It is Friday, April 24, 2026, and if your neck isn’t already sore from headbanging, it’s about to be. This week has been an absolute landslide of high-caliber releases, ranging from the long-awaited return of nu-metal royalty to the bittersweet final bows of melodic death metal legends.

We do this every week because, let’s be honest, the “New Music Friday” algorithm can be a soulless mess. You don’t need a robot telling you what’s heavy; you need a breakdown from the trenches. From surprise Diablo IV tie-ins to heart-wrenching tribute tracks, here are the six songs that defined the last seven days in metal.

1. Korn – “Reward The Scars”

Bakersfield’s finest are officially back. In a massive surprise drop ahead of their headlining slot at Sick New World in Las Vegas tomorrow, Korn has unleashed “Reward The Scars.” This marks their first new music since 2022’s Requiem and features a brooding, mid-tempo groove that feels like classic 90s-era Korn updated for a darker age.

The track is tied to the Diablo IV: Lords of Hatred expansion (dropping April 28), and Jonathan Davis sounds more vital than ever. Interestingly, this is our first studio taste of the band without Fieldy on bass, though the low-end churn remains unmistakably thick.

2. At The Gates – “In Dark Distortion”

Today is a heavy day for the metal community as At The Gates releases their final album, The Ghost of a Future Dead. “In Dark Distortion” stands out as a haunting highlight. The track features the emotive, hoarse fury of the late Tomas Lindberg, whose vocals were captured in demo form before his tragic passing. With the return of founding guitarist Anders Björler, the song balances that signature Gothenburg “Statues of the Faithful” melody with a somber, rock-infused ringing chord structure that feels like a fitting, despondent farewell to a legend.

3. Periphery – “Everyone Dies Alone”

Djent is definitely not a genre—it’s a lifestyle, and Periphery is still the king of it. “Everyone Dies Alone” is the second single from their upcoming album A Pale White Dot (out May 15). Written alongside Caleb Shomo (Beartooth), the track is a masterclass in progressive dynamics. The band used 30-inch baritone guitars tuned to a gut-punching Drop A#0 for this record, and the results are massive. Spencer Sotelo’s range remains unmatched, moving from ethereal melodies to absolute guttural chaos in seconds.

4. August Burns Red – “Sonic Salvation” (feat. Jamie Hails)

The Pennsylvania metalcore titans are gearing up for their new record Season of Surrender (arriving June 5), and “Sonic Salvation” is the high-energy anthem we needed. Featuring a guest spot from Polaris vocalist Jamie Hails, the track is a frantic, technical assault that proves why ABR has remained at the top of the food chain for two decades. The dual-vocal attack between Hails and Jake Luhrs creates a layer of intensity that should make their current “Spring Horizons” co-headlining tour with The Amity Affliction a mandatory ticket.

5. Sepultura – “All Souls Rising”

As Sepultura continues their final farewell tour, they’ve gifted fans The Cloud of Unknowing EP today. “All Souls Rising” is the standout, marking the first studio recording featuring wunderkind drummer Greyson Nekrutman. His precision alongside Andreas Kisser’s legendary riffage proves that even as the band prepares to hang it up, they aren’t phoning it in. It’s fast, it’s thrashy, and it carries the weight of a band that knows its legacy is secure.

6. The Amity Affliction – “Kickboxer”

To celebrate the release of their ninth studio album, House of Cards, The Amity Affliction has dropped “Kickboxer.” This track is a raw, emotional powerhouse that addresses the band’s recent lineup turbulence following the split with Ahren Stringer. With Jonny Reeves (Kingdom of Giants) now cementing his place in the fold, “Kickboxer” showcases that signature Amity blend of soaring choruses and devastating breakdowns. The music video, shot live earlier this month, perfectly captures the high-stakes energy the band is bringing to the stage in 2026.

London, UK – UK metal force Day 40 return with a vengeance, dropping their brand new single “Tyrant of Syracuse” today. The track serves as the second single from their highly anticipated full-length album Phenomenon , set for worldwide release on June 12, 2026.
Following the release of the first single “Tunguska” earlier this year, Day 40 double down with a track that hits harder, cuts deeper, and expands their sonic arsenal. “Tyrant of Syracuse” showcases the band’s signature blend of thrash precision, melodic tension, and cinematic atmosphere, while pushing their sound into even more ambitious territory.

Sala Spectrum in Murcia will host a new night dedicated to live metal and rock on Saturday, April 25, 2026, featuring a lineup made up of EXILE, INSANITY, and UNRECHT, three acts set to come together at one of the most active venues in the local scene.

The night will be headlined by EXILE, a cover band that will perform some of the most recognizable classics of the genre, delivering a set designed for a full live experience in the venue.

They will be joined by INSANITY, a band that continues to build its presence on the national circuit with an intense and powerful live show, and UNRECHT, the guest act completing the lineup with their take on contemporary metal.

The event is part of the regular programming of Sala Spectrum, a key venue in Murcia known for its strong support of the metal and rock scene, as well as emerging bands.

The show will start at 9:00 PM, with tickets priced at €10.

This weekend, nu metal band Coal Chamber will grace the Sick New World stage in Las Vegas. It’s a big moment for the band that reunited back in 2023, but it’s got a whole new meaning for drummer Mikey Cox. And that’s because he’s faced down and beaten stage 3 cancer.

The shocking news that he even received a cancer diagnosis came in an Instagram post, in which he outlined not just his diagnosis from April 1, 2025, but the “dark” and difficult road he experienced afterward. And though his treatments included radiation, chemo, and surgery, he managed to get out the other side and enter the recovery stage.

Now, with nothing but good news on the cancer front hopefully on the horizon, Cox announced that he’s partering with Fxck Cancer to auction off a custom, 1-of-1 drum kit with the proceeds going to cancer support, awareness, and research. Cox said in a prepared statement that he chose Fxck Cancer because of how they approach cancer awareness, opting to focus on early detection with younger demographics and the music world as a whole.

Rather than mince his words and paraphrase, here’s Cox’s announcement in full:

“GRATITUDE. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot, but it hits differently for me these days.

“April 1, 2025, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. I’m not unique. It feels like a lot of us are dealing with this or know someone who is. It’s dark, it’s scary, and it changes the lives of everyone in its orbit.

“The first thing I said to my wife was that I was going to fight with everything I had for my family! There were a lot of days I couldn’t make it out of bed, but I didn’t want cancer to define me. So, I finished building the house I was working on with my Bash Construction Group company, and I wrote some of the best music of my life! After a yearlong battle and absolutely brutal rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and eventually surgery, I’m so grateful to be able to say I made it to CANCER FREE.

“The second thing I said to myself was that I wanted to create something positive out of this situation, and that’s where we are today. I hope you’ll join me as I partner with Fxck Cancer to auction off a custom, one-of-a-kind drum kit from ddrum, Scorpion Percussion, TRX Cymbals, and Gator Cases with proceeds to bring awareness, support and resources to those who may find themselves in this unpredictable and unwanted community of warriors.

“I’ll have so many people to thank and share my story with in the coming days, and I will be highlighting some of the amazing people and organizations that are working with us to make this goal of mine a reality. Today I celebrate life, healing, and the strength it takes to survive. I cannot wait to get back on stage post-cancer. These upcoming shows are going to be something truly special.

“I chose to partner with Fxck Cancer, because of its bold, direct approach to a disease. Their work breaks stigma, encourages honest conversations, and promotes early detection in a way that resonates – especially with younger audiences and the music community. Its unapologetic voice makes the message feel urgent, relatable and empowering, helping people face cancer head-on instead of avoiding it.”
