Interview with Elchivo
Elchivo is a heavy metal band from Mexico, and they played this year at Wacken Open Air. We also got the chance to interview them!
Benedetta
I’m here with the amazing Elchivo. How are you doing guys?
Elchivo
Good, thank you.
Benedetta
You’re playing Wacken in the anniversary edition. How does it feel?
Elchivo
It’s amazing, it’s one of the biggest stages for metal in the world. I mean, how could we not be happy and feel like this is a huge accomplishment for the band. So, yeah, really happy, and also with all the support from Mexicans and Latin people, it’s amazing. Yeah, it was great to see so many people from our country coming out to support. And that happens a lot with Mexicans, like wherever we are, it becomes Mexico. So Germany became Mexico for 20 minutes today and it was fucking amazing.
Benedetta
Since you have a lot of experience in live shows, but you also have experience in recording music, do you think that the life of an artist is a lonely life?
Elchivo
I don’t know, maybe a lawyer also can have a lonely life, right? I don’t know, it depends on the person. I think it’s not. Maybe you’re trying to say that touring is really hard, but sometimes it is. I think in the end we’re a band and we’re together in this. So even though sometimes you get lonely, there’s another three people who are always with you, support you, make things happen for you, take care of you and stuff like that. It can get lonely, but in the end we’re always together in this. How the fuck are you gonna feel lonely with all those people out there cheering and celebrating your music? I think loneliness, in that way that you say it, is more of a state of mind than an actual fact. People come and go. Loneliness can be labeled that way, because when big bands tour, they only see their family when they go home only for a little while. And all the rest of the year it’s like touring and new faces every time, and that could be lonely. But that’s a state of mind, traveling with a family, us four, or the band, they must be a family. If not, it is lonely. We never get lonely and we never get bored. We might miss family and people we love, but in the end, loneliness is not part of us.
Benedetta
Do you think that we will ever have some equality between men and women in the metal world?
Elchivo
Well, we sure hope so. There are so many talented women nowadays in the metal scene. I, for one, am super fond of a bunch of singers who are women, and I think they’re just blowing it out of the park. It’s amazing what they’re doing. And definitely, there’s a rise in it. You can see it everywhere. There’s a lot of really cool, great bands. What’s her name? Castle Rat? I love her. Jinjer, there’s also these girls from Austin, Texas called Die Spitz. Spiritbox. So, it’s definitely there. I think that shit’s been over for a few years, and it’s a dying idea, fortunately. Yeah, and men are also very attracted to women in the metal scene. There’s Epica, right? There’s Arch Enemy. There’s all these bands that are legendary. Yeah. Doro, of course. It starts from the 60s, 70s. So, a lot of women in the rock industry. Just like any other type of discrimination, racism, classism, or whatever, the best way is just stop talking about it. Just stop talking about it and let shit be. You know? That’s my two cents, man. Yeah, go girls.
Benedetta
Guys, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Is there anything else you want to add to our viewers and readers?
Elchivo
Well, thank you so much for all the support. This has been an amazing and a great fucking day for metal. For us in Mexican metal, yeah.Follow El Chivo Temple on Instagram and everywhere. Thank you, Wacken. And thank you, Germany. They’ve treated us so well since we’ve been here. And we can’t wait to be here next fucking year!
