Snooper have been making big moves. In April, vocalist Blair Tramel joined Hayley Williams onstage for a song. A couple weeks ago, the band was announced as openers for Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday’s Bitch Cabal Tour, which rudely is not coming to New York. Now, they’re back “Recess,” their first new track since last year’s Worldwide (aside from some demos and live recordings they’ve shared). “Recess” has Snooper trading their punk chaos for electronic rambunctiousness, and that’s because it’s directly inspired by “Lip Gloss” by Lil Mama, one of Tramel’s favorite songs. It comes with a music video in an abandoned high school during the demolition process. Watch below.

The song begins with an industrial noise, a machine that never stops. Then, distorted and intense guitars enter like elephants marching toward you. Then the female singer emerges, delivering her lyrics with an epic tone. Her high and confident pitch creates a melody that is dynamic yet firmly lodged in your mind. The composition shows careful attention to the right build-up to the chorus and the correct energy.

This song encapsulates the struggle of being trapped in our own minds, like the relentless movement of that machine. It prompts listeners to ponder where their thoughts come from and how they can break free to be their true selves. This question feels ancient and profound, stirring a sense of unease similar to the music itself. Yet, it invites reflection, suggesting that the genuine discovery of ourselves may be a vital purpose for existence.
The strong influences of 80s hard rock resonate throughout the track. However, this band transcends simple genre boundaries, consistently crafting dystopian and intense atmospheres that leave listeners breathless. The blend of fierce instrumentation and thought-provoking lyrics makes for a compelling paradox: a thrilling ride coupled with introspective challenges.
The introductory industrial noise creates a stark atmosphere. It establishes a sense of urgency, almost as if the machine represents society’s relentless pace and noise. The entry of guitars brings an immediate intensity, marking the music’s shift from mechanical to organic.
There is a remarkable contrast between the heaviness of the instrumentation and the soaring quality of her vocals. This duality enhances the track’s feeling of conflict, drawing listeners deeper into the experience.
The decision to repeat the same phrase in the chorus serves as a rallying cry, encouraging audience participation. The dynamic energy propels the song forward, eliciting an autumnal catharsis—a cathartic release, as if urging everyone to scream along.
The composition showcases a well-structured build-up, effectively utilizing the contrast between verses and the chorus. Each transition creates a compelling momentum that leads to a satisfying climax. Moments of pause and release keep listeners engaged, enhancing the overall sonic experience.
While the song draws from the hard rock of the past, it does not rest solely on nostalgia. Sweet Mess pushes the boundaries by incorporating modern elements that make their music relevant today. They succeed in creating an atmosphere that resonates with contemporary audiences while nodding to rock’s rich history.
“My Machine” serves as a reminder of the complexities we navigate within ourselves. It offers no simple answers but instead encourages an introspective journey. The song may leave listeners feeling heavy yet invigorated. The exploration of identity and authenticity manifests through the sound and message, making it a standout single.

The song opens with a driving rhythm, featuring a futuristic sound that also evokes elements of 80s hard rock. This intriguing blend creates a nostalgic yet dystopian feeling, which makes the track particularly engaging. It captures the essence of resilience and encourages listeners to never give up. The theme revolves around outplaying the game, overcoming challenges, and being one’s most resilient self during the pursuit of personal goals.

Energy surges through the rhythm like a bullet train, charging the listener with an intense drive. The guitar solo at 1:50 showcases excellent technique, providing a rock-infused moment that greatly enhances the song. This brief departure into a more alternative sound adds depth and texture to the overall composition.
As the song progresses towards its conclusion, a noticeable shift occurs. The tempo is halved, with the drumming becoming more urgent. This change amplifies the anticipation, ultimately leading into the final fade-out. Such a transition reflects both creativity and skill in composition, showcasing the artist’s ability to build tension effectively.
The sonic elements in “Dice Are Rolling…” serve to reinforce its central message. The layering of instruments enhances the listener’s experience, making it hard to ignore the underlying theme of perseverance. Throughout the track, the energizing rhythm and powerful guitar play create a sense of momentum, demonstrating how music can be both exhilarating and motivational. The urgency in the ending serves as a reminder of the importance of staying focused on one’s objectives, even in the face of adversity.
This single is a robust contribution to modern rock while paying homage to its influential roots. The blend of futuristic sounds with a nostalgic rock vibe ensures that it appeals to a diverse audience.
Israell’s ability to merge these elements is commendable, as it highlights his artistic range and depth. With varying dynamics and a strong message, “Dice Are Rolling…” is a thrilling listening experience and a powerful motivator.
