After recent signing with Distortion Music Group (powered by Reigning Phoenix Music), Missouri-based black metal band Stormruler now disclose details of their third long player dubbed Morning Nautical Twilight. Due out on December 4th 2026, it was engineered, mixed and mastered by Gabe Usery at Encapsulated Records.

Live Review: Nails – Rebellion, Manchester

It’s three shades of musical extremity at the Rebellion Bar tonight, with black metal, grind and power violence all on offer for our consideration. 

Getting the ball rolling this evening is Invunche who most recent record, Atavismo, makes up the bulk of the set; taking punked-up black metal and adding a whole-load of psychedelics, main man, El Invunche, leads his charges through a dark journey of Burzum-esque riffs and raw vocals. Album opener, Antü sets the tone for the set, La Luna feels more spacey and ethereal, especially in the initial sections, the quickening pace of the track adding urgency as Dimmu/ Cradle style swirling keys are brought in. Últimos Días takes us back to the hey-day of the genre with its icy feel, QhapaqHucha rampages and the vast epic that is Elal takes us into the II album’s Ciudad closer. An odd choice of opener, if the truth be told, but one that tickles the fancy of those with a taste for the darker arts.

If I’m being upfront about this, it is Finland’s grind-masters, Rotten Sound who were highest on my own radar tonight. Having been plying their trade for more than thirty-years, the band have such an extensive discography that they may well have a new record out by the time I fin(n)ish this sentence. The punky newbie Brave New World gets things going, the infectious riff giving way to a barrage of musical extremity; Apocalypse’s Suburban Bliss takes no prisoners, with crowd activity ramping up to maximum in the sold-out venue. Vocalist Keijo Niinimaa feels like he might be doing himself a mischief during Sharing and I imagine he’s glad of the mid-song breakdown. Relative oldies Power, Self and Choose are sub-two-minute blasts from the Cursed record, with the latter being having a doomy progression without sacrificing the intensity. The band delve deeper into their past with a suite from 2002’s Murderworks album: Targets, Void, Insects, the eleven-second Suffer and the by-comparison epic Obey are still packed with youthful exuberance. The Exit album from 2005 finds its title track full of early atmospherics yet heavily cosmically influenced, Burden is an utter barrage of percussion, courtesy of Sami Latva, Slay is atmospheric and refined, while Western Cancer and Sell Your Soul are anything but. Closer, Decay, from the Consume to Contaminate EP, hits hard in both its heavy, doomy opening and its blitzkrieg second half.

It’s a swift and promised return to town for Californian power violence trio, Nails, following their awesome opening stint on the Kreator tour in the spring. The last few times I’ve seen the band have been on larger stages: the Apollo in March and at the Bowler’s on the main stage at Damnation 2024. Yet I think Nails and the like work best in a smaller environment, with the walls crushing in and the crowd packed like sardines, moving almost as one.

There’s barely an hour of stage time tonight, but the raw, visceral energy silling from the PA is the equivalent of many bands two-hour performance. God’s Cold Hands and You Will Never Be One of Us’ Savage Intolerance slice with the most precise cutting edge, the latter’s vocals hushed, with the breakdown and guitar runs not too far removed from Dying Fetus. A frenzied Tyrant is the second and last visit to Abandon All Life; chants of “Violence” introduce the never-subtle Violence is Forever’s killer, addictive stomp, and Wide Open Wound feels like the final calls of a dying creature. 

Lacking the Ability to Process Empathy isn’t just one of the greatest song titles ever, it’s also a two-minute hate-stomp of raw, unbridled raging. Life Is a Death Sentence and You Will Never Be One of Us’ title track rampage into the finale of Suffering Soul’s danceable rhythms and Unsilent Death’s hardcore vibes.

Todd promised in March that Nails would be back in town before the end of the year and he made good on his word with a performance of brutal intensity that was sure to slake the thirst no matter which particular form of extremity you favour.
