    It is hard to talk about making a ‘hall of fame’ in relation to rock ‘n’ roll without getting into clichés. It is far more interesting to consider a hall of rock ‘n’ roll survivors. Those legends who lived, toured and recorded through the wildest of decades and are still doing it. At the very centre of any such discussion has to be The Rolling Stones and Ronnie Wood.

    Tonight, The Rolling Stones’ new kid Ronnie Wood is taking to the stage at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town for his first full solo tour in 16 years.

    At age 79, he still looks and sounds every inch the part, strutting on stage with a massive grin. Opening with It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It) is about as Ronnie Wood as it gets, and it is a great way to get every fan in the room singing along.

    Wood himself was never a virtuoso, riff master or even fiery lead player. If anything, his skill has always been weaving with whatever band and guitarists he happens to be playing with, looking effortlessly cool all the while.

    Songs like The Faces Flying and his own Mystifies Me fit that bill perfectly. Wood is still groovy, loose and very charming. He has also got two truly awesome singers on stage with him to help with some of the heavy lifting.

    Frequent collaborator Imelda May brings the jazzy, moody charm while Chanel Haynes has the lungs to pull off Tina Turner’s River Deep, Mountain High without even breaking a sweat.

    Digging deeper into the Stones back catalogue with the funky, reggae flavoured Hey Negrita is an inspired move. It is hardly The Rolling Stone’s peak, but it is refreshing and fun to hear it live again after so long.

    One wishes he kept digging, but instead Wood shuffles through blues and soul standards like Willie Dixon’s Spoonful and Chuck Berry’s Wee Wee Hours to Aretha Franklin’s Chain Of Fools.

    Ronnie’s solo catalogue still holds some gems, though. One prime example is the Bob Dylan-penned Seven Days. The stormy, foreboding love song is probably Wood’s finest straight-ahead rocker.

    Hearing The Faces Ooh La La followed by arguably the greatest The Rolling Stones song, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, is a joy. 

    The band then swerves into a rather excellent version of the Jeff Beck Group’s chugging, stuttering blues rocker Plynth (Water Down The Drain). At this point, Wood and his band are fighting the venue’s 11.00 pm curfew.

    The band teases Rod Stewart’s Gasoline Alley before the final big payoff hit, The Faces Stay With Me. It is a brilliant way to end. Ronnie and his band dash off the stage, have what looks to be a quick huddle with the venue staff, before running back on, saying they have sorted the curfew.

    Oddly, Wood chooses a pair of lesser-known solo songs, Breathe On Me and Outlaws, to complete the evening’s encore. It feels rather anticlimactic after The Faces and The Stones, but it hardly matters.

    In the end, Ronnie Wood is really one of the last of his kind, never to be reproduced. A Rockstar with a capital R, from when the term still had a meaning.

    Even pushing 80, Wood has aged like a fine wine or, maybe better, a solid guitar. We should all be grateful he is still sharing his music with the world and that we are lucky enough to witness it.

  • “This is going to be one hell of a bill”: Trivium and In Flames announce huge co-headline tour, Paleface Swiss and Vola supporting

    US metalcore beloveds Trivium and Swedish melodic death metal luminaries In Flames have teamed up for a co-headline tour across Europe and the UK.

    Supported by deathcore upstarts Paleface Swiss and Danish prog metal outfit Vola, the bands will start the run with a leg of Irish and UK shows from March 29 to April 4, including a stop at the 10,000-capacity Alexandra Palace in London. Trivium will be the last band on for these gigs.

    Then, from April 6 to May 7, the package will continue across the continental mainland. The shows in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland will be headlined by In Flames. See the full list of dates below.

    Artist pre-sale tickets go live Wednesday, August 26, at 10am CEST (9am BST), ahead of general sale from Friday, August 28, at 10am CEST (9am BST), via Trivium.org and InFlames.com.

    Trivium comment: “We’re beyond stoked to be joining forces with our longtime friends In Flames once again for another legendary run across Europe and the UK.     The announcement follows Trivium’s singer/guitarist Matt Heafy taking the stage with In Flames at the Swedish band’s Gothenburg festival, Goteborg Brinner, last weekend. The frontman sang their 1996 song Artifacts Of The Black Rain.

    Last month, the two bands announced a run of North American shows together, with Trivium headlining and In Flames special guest. With Orbit Culture, Fit For An Autopsy and Frozen Soul supporting, the tour will make its way across the US and Canada in November and December this year.

    Trivium teased the “unofficial start” of their “next era” with the announcement of their North American shows. They haven’t released an album since 2021’s In The Court Of The Dragon but have been working on new music in 2026. Their upcoming, 11th record will be their first with new drummer Alex Rudinger (ex-Whitechapel).

    Meanwhile, In Flames continue to tour in promotion of their 2023 album, Foregone. It marked the band’s return to their melodic death metal sound, following many years exploring alt-metal and electronic textures.

    Trivium’s Heafy has spoken multiple times about the influence In Flames have had on him and his bandmates. After his Goteborg Brinner appearance, he wrote on social media: “We’ve toured with In Flames six times now since 2005; and it’s been amazing to be able to go from a super fan, to a peer, to close friends.”

  • A View From The O2: Hollywood Vampires (Spike)

    Walking into the O2 on a Wednesday night to see The Jesus And Mary Chain (10) on a support slot feels a bit strange. Anyone who knows my taste knows what this band means to me. 

    From the noise and feedback of Psychocandy right through to the present day, they’re part of my musical DNA. So treating them as an opening act was always going to be a hard mental adjustment.

    That said, Reid and company delivered a fantastic, albeit short, seven-song set. They didn’t mess about. Opening with JAMCOD, they locked straight into that moody, feedback-drenched groove. Hearing April Skies, Blues From A Gun, and Some Candy Talking back-to-back in an arena was a treat, even if the room was still filling up. 

    By the time they rolled through Happy When It Rains, Just Like Honey, and a menacing Reverence, they had shown exactly why their influence still hangs heavy over modern rock and shoegaze. They were in top form, and seven tracks honestly just left me wanting a full headline set.

    I’d caught Alice Cooper out in Daytona earlier in the year, so I knew what to expect from him as the frontman for The Hollywood Vampires (8) a proper, full-fat rock ‘n’ roll spectacle. And they certainly delivered on that front.

    The Vampires set is essentially the ultimate high-budget covers night celebrating dead friends and rock royalty, anchored by Alice, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen.

    I was sceptical about Depp on guitar but he can play, he did a few vocals too but the mix didn’t do him any favours.

    The band kicked off with a couple of their own songs I Want My Now and Raise The Dead before diving headfirst into a massive list of classics. Alice sounded great on I’m Eighteen, and the band pulled off a surprisingly dark rendition of Velvet Underground’s Venus in Furs and Killing Joke’s The Death And Resurrection Show.

    The covers kept coming thick and fast, Jim Carroll’s People Who Died (where Ozzy probably got the biggest cheer of the night as he appeared on the film of all the people mentioned in the song was shown), Johnny Thunders’ You Can’t Put Your Arms Round A Memory, Aerosmith tracks, The Who’s Baba O’Riley, and a massive crowd-singalong for David Bowie’s Heroes. Closing out the main set with School’s Out blended into Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall was pure theatrical fun.

    Then came the encore. Bringing out Ronnie Wood for The Train Kept A-Rollin’, The Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar, and Jeff Beck’s Hi Ho Silver Lining was a genuine surprise and a great moment to end on.

    I went to the O2 specifically for The Jesus and Mary Chain, but the Vampires proved to be a thoroughly entertaining bonus. A solid night of classic riffs, nostalgia, and top-tier showmanship.
