Connecticut emo crew Anxious released the very good album Bambi last year. Last month, just ahead of their tour with Citizen and Hotline TNT, they dropped the one-off single “Don’t Move.” That tour is happening right now, and Anxious just shared another new song called “Secret Weapon.” This one is a spirited melodic churn that reminds me of grungely ’90s punk bands like Wool and Seaweed. Technical death metal architects REVOCATION are pleased to present their video for “Data Corpse.” The track comes off the band’s acclaimed New Gods, New Masters full-length, released last year via Metal Blade Records.
Comments vocalist/guitarist Dave Davidson, “‘Data Corpse’ is about social media companies constantly scouring our personal lives for profit. We unwittingly give up more and more of ourselves every year just to be sold a shinier pair of shoes, all until what’s left of our private lives is picked to the bone. For the video, we once again worked with the incredible team at MyGoodEye. My transformation into a mutant cyborg was influenced by a lot of the imagery that originated in classic cyberpunk films like Tetsuo and Akira. Enjoy the dystopian grotesqueries.”

The Spirit of Gravity is not exactly an easy listen. Conceptually and compositionally, the album can seem intimidatingly dense at first blush, and the promotional blurbs that name-check obscure Polish sci-fi and highlight the use of handmade 22-TET guitars certainly lean into this mystique. However, while Tyler Henthorn’s second album as Agonanist is certainly challenging at times, there are also moments of remarkable beauty that make The Spirit of Gravity a must-listen for anyone who likes their black metal even slightly left-of-center.

In No Clean Singing’s excellent interview with the man behind Agonanist, Henthorn shared that the inspiration for much of the album’s lyrics was drawn from his time living in Ho Chi Minh City and his own covert investigations into the underground Vietnamese cat meat industry. The precise nature of that connection is not overtly stated on the album, but when one hears the buzzing, power-drill tremolo riffs that nearly drown out Andrew Lee’s roars on “Cry of Cages,” it’s hard to feel anything other than primal, animalistic panic. This fight-or-flight response is further accentuated by percussion extraordinaire Kévin Paradis, who blasts, rattles, and snare-rolls his way through the labyrinthine arrangements. “Cry of Cages” is by far the most aggressive and contrapuntal track on the entire album, exemplifying the gnarled dissonance that one would expect from extreme “microtonal” music.
But like other artists who have approached black metal from this angle—Blut Aus Nord, Jute Gyte, Scarcity, and Kostnatění spring to mind—perhaps Agonanist’s greatest success with The Spirit of Gravity is breaking free of the baggage associated with genre or temperament. After all, what is a “microtonal” tuning if not another means of dividing the same whole, with the notes now even closer, the palette even richer?
Thus, The Spirit of Gravity never devolves into a rote exercise in exotic-sounding intervals. In fact, its most delicate and textured moments are among the most impactful on the entire album. Colin Marston, who handled mixing and mastering duties, also contributes keyboards throughout, and while it’s tough to determine which parts are his and which are Henthorn’s, the interplay between the two creates a persistent ghostly ambience. Exhibit A is instrumental “For Mia”, a poignant tribute to the cat that started Henthorn’s investigative journey. Despite its dense rhythmic foundation, the track is built around a standard verse/chorus structure that deliberately reinforces each fraying chordal lamentation. Lead single “The Gateway” is another deceptively conventional track lush with shimmering guitar arpeggios and astral synths adrift between spacious, measured beats. But when a crackling, distorted haze slowly descends upon the track, these familiar elements become hopelessly distorted, bending and buckling as if viewed in a carnival mirror.
The Spirit of Gravity’s stunning conclusion pushes all of the aforementioned themes and motifs to their breaking points. “Disruption and Decay” serves as a grim continuation of “For Mia,” adapting the main chord progression into waves of acrid, claustrophobic gloom. Even when its middle third descends into momentary calm, it yawns open to reveal a realm that is more subdued than what preceded it but no less haunting. What follows is the nearly 12-minute closer “Collapse,” which contains some of Henthorn’s most expansive and experimental work yet. It initially follows a structure similar to “Disruption and Decay”—a plunge into abject darkness followed by a sudden, almost explosive decompression—but its cacophonous denouement is breathtaking in an entirely different sense. After a moment of meditative stillness, bitcrushed drums and clattering sheet metal reverberate through darkened alleyways. Swelling synth chords are drowned out by bitter, howling winds. The silence that ends the album is chilling, profound, and, like the rest of The Spirit of Gravity, paradoxically beautiful in its own way.

Over a very short stretch of time, Boston’s Haywire have vaulted to the absolute top of the hardcore heap, playing crazy shows on an absurd schedule and becoming viral stars without compromising their presentation. They’ve done all this without having all that much music out on the market. With one album and a few splits, Haywire’s entire recorded output is what, 40 minutes? Maybe 50? That’s about to change.
