It was a headline I know I didn’t expect after covering the apparent reunion of Twisted Sister: Dee Snider was stepping down from touring with the band because of ongoing health concerns. Though that initially set the band’s future plans into jeopardy, remaining original members Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda decided that they should still do something to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary.
Flash forward to last week and not only is the band going to play some shows, but they’ve recruited ex-Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach to fill in for Snider. Now, with that major change in place, Snider’s out here singing Bach’s praises, letting every media outlet know that he’s in favor of the move and really wants to support what the band’s doing without him.
“I totally approve of Sebastian Bach stepping in for me. He’s a true fan & will honor what I did with every show! My son Jesse and Bas are the only people I believe can deliver. Bas got the call.”
With the lineup for Twisted Sister now set as Bach, French, Ojeda, bassist Russell Pzütto, and drummer Joey Cassata, the reunion shows are once again on, though just one date is set: the Alaska State Fair on September 4.
While speaking with fans on Twitter, Snider said his decision to step down came at the right time, as he wanted to make sure fans get the best performance they should get.
“For a retired 71 yr old I’m great. But I’ve only got so much tread left on these tires. I decided to use it for the rest of my journey…and not burn them up on stage trying to prove I’m as good as I ever was. I can live with that choice. I would’ve been a shadow of my former self out there anyway.”
When it comes to Bach taking over, Snider said he was extremely supportive of the move.
“I love Sebastian Bach! During the darkest period of my career, he stood tall as a Dee Snider fan when few would. I will always be grateful to him for not caring what was ‘cool’ at the moment and speaking proudly for the things he loved.”
As for Bach, the chance to front Twisted Sister is a pretty exciting opportunity, especially since he’s been a fan of the band for decades.
“I love Dee Snider. I will always love the music he has made. No matter how much Dee sees himself as ‘hair metal,’ I will always see him on a much higher level than that implies. He is one of the greatest frontmen and vocalists of all time. Any corny label less than that is an insult.”
