atmosphere and a relentless sense of weight, the track channels a bleak introspection where defeat, disillusionment and self-destruction take centre stage. The music carries a brutal gravity, cold, punishing and hypnotic, while still maintaining the unmistakable spirit of Norwegian black metal.

Lyrically, “ØDELAGT” explores the downfall of the self. It tells of a hollow existence built upon illusion; a throne constructed from falsehood and self-deception. As the echoes of nothingness ring out, the mask finally falls, revealing a life consumed by its own emptiness. What once appeared as purpose dissolves into resignation, where the final truth becomes unavoidable: everything was in vain.

With its unrelenting intensity and crushing weight, “ØDELAGT” stands as a stark and uncompromising introduction to the world of MONOLITT.

“A stark monument to the unrelenting brutality of reality, the monolith looms above us, immovable, indifferent, eternal. Its crushing presence bears down on the spirit, suffocating hope and testing the limits of endurance. It is an experience carved in stone, unyielding”. – Thomas Eriksen

‘Monolitt’ was recorded and performed primarily by Thomas Eriksen, with Asgeir Mickelson supplying drums, plus additional vocals coming from fellow Mork member Øyvind Kaslegard. The album was mixed at Toproom Studio by Børge Finstad (Mayhem), before being mastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door (Darkthrone), and at Appelbaum Mastering by Maor Appelbaum (Sepultura). The bold and striking cover image was created by Norwegian artist Kjell Åge Melland.

Mork will be embarking on an extensive touring schedule in support of ‘Monolitt’

  • OUR LAST ENEMY Drop Surprise Cover Track COMA AMERICA

Australian metal outfit Our Last Enemy have surprise dropped a studio cover of Coma America, originally by punk-metal agitators AMEN

    Listen here!
    https://li.sten.to/olecoma

The recording carries deep significance for the band, who acquired both the electric guitar and bass guitar once owned by AMEN frontman Casey Chaos following his passing in 2024.

Those instruments were used on the recording, which was tracked DIY in the band’s home studio, deliberately paying homage to AMEN’s fiercely independent punk roots.

Having already road-tested the song on their recent national tour supporting Combichrist to an overwhelming crowd response, Our Last Enemy decided to capture that energy and release a studio

version in the lead-up to their headline appearance at the Wacken Open Air 35 Year Anniversary Show in Sydney, Australia on the 18th April 2026.

The result is a visceral, heartfelt salute that adds the band’s signature industrial edge to an already blistering track, with lyrical themes that are once again uncomfortably current in today’s world.

Sydney will host one of only a handful of events in the southern hemisphere, bringing a piece of the Wacken experience to local soil while connecting with a truly international metal community.

Taking place at Sydney’s Crowbar, the night will be co-headlined by Our Last Enemy and Witchgrinder and rounded out by KüntsquädShatterface and Age of Emergence.

  • “We’ll Escape This World” — Los Angeles Trio Obskuros Unveil Video for Romantic Post-Punk Track “Tu Tiempo”

    Solo quiero gastar

    mi tiempo contigo

    Regálame tu tiempo

    escaparemos de este mundo

Obskuros, a post-punk trio from Northeast Los Angeles, makes music that seems to arrive like a half-remembered dream, as though it had been playing somewhere behind a wall long before you stepped into the room bathed in wistful romance. What began as Erick Lobo’s solo project has, with the addition of Yanely Milanes and Chris Lemus, become something fuller and more finely balanced: a band with a gift for turning inward feeling into shared atmosphere.

Their song Tu Tiempo moves with that particular grace, finding a point where dreampop drift, darkwave romance, and post-punk tension can coexist without jostling one another for prominence. The group’s Spanish-language delivery softens and blurs at the edges, threading themselves through the haze of synth and guitar in a way that deepens the song’s sense of suspended emotion. Restraint can be more persuasive than display, so rather than pushing toward catharsis, Tu Tiempo lingers in a state of longing, allowing its feeling to gather slowly until the whole track seems lit from within.

The arrangement is rich without becoming cluttered. Saturated guitars glow at the periphery, atmospheric synths hover like weather, and the rhythm section keeps the song moving with a patient, nocturnal pulse. Above it all, the harmonies are especially lovely: close, intimate, and slightly blurred, as if sung from two sides of the same dream. The mood is closer to wistfulness touched by wonder, a recognition that desire can be both ache and shelter at once.

Tu Tiempo is built around a simple but resonant impulse: the wish to spend one’s time entirely in the company of another person, and in doing so to escape the blunt weight of the ordinary world. Time, in the song, is not merely a measure but an offering, something that can be given, shared, and transformed. That idea gives the track its emotional core. The yearning is unmistakable, yet so is the hope.

The video extends the song’s atmosphere with a quietly uncanny charm. Obskuros performs in the subway as if busking in another dimension, suspended between the familiar grit of public transit and something more spectral, more private. It is a striking image for a band whose music occupies a similar threshold: grounded in the physical textures of post-punk, but always reaching toward somewhere more elusive. On Tu Tiempo, Obskuros makes longing feel almost luminous.

    Watch Tu Tiempo below:

Obskuros’ new album, La Puerta, is out now, arriving like a starlit confession pressed into song and opening onto a place where the band’s wistful longing and dreamy ache can fully bloom.

Across 13 tracks, the trio refines its momentum, emotional pull, and Spanish-language yearning into something focused and cohesive, with Yanely Milanes and Erick H. Miranda sharing vocal duties to deepen the record’s emotional range. On tracks like the opener “Paralysis,” Erick’s vocals arrive in a dreampop-caliber deluge of reverb, giving the song a submerged, yearning pull carried forward by swift post-punk bass and chiming guitar. Elsewhere, songs like “Beso Fatal,” with Yanely on vocals, drift in with a spellbound, otherworldly grace, gliding over angular guitar bounce and synth churn, while English-language tracks such as “Drive,” once again featuring Erick on vocals, bring those same textures into closer conversation while still retaining the timbre of Spanish romance. For all its shifts in voice and language, La Puerta remains remarkably unified, holding fast to its ache, atmosphere, and sense of escape with quiet assurance.

Listen below and order the album here.

Obskuros will also be promoting La Puerta live this spring and summer, with live dates scheduled at Sangriento in Mexico City on April 11th, Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre on May 15th, and Soda Bar in San Diego on June 14th.
