  • Matador – Above, Below, and So (Review)

Matador are a post-metal band from the UK and this is their third album. Matador play a compelling mix of post-metal, doom, sludge, and post-rock. That’s a lot of tags, but the music brings them together quite seamlessly. Above, Below, and So contains 42 minutes of material, and it’s a record that is worth spending … Continue reading “Matador – Above, Below, and So (Review)”
  • Cryptic Shift – Overspace & Supertime (Review)

  • Greg Puciato Issues Statement on His Departure from Better Lovers: “No Bad Blood”

Greg Puciato 2020 by Stephen Odom

Earlier today, some breaking news shocked the metal community when Better Lovers announced that they were splitting with vocalist Greg Puciato. At the time, not a whole lot of information was offered up by the band, only that they were continuing with the new album and they wished their outgoing vocalist the best.

Well, not long ago Puciato posted an Instagram story sharing the band’s statement and providing some commentary of his own:

    “NO BAD BLOOD
    EVERYONE’S COOL
    DON’T SPECULATE
LOVE THESE PEOPLE AND LOVE THE BAND
ROOTING FOR THEM ALL COLLECTIVELY AND INDIVIDUALLY
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING THE LAST FEW YEARS SPECIAL
    LONG LIVE THE FROG”

As it stands, it sounds like Puciato and the rest of Better Lovers are parting ways amicably. Without any more details, that’s pretty much all we’ve got to go on at this time.

Looking forward, Puciato is going to be just fine, since he’s got his own thing going with the revival of The Black Queen.

  • Fast, Feral and Fully Hatched: MEDIA PUZZLE Join REGURGITATOR For JUKEBOXXIN Tour

Interview by Ali Williams Generally speaking, bands spend years in rehearsal rooms crafting a “carefully curated sonic identity.” Others however, make an EP in a uni dorm room in a single day just to “see what happens”. Meet Tom, the founding member of Lismore’s Media Puzzle, who definately falls in the latter category. In this […]
  • Track Premiere: Zanjeer – ‘F*ck Berlin, Free Falasteen’

Berlin-based hardcore punks Zanjeer take aim at the systems reinforcing oppression in nations around the world on their new album, Seher-e-Maqhoor (English: “Dawn of the Oppressed”). Musically, it’s a concoction of classic hardcore punk, the band citing Ratos de Porão and Raw Power as major influences, with an outside coating of extreme on top, like you’ll hear on new song “Fuck Berlin, Free Falasteen.” “Falesteen” is the Arabic word for Palestine.

Vocalist Dozakhi (formerly of Pakistani hardcore punk bands Mulitnational Corporations and Dead Bhuttos) delivers lyrics in three languages.  On “Fuck Berlin,” Dozakhi primarily sings in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan. By singing in Urdu, Dozakhi draws lines between the politics of Pakistan and those of other oppressed people everywhere. “Fuck Berlin, Free Falasteen” also features vocals delivered in English and Hebrew.

“Lyrically mixing Urdu, Hebrew and English, ‘Fuck Berlin Free Falasteen’ talks about anti-Palestine positions among Germans who are compensating for Holocaust guilt,” Dozakhi says. “Over the years, these attitudes have also carried Islamophobic and orientalist perceptions of the Middle East, aligning with wars and narratives that support US imperialism in the region.”

You can listen to the new song, and view its accompanying video, below. Seher-e-Maqhoor is out on April 3 by way of Neon Nile Records.
