  • Ironic 80s Rock Band Night Ranger Returned to Astro

REVIEW BY DAVID TAYLOR AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT A CHADWICK | Go Venue Magazine

It was a hot one on Sunday, July 12 when Night Ranger came back to La Vista, Nebraska this time playing outdoors at the Astro Amphitheater.

Drew Cagle & The Reputation from Central Illinois was the opener. I was unfamiliar with this hard rock band, but I was impressed by the end of their set. These young guys, led by lead singer, Drew Cagle, were all incredible live musicians. They performed all original material that sounded great. I do wish they didn’t these mini outros to their songs towards the beginning of their set, it made it confusing if the song ended or not. But, regardless, great opening set for the evening. Night Ranger could’ve chosen a contemporary of theirs, but I’m glad they chose these young guys because they put on an incredible live performance.

Finally, the Nebraska crowd was ready for some Night Ranger. They put “Fight For Your Right” by the Beastie Boys to get the crowd pumped then they played the Godzilla theme music. What struck me the most about these guys is they had so much fun on stage and never took themselves too seriously. It was like watching a band play a party in your backyard. It’s kinda a miracle that you have three original members Jack Blades (bass and vocals), Brad Gillis (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums and vocals) performing so well. Like Jack Blades was running all over the stage and Brad Gillis is still in great shape, all around their 70s. They also had a mini acoustic set, including them performing a cover of Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer”. They even played some Damn Yankees, including “High Enough”. They played the hits towards the end of their set, ending with “(You Can Still) Rock in America”. And the concert got done around 8:45, which is a huge win in my book. I was really impressed by Night Ranger. Whereas their contemporaries maybe have one or two original members but maybe don’t have that talent that they used to, Night Ranger still does and I do believe they are worth your time and money.

    Bubblegum Cistern SYZYGY Review

The album opens with “Low Gravity,” immediately signaling a unique musical journey that feels psychedelic and distinctive. The duo merges multiple styles, spanning alternative, pop, rock, and avant-garde influences. The sound possesses an electronic quality, somewhat muffled, as if existing in its own limbo.

Following this is “Orbiting,” which creates somewhat dystopian atmospheres. The music feels like it is caught in a bubble, simultaneously reaching toward the future while connecting to the past. This duality produces a fascinating emotional experience, as listeners are drawn into a world where time feels fluid.

“Tether” follows, kicking off with pads that evoke the cinematic scores of John Carpenter. The song brings forth something Eastern in its harmonic lines, merging those elements with syncopated rhythms influenced by industrial music. This combination creates a rich, textured auditory experience, showcasing the band’s diverse influences.

    SYZYGY – Sound and Atmosphere

Another standout track is “Lunar Bound,” which cultivates an ethereal atmosphere layered with a powerful drumbeat. This energy sets an engaging rhythm, especially in the verses, before transitioning into a more dreamlike quality in the chorus. The balance between energetic and ethereal elements demonstrates the band’s artistic range.

“Space Time Don’t Continuum” reveals the visionary approach of this group further. The sound selection is unique, adding to the song’s allure. The harmonic and vocal progression within this piece is truly original, signifying the band’s commitment to innovative artistry. The track invites listeners to experience a musical narrative that defies conventional structures.

The album closes with “High Gravity,” another piece that resembles a cybernetic mirage. The overall production of the album is low-fidelity, enhancing its charm and evoking nostalgia reminiscent of old VHS tapes. This quality adds depth to the music, positioning the album within an avant-garde niche.

    SYZYGY – Performance and Production

This duo firmly follows its vision, steering clear of imitation. They carve a path that is distinctly their own. The uniqueness of their sound sets them apart in today’s music landscape.

“SYZYGY” is a significant exploration of genres. The collective influences woven throughout tell a compelling story that resonates with listeners. The band dares to tread a transformative musical path while staying true to their artistic identity.

Bubblegum Cistern are unafraid to experiment. Each track contributes uniquely to the vibrant tapestry of the album. This dedication to innovation ensures an unforgettable listening experience. The storytelling transcends mere melody, reaching deep into the listener’s psyche. “SYZYGY” invites listeners to introspect while enjoying the sound.

The fusion of styles leads to an engaging dialogue within the music. The way the tracks are organized fosters a fluid listening experience. The album is a striking invitation to a world of imagination.
