  • Attila Are Trying To Sell Spots On Their Pre-Show Playlist

People are always trying to invent new forms of payola, to monetize parts of the live-music experience that did not previously exist within the pay-for-play domain. The latest piece of that pie that someone’s trying to sell involves the pre-concert playlist, the music that’s piped into a venue before a band takes the stage. Generally, artists use that music to set a vibe, or possibly give a tiny bit of shine to their friends’ bands, or even to create an ironic juxtaposition for when the actual act takes the stage. But now, someone is trying to turn that playlist into real estate that can be sold. Thankfully, the person doing the selling is the guy from Attila, so it’s probably going to fail.

  • Adelaide Blues Trio 63 DELUXE Return With New Album ‘Side Ways’, To Be Released On February 25

Adelaide modern blues trio 63 Deluxe are set to release their second full-length album, Side Ways, on Wednesday, February 25. Featuring 12 all new tracks Side Ways finds the band digging deeper into groove, feel and songwriting without losing the raw edge that defines their sound.

Featuring of some of Adelaide’s most seasoned players; vocalist/guitarist Anthony Scott, Jack Thomson on drums and Bret Hann on bass, 63 Deluxe have built a reputation on instinct rather than flash. A tight, road-tested unit where blues, soul, funk and rock sit comfortably side by side. Side Ways follows their Nashville-recorded EP Memphis To Nashville, (which peaked at #1 on the ABARAC – Australian Blues & Roots Airplay Charts), but this time the band kept things closer to home, recording in Adelaide with frontman, Anthony Scott behind the desk.

The shift back to home turf has paid off. Side Ways captures a band more relaxed in its skin and willing to stretch out musically, moving from gritty blues workouts to funk driven grooves and soulful, late-night textures seamlessly.

First single ‘The Fire Inside’, set the tone. A driving, funk-leaning track with plenty of movement, it’s a reminder that while 63 Deluxe may be rooted in the blues, they’re not confined by it. There’s energy here, but also restraint, the sound of experienced musicians playing to the song rather than the spotlight.

With Side Ways, 63 Deluxe continue to carve out their own corner of the Australian blues landscape. unforced, unpretentious and built completely on feel.

Side Ways is released on February 25,

  • Altered Five Blues Band: Hammer & Chisel Review

The Milwaukee-based blues powerhouse Altered Five Blues Band returns with their eighth studio album. Titled Hammer & Chisel, the new record hits the shelves on February 27th via Blind Pig Records. On select tracks, the quintet is joined by Jason Ricci on harmonica, as well as Max Abrams and Julio Diaz on sax and trumpet, respectively. The album, produced by Tom Hambridge, consists of 11 original tracks showcasing exactly what made this award-winning group remain at the forefront of contemporary blues for over two decades.

Hit play and the first few bars of “I Got It Good” drag you right in. The drums pump energy with driving rhythm, while the horns blast in high register. Bluesy, gritty guitar work, a creative bass line, and Hammond screaming in the background. The band works together in perfect sync to make this track irresistible. Oh, and did I mention Jeff Taylor’s vocals? They are something else – radiating power and soul. “Dare Me to Do It” is a slow blues number with overdriven harmonica solos throughout. Sonically, this track slightly resembles early Kenny Wayne Shepherd work. Lovely piano adds to the rich soundscape that is elevated even higher with a killer wah-soaked guitar solo. This is followed by a mean shuffle tune called “Who Can You Trust”, and a jazzy, cosy, major-key slow blues “Lotta Love Left in Me” with some amazing piano playing.

A tight drum beat is the backbone of the groovy and rebellious title track. Hats off for absolutely nailing the dynamics in “Hammer & Chisel”. Certain subtleties leading into the guitar solo only make it hit harder later down the line. Drums switch to half-time on occasion, and the band tries to play as little as possible during verses to really allow Taylor’s vocals to shine. Great track! Speeding things right back up is “Can’t Shake It”, an upbeat blues tune drawing inspiration from the blues masters of old. Cool tom-laden drum groove in the mid-section followed by a brief bass solo make this track really tasty. On the other hand, it’s the guitar that stands out in “Headline Blues”, proving that the ‘dirt’ is not in effects but in the hands of the guitarist – wonderful performance.

Next up, it’s a slow-burner packed with emotion, titled “Hell or High Water”. My word, when those vocals hit, they send shivers down the spine. “My Love Ain’t a Lie” is a funky track with a great question-response dynamic between the guitar and keys in the intro and choruses, followed by “Crazy One”, a song that is as fun as the title suggests. The quirky piano adds sprinkles on top of a slightly paradoxical groove – laid back but driving forward at the same time, very difficult to explain, you got to feel it. The album is then closed in style with an empowering statement delivered with soulful vocals in “The Will of Man”.

Hammer & Chisel is an honest, no-nonsense, sonically coherent collection of truly well-written songs covering a wide range of styles and dynamics all put together with great taste and musical maturity. Top-notch musicianship, blues vocals masterclass, and undeniable band chemistry is what makes this record so special. Blues fans, you have every reason to be excited – this one is a must-hear!

  • Sex Pistols Feat. Frank Carter Announce UK Tour

Sex Pistols and Frank Carter are heading out on tour around the UK again, celebrating 50 years of punk as a genre and an ideology.

1976 was the year when punk went from the underbelly into the public consensus, with Sex Pistols taking over venues across London such as The Marquee, The 100 Club, The Nashville and a residency at the El Paradiso, before heading into the studio to begin work on their first, and only album, the iconic ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols’. It’s a year that kick-started a movement that still has power, presence and purpose all these years later.

And now, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Glen Matlock and Frank are bringing it to the masses once more.

Paul had this to say about being back at it over the last two years, stating, “We’ve had a blast. People want to come and see us play live. If I must say so myself, we are a great live band!”

Here are what the dates look like:

    DECEMBER

    07 – DUBLIN 3Arena
    09 – EDINBURGH Corn Exchange
    10 – GLASGOW Academy
    18 – LONDON Brixton Academy
    20 – LONDON Eventim Apollo

Tickets will be on general sale from February 27 from 9am from right here.

And if you fancy a taste of what to expect, here’s what it was like when they performed at Download Festival last Summer.
