Anthrax needed a drummer in a hurry, and Mike Heller answered the call. The Raven and former Fear Factory drummer sat in for the New York thrash veterans on Sept. 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, where Anthrax was supporting Iron Maiden and Megadeth. Heller, who lives in the city, took over for longtime drummer Charlie Benante, who could not make the show for undisclosed reasons.

Heller described the day on social media afterward. “So I woke up today thinking that I was gonna spend a nice day with my cats and my drumpad… then out of absolutely nowhere at 2:00pm I get a call from my buddy Dirk Verbeuren [Megadeth drummer]… he asks me if I’m in town tonight, and if I might know any Anthrax songs, and if I can fill in for Charlie Benante at 6:30pm tonight on the Maiden / Megadeth / Anthrax tour…. Well… I didn’t know any Anthrax songs on the drums, but I quickly charted two out, raced down to the Alamodome… sat in traffic and got thrown to the wrong place to park.. finally got inside, sat down with the guys in Anthrax for less than an hour… charted the other songs as they told me how the versions they play live are different from the album… and then went on stage in front of 56,000 people or whatever, and did my best… Holy crap! How the HELL did I get here?!?!

“I have to thank Jon Donais, Frank Bello, Scott Ian, Joey Belladonna, Armando Aguirre, Paul Collis and all the Anthrax crew for having faith in me to be able to pull this off… and of course Dirk and Chris Jericho for vouching for me!!

“I still have no idea what happened! Next time, I hope I get more than a few hours to try to learn the songs… and hopefully I would actually be able to move the drums into a comfortable playing position for me… but this is a night I will never forget!”

This is not the first time Benante has missed a date. Starting around 2012, carpal tunnel syndrome, a repetitive stress condition that affects the hand and wrist, kept him off certain shows. More recently, his commitments with the reunited Pantera, with whom he has played live since late 2022, have also cost Anthrax some dates.

Anthrax is on the road behind its twelfth studio album, Cursum Perficio, which came out Sept. 18 via Megaforce in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast in Europe. The Latin title translates to “My journey has come to an end,” “My journey is over” or “I complete my journey.” It is the band’s first album in ten years, following 2016’s For All Kings, which landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Anthrax marked its 40th anniversary in 2021 with a run of special events. Guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilkerstarted the band in Queens in New York City on July 18, 1981. It became one of the first thrash bands out of the East Coast and is regarded as a leader of the genre alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.

Over five decades, Anthrax has released 12 studio albums, earned multiple gold and platinum certifications and picked up six Grammy nominations. The band has played thousands of shows since 1984, including a headlining night at Madison Square Garden and a Yankee Stadium date with the “Big Four.”

These days, the Flaming Lips are a band in some disarray, and it’s nice to be reminded of a time what that wasn’t the case. Anniversary reissues are good for that. When they released their 2006 album At War With The Mystics, the Lips were already a psych-rock institution who’d become an unlikely touring sensation. Their previous album, 2002’s Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, was the biggest thing they’d ever made, and it might still be their defining record. Naturally, they responded to that success by getting weirder.
