Motionless In White have given us another taste of their upcoming album, and it finds them in their most soaring and epic form.

Titled ‘R.I.P.’, it’s a gorgeously gothic cut that comes with some powerful guest vocals from Skylar Grey.

It’s the third track we’ve heard from the band’s upcoming album ‘Decades’ – following the triumphant ‘Afraid Of The Dark‘ and their huge collaboration with Corey Taylor on ‘Playing God’ – which is set to arrive on July 17 via Roadrunner Records.

Speaking on ‘R.I.P.’, Chris Motionless has said:

“Skylar’s voice brought it to another level that I never could have achieved on my own. I really love the lyrics for this song. Even though I wrote it through a romantic lens, I love that it can be applied to any moment in your life when you’ve had a falling out with someone you deeply care about, whether that’s a best friend, family member, or romantic partner.

“The song really hones in on the deafening silence that follows after you’ve said hurtful things to one another that you wish you could take back. It’s meant to capture the tension that exists in that quiet space of separation. You want to apologize and make things right, but you don’t know how. You want to tell them you love them more than anything and can’t live without them, but there’s a lot of pain on both sides that has to be confronted first. All the while, you’re left with the crippling uncertainty of whether the relationship can ever recover and move forward, or if it’s destined to be laid to rest and gone forever.”

Chris has also opened up about the process of creating their latest album, and the next era of Motionless In White:

“We were never afraid to take risks. This band has not only lasted two decades, but we’ve also outlasted all of the obstacles we’ve faced. We’re still grinding. No matter how far we expand the universe that is Motionless In White, we’re going to preserve the heart, soul, and roots of where we came from. We are never going to abandon heartfelt, emotional, and heavy songs. We are never going to abandon what mattered to us the most when we started. We’re finding new ways to emphasize those stories with exciting sounds and looks, but the vision is the same. It’s always been this grand, dramatic, and theatrical entity. I’m proud we haven’t gotten comfortable.”

Portland noise-sludge trio HISS arrive with some ugly credentials already baked in. The band may be new, but its members have been grinding through the Pacific Northwest heavy underground for years: guitarist/vocalist Robert Comitz and bassist/vocalist Kirk Evans previously played together in Still/Form, while drummer Chase Hall also logged time with Comitz in Marriage + Cancer. Put another way, HISS are not a clean break from those bands so much as the heaviest, most hostile pieces dragged into a new room and left to rot.

On debut album A Cheapened Crown, Hiss lean into sludgy, heavy noise rock that refuses to settle neatly into metal, post-hardcore or noise-rock orthodoxy. The guitars scrape and lurch with the same kind of disturbing, jarring tension that made Marriage + Cancer feel so unstable, while the low-end heft recalls the more crushing side of Still/Form. But HISS are less interested in genre lineage than in impact: driving heaviness, ugly riffs, punishing rhythms, and Comitz’s raspy vocals add an extra layer of unease over the whole thing.

“‘100% Wool’ is about how people will do anything to get a lick of the boot,” Comitz tells Decibel. “Like, they want to lick it… they need to lick it.”

Recorded at LoRent Studio, mixed by Bob Cheek and mastered by Carl Saff, A Cheapened Crown sounds carefully built without losing its sense of physical damage. It is heavy in the old-fashioned way: not over-slick, not over-explained, just dense enough to make the floor feel questionable.

A Cheapened Crown is out August 21 as a three-way release between Diptired Records, Hex Records and the band. Stream the full album below and pre-order it via Hex Records or Diptired Records.

London alt-pop outfit Exploring Birdsong have announced their forthcoming debut album, Every House We Built, set for release on June 26 via Long Branch Records. Featuring previously released tracks “42” and “Romanticise,” the record sees the band turn inwards, drawing from lived experiences to explore the complexities of relationships spanning friendships, family and romance. Using houses as a central metaphor, the album reflects on how connections are carefully built with intention yet can unexpectedly collapse, leaving behind the lingering weight of something once thought permanent.

The run of dates will see the band kick things off in Glasgow on September 23, before heading south for shows in London and Bristol and wrapping up the tour with a final date in Manchester on September 26.
