Live Review: Kill-Town Death Fest – Friday

My first band of the day were one of my most anticipated of the undercard with Seraphic Entombment, all the way from Alabama, United States. Having released Sickness Particles Gleam a few years ago they shot to the zenith of my favourite upcoming acts and as we gathered ready for them I wasn’t the only one thinking the same thing. They came onto that stage with power and energy and enough time to level the building; it’s hardly into the late afternoon and yet the black stage is positively teeming with bodies. There isn’t much interaction given their death/doom sound is best when immersion is fully released though they take their time to introduce themselves and thank the audience for coming to see them early in the day’s running. They were fantastic and are amongst my highlights for this year’s festival.

Talk about making an entrance. Disembodiment take to the Black Stage with vitriol and passion in droves given this is their first show in Europe. With seething riffs and a vocal performance they hardly stood still, Disembodiment truly live up to their namesake, hearkening mutilation and all things nefarious and viscous. You can tell just by watching them they’re ecstatic to be here, their frontman is insane, interacting with the crowd at the very front with joy in his boisterous vocals. It’s curious, Disembodiment are death metal through and through yet through their frontman’s energy and physical actions on stage they possess something akin to a Hardcore presence which is unique amongst Kill Town’s roster this weekend.

Due to logistical issues, Rottrevore and Degraved’s slots had to be switched; now while this wasn’t ideal for the former, it was wonderful for those looking to see the latter. With Disembodiment playing a short set it gave everyone a chance to eat, catch some breath and prepare for Degraved’s debut European performance, one that burst unto the Danish capital with fire and brimstone and slaughter. When one thinks of that precious old school death metal sound, Degraved are living avatars, sporting seething guitar work with drums cease fully pummelling our psyches away. The main stage sees people packed like sardines, looking to catch even a glimpse of Degraved’s set and the noxious atmosphere their sound propagates. They’re only a young band but you can tell they’re destined for big things given how tightly they play together, and how effortless the crushing and harrowing sound they champion is conveyed.

Ectovoid take to the Black Stage and amass a downright enormous crowd; truth be told every band here could have played the main stage if the crowds are anything to by; people sit along the stairs, they throng the bar, every side seat, only a slither of room to manoeuvre through the people. The band here bring drums and bass in spades with vocals agitating the air with volatile intonations.

Abhorrence are legendary amongst Finnish death metal circles and this evening marks a rare performance here at Kill Town. This was not a performance to miss, especially as we had Morbific frontman Jusa Janhonen hanging out with us, taking in the show. It’s that sense of shared community in the name of extreme metal that makes Kill Town the incredible hub it is. In addition, David Ingram and his wife were milling around, talking with people, exchanging great vibes. You could enter the Abhorrence show not knowing a single track and come away feeling like you got to truly know them as a band, what their aesthetic is, their stance on death metal. It doesn’t require great working out, only a love for devastation and adoration for everything macabre and rotting. Considering the age they are they’re remarkably tight, proving to the new guard there’s always something to learn. Everything about their performance feels right, that riff comes in at the right time, that scream is pitch perfect, those drums are the taut force they need to be etc.

Saosin have shared their second track of 2026 in the form of ‘Just Be Honest’, and continued to deal out the heat in a stellar manner.

Sitting on the more caustic side of the band’s sound and dealing with liars and deceivers, it is a hard-hitting and hedonistic piece of post-hardcore. A further bridge between the band of 20 years ago and the people they are today, with plenty of rough and smooth vocal refrains and classic emo pulses, it’s just another absolute banger.

Guitarist Beau Burchell had this to say about the track:

“We knew there was something special about ‘Just Be Honest’ from the moment of its inception. It had that rare feeling early on where you just know a song is going to matter on an album.

“Hearing Cove’s vocals on it for the first time confirmed it, and then Phil [Sgrosso]’s leads gave it that extra push. The whole thing blossomed into something bigger than we imagined.

“This is really just the beginning of a much bigger body of work for us, a whole new era. We weren’t planning to share anything this soon, but we got so excited about where the music was heading that we couldn’t sit on it any longer.”

It follows on from ‘Starting Over Again’, which sounds a lot like this:

Jack Latham, the UK producer known as Jam City, recently assisted on Logic1000’s single “Jersey,” and he’ll release his own new album My World later this month. We’ve already posted the title track, which featurees Aidan, Bawo and Ox Eye. Yesterday, Jam City followed that track with “2am,” a new collaboration with the London singer-songwriter Gianna.

Helsinki, Finland-based metal group Beast in Black — led by former Battle Beast guitarist Anton Kabanen — has announced a new album, Fear The Beast, and shared the music video for the title track, which serves as the band’s new single. The song was written and produced by Kabanen, with artwork by Roman Ismailov and the video directed by award-winning director Katri Ilona Koppanen.

Kabanen explains the inspiration behind the track: “The song is about Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. But the main reason to write about it was my fascination with the biomechanical nightmare art of Hans Ruedi Giger.

“Ever since I was a teenager I’ve seen recurring nightmares about a xenomorph hunting me in dystopian themed environments, yet never quite catching me (thank goodness!). Beside the creature’s downright perverted and extreme appearance I find it sensual, elegant, intense, fierce, horrifying, exotic and mysterious — almost as if it’s a beauty and a beast merged into one. And in a funny way it turned out that it’s I who captured my assailant, the xenomorph, inside a song after all these years!

“Though the song is solely based on the first film, James Cameron’s sequel Aliens is equally important to me in terms of an emotional impact. We tried to blend some of the feel from both films into our music video, with Cameron’s influence weighing more on the visual side of industrial elements.

“We’re absolutely thrilled about this beautiful cinematic video which wouldn’t have been possible without Katri Ilona Koppanen and Emil Pohjalainen of Nestruction Studios, who pushed their abilities to the extreme and beyond. We, the band, salute you!”

Fear The Beast is the band’s long-awaited fourth studio album, following 2021’s Dark Connection. Kabanen sat out Beast in Black’s recent North American tour as support for Helloween in order to focus on completing work on the record. With new lead guitarist Markus Venehsalo recently joining the band, “Fear The Beast” showcases Beast in Black’s trademark dance beat-driven heavy metal — instantly memorable riffs and melodies, raw vocal power and fiery solos.

Beast in Black is known for its dynamic blend of power metal, 1980s pop and electronic music. Its critically acclaimed albums Berserker (2017), From Hell With Love (2019) and Dark Connection (2021) have solidified the band’s global presence through notable tours and festival appearances. Beast in Black is: Yannis Papadopoulos (lead vocals), Mate Molnar (bass), Atte Palokangas (drums), Markus Venehsalo (guitars) and Anton Kabanen (guitars, vocals, virtual instruments programming).

Ahead of Louder Than Life kicking off next week, the festival have revealed that they have joined forces with Spotify for some special collaborative treats.

The pair have created some ways for you to get ready for the big four-day bonanza before you even step on site, with a curated playlist you can check out here. There is also a Louder Than Life experience that takes place with the Spotify app and can be accessed right here, where performance footage will be shared, allowing you to enjoy the festival vibes whenever you want.

Additionally, there will also be a dedicated Louder Than Life x Spotify merch tent on site throughout the weekend, where exclusive merch will be on sale.

Chamie McCurry, Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager of Danny Wimmer Presents, had this to say about the collaboration:

Back in 2016, Jenny Lewis formed the indie supergroup Nice As Fuck with Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster and the Like’s Tennessee Thomas, and they played their first show at a Bernie Sanders benefit. The surprise-released their self-titled debut a few months later. They toured. They played Colbert. And then they were gone. Now, they’re back.
