After more than fifteen years of celebrating Japanese music in the United Kingdom, the London based live event Japan Underground is officially heading to Tokyo for its debut in the country. The two day music showcase is scheduled to take place during the first weekend of August at the GRIT venue in Shibuya.

The weekend features a diverse lineup of emerging and established rock acts spanning the Japanese underground scene. Saturday will focus on heavy rock and metalcore, featuring performances from Fathomless Skywalker, Bone Dawn, Bered, and headlining all female metal act Bridear. The Sunday schedule will shift toward a wider alternative scope, showcasing performances by Mellows, Wendy, singer and actress Ena Fujita, and the theatrical rock group Kinoco Hotel.

Japan Underground was originally established in 2010 by Tom Smith, who later founded JPU Records to help introduce international audiences to prominent rock acts. The event series built its reputation by bringing future stars such as Fact and Otoboke Beaver to overseas audiences before they achieved widespread international recognition. With this upcoming Tokyo debut, the organizers aim to capture the raw energy of the Shibuya scene and continue showcasing the next generation of Japanese musical talent.

Detroit rock quintet Eva Under Fire released their highly anticipated sophomore album, VILLAINOUS, via Better Noise Music on July 10. Oklahoma-based alternative metal band Nova Riot has released a new music video for “Midnight Coven Crush.” The visually striking and provocative clip was directed by frontwoman Nova Ray. It serves as the second visual preview from the group’s upcoming debut full length album.

Operating out of Durant, Oklahoma, the trio describes their specific sound as bubblegum metal, blending heavy hard rock instrumentation with accessible, melodic hooks. Thematically, “Midnight Coven Crush” explores the reclamation of bodily autonomy and challenges societal stigmas. The accompanying music video visually reinforces these concepts by placing its characters in positions of power, utilizing horror inspired aesthetics to deliver an unapologetic narrative centered on taking control and rewriting traditional roles.

Northern Michigan doom metal band Mothertomb has officially announced their debut full length album, Dying to Live. The new record is scheduled to arrive independently this upcoming week on July 14. Recorded at Death Box Records in Charlevoix, Michigan, the album was produced, mixed, and mastered by the band’s bassist, Alton Minor, alongside the rest of the group.

Thematically, the five track collection explores concepts of transformation, suffering, and the eternal struggle between darkness and light. Drawing heavy lyrical inspiration from Welsh folklore, the record weaves allegorical narratives centered on ancient spirits and inner demons. Musically, the group builds a foundation of traditional doom metal, incorporating elements of stoner rock, sludge, and heavy gothic atmospheres to capture these sonic dualities.

Operating as a four piece unit featuring vocalist Alice Gawlinski, guitarist Chance Gawlinski, bassist Minor, and percussionist Mike Benitez, the group’s origins and moniker are deeply tied to their local environment. The name Mothertomb was specifically inspired by a historic April 2025 ice storm that devastated Northern Michigan, leaving the local forests encased in thick ice, a visually striking but catastrophic event that the band viewed as Mother Nature’s tomb. Dying to Live will be available to stream across all major digital platforms.
