Anton, a Parisian post-punk project led by Anton Steinbock, carries itself with the severe romanticism of someone who owns more black coats than practical shoes, but their recent single Répression finds that severity loosening into something stranger, more fevered, and considerably more dangerous. Working with fellow coldwave artist Tout Debord, Steinbock pushes his music toward a place where devotion and psychic collapse keep borrowing each other’s clothes, while Leonid Diaghilev’s production gives the track enough space to breathe without sanding away its cold edge.

The guitars ring out in pale, eerie streaks, recalling Clan of Xymox during their 4AD era, while the bass keeps the floor beneath everything firm and deliberate. Synths reminiscent of Asylum Party and Little Nemo deepen the song’s French coldwave character, and its brooding melancholy brings to mind Scottish band Lowlife. Anton keeps these affinities personal through Steinbock’s low, echoing delivery and the movement between French and English. His voice sounds less like a performance than a private argument accidentally amplified through the walls of an empty Church.

This tension suits the lyrics, which circle despair, fixation, religious need, and the exhausting effort of trying to escape thoughts that have already memorized the route home. Emptiness becomes almost physical here, while religious language turns love into a strange transaction involving devotion, punishment, salvation, and sacrifice. There is a plea buried inside the song, though Anton wisely lets it remain uneasy. Comfort carries a price, paradise looks compromised, and the promise of another night together begins to resemble a trap with excellent lighting.

Tout Debord’s video takes those concerns and gives them a suitably Catholic mindspace. Performance footage is layered over religious images, cemeteries, stone, and monuments, with additional cinematography by Sylvester Engbrox adding another layer of distance between the body and whatever eternity is supposed to mean. The images of permanence become almost sarcastic beside a song obsessed with emotional states that keep mutating by the hour. Faith may promise forever; the people on screen still have to get through tonight.

Répression also marks a useful turn after Never Freed Myself, continuing Anton’s taste for austere post-punk while sharpening the drama and widening the frame. Since the project began in 2024, Steinbock has moved quickly from solo recordings to a live configuration with Gabriela Guyez, building a set that can pivot from harder post-punk material toward synth-heavy darkwave ballads. Répression works best as a collision between movement and paralysis: the body gets the beat, the mind gets the bad news, and the track keeps one boot planted firmly on the dance floor.

Anton has made a song for anyone who has ever mistaken obsession for revelation and then had to live through the morning after.

They introduced their debut album Begin Yr Singing with “Fear&Trimbling,” a study in muscular intellectual noodling that surprisingly built to an emotionally devastating orchestral finale. It was tremendous.

Brady Ebert, who co-founded Turnstile and played guitar on all three of their albums, has been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial on attempted murder charges. Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Karla Smith made the ruling on Tuesday and found Ebert a danger to himself and others, remanding him to the custody of the Maryland Department of Health. The trial had been due to start this week. Ebert is accused of striking William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates, with a car earlier this year in Silver Spring, and he denies the charges. His competency will be reviewed at a hearing on 19 January 2027.

What The Judge Ruled

Judge Smith’s finding does two things. It says Ebert can’t currently take part in his own defence, and it puts him into state health custody rather than jail while that’s addressed.

His trial had been set for 25 September. It won’t happen. The next date is 19 January 2027, when the court will look at whether his competency has been restored.

The hearing itself was difficult. Ebert argued with the judge and was removed from the courtroom by officers after an outburst, according to reporting from The Baltimore Banner and Metal Injection. He has said the case against him is an ‘extreme miscarriage of justice’ and has accused police of obtaining his arrest warrant illegally.

His attorney, Mark Sobel, put it plainly outside the ruling. ‘Hopefully, he’ll get the proper treatment for his competency to be restored, so we can proceed to trial in this case,’ he said.

This Is Not A Verdict, And The Case Isn’t Over

Worth being clear about, because it’s the part people get wrong.

Being found incompetent to stand trial has nothing to do with guilt or innocence. It’s a finding about whether a defendant can understand the proceedings and help their own lawyer right now. The charges stay in place. If competency is restored, the case goes to trial.

Ebert remains in custody, at a state health facility rather than a detention centre.

The Allegation

According to charging documents reported by The Baltimore Banner, Ebert drove at William Yates on a residential street in Silver Spring, Maryland earlier this year, then reversed, accelerated and struck him, leaving him with serious injuries to his lower legs.

Ebert faces attempted murder and related charges, and he was held without bond after his arrest. We covered the arrest when it happened and again when the charge was upgraded.

Ebert has denied all of it. He has called the police report a lie and said he acted in self defence. None of the allegations has been tested at trial, and now they won’t be for months.

Investigators were told by William Yates that Ebert had been in contact with the family repeatedly since the band split with him. His daughter told reporters that Ebert had been causing problems for them since he was removed from Turnstile.

Who Brady Ebert Is

Ebert started Turnstile in 2010 with Brendan Yates, Franz Lyons and Daniel Fang, in the Baltimore hardcore scene. He was on all three records: Nonstop Feeling, Time & Space and Glow On, the 2021 album that took the band from hardcore matinees to festival main stages and the Grammys.

The split came on 13 August 2022. The band’s statement was short: ‘Turnstile and guitarist Brady Ebert are parting ways. We are deeply grateful for our time together. Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.’ No reason was given, then or since. His last performance with them was a Jimmy Kimmel Live taping in March 2022.

Turnstile have kept climbing since. They took home two Grammys in February, which put them at the centre of the argument about heavy music and the awards, and they’re one of the bands behind hardcore’s move into the mainstream.

The band has not commented on the case.

What Happens Next

Ebert stays in the care of the Maryland Department of Health. Doctors there assess whether his competency can be restored with treatment. On 19 January the court reviews where that stands.

Three things can follow. Competency is restored and the case goes to trial. It isn’t restored and the review continues. Or, if it can’t be restored over a long enough period, the court considers other options under Maryland law, including civil commitment.

None of that is a resolution for the Yates family, who are months into this with a 79-year-old man recovering from a serious injury and no trial in sight.
