  • Cheap Trick | All Washed Up – New Studio Release Review

Cheap Trick are nowhere close to the title of their new album, All Washed Up. The iconic Illinois rock foursome have been at their unique brand of rocking’ pop for five decades now. Producing classic hits like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police,” “The Flame,” and “Surrender,” enjoying their first big fame with their triple-platinum live album At Budokan, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, constant touring and selling more than 20 million albums, Cheap Trick’s 21st studio album is worthy of their iconic status.

Opening with the throbbing title track, vocalist Robin Zander growling in a lower range we usually hear from a man considered still one of the best singers in rock and roll, he kicks up to his higher range on the next tune, the more melodic (still rockin’ though) “All Wrong Long Gone.” Benefitting from a layered thickly in Julian Raymon production, we get the best of Zander — his high sailing singing tripping on the ballad “The Best Thing,” the infectious single “Twelve Gates,” and the pop-rockin’ of “Bad Blood.”

The record ends with “Wham Boom Bang,” a fun oddity featuring ukelele and clarinet that lets the listener down softly. Guitarist Rick Nielsen’s lead lands just right and transforms the song from high camp to a wonderfully sincere and upbeat way to conclude All Washed Up. It doesn’t look like Cheap Trick will be hanging it up anytime soon and presenting an in-your-face, rock poppin’ album that sees the band staying the pace of their particular game.

  • Jethro Tull | Aqualung Live – Live Release Review

Back in 2005, Jethro Tull released Aqualung Live, which captured a live performance of their classic 1971 album, Aqualung. Performed by the lineup of singer and flautist Ian Anderson, guitarist Martin Barre, drummer Doane Perry, keyboardist Andrew Giddings, and bassist Jonathan Noyce, the concert was recorded in 2004 as part of Sirius XM’s “Then Again Live” series at their studio in Washington DC. Twenty years later, it’s been remastered and reissued.

Jethro Tull’s best-selling album spawned FM-staples “Locomotive Breath,” “Cross-Eyed Mary,” and of course the title track, plus hit on some rather lofty lyrical themes. Although the band tickled across these songs a-plenty at this point, what’s wonderful about them playing an entire album live is that the audience gets to hear those deep cuts. Coming from Aqualung, they rate right up there with the hits. Running through the songs in order, we are instantly reminded of the importance of song formatting across two sides of an album.

There is no ignoring the one-two punch opener of Aqualung’s title song and “Cross-Eyed Mary.” Both come off hard and fast here, but it’s Aqualung’s acoustic tunes that have always gotten to me, and in catching Jethro Tull in concert many times before, I don’t recall some of them being played. Songs like “Cheap Day Return” into “Mother Goose,” the latter showcasing Anderson’s voice, as he was losing a good amount of his vocal prowess in 2004. “Wond’ring Aloud,” with some beautiful playing from Giddings, features one of my all-time favorite lyrical lines: “And it’s only the giving that makes you what you are.”

The band rolls around an acoustic opening to “Hymn 43,” then kicks in full rocking at about the two-and-a-half-minute mark. Giddings is on top form for the classic piano beginning of “Locomotive Breath.” From there, we are into my favorite Jethro Tull tune, “Wind-Up.” Once again, Giddings is in top form, tickling the ivories behind Anderson’s school boy confession, creating a truly spine-chilling beginning. Then the band kicks in and away we go until things slow down again for the end.

There has been a long line of players in and out of Jethro Tull, led always by Ian Anderson, and they are still pumping out solid studio albums and touring to this day. Still, I am tickled pink about this particular lineup of musicians — who had all been with Tull for a while at that point, especially Barre — playing Aqualung all the way through. Hard to imagine any Jethro Tull not feeling the same.

  • Hellkern Warriors’ Self-Titled Single Is Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Hellkern Warriors arrive with a self-titled single that feels like a portal into a darker, pulse-driven dimension.

Hellkern Warriors’ Self-Titled Single Is Out Now

The track draws heavily from the DNA of the ‘80s, yet the band reshape that heritage with a modern twist that leans into eerie textures and heavy grooves.

Rather than relying on nostalgia alone, they push their influences toward something sharper and far more mysterious.

Immediately, the track’s rhythmic focus stands out. The beat locks into a hypnotic pattern, and the synth lines move with a fog-like presence that surrounds the arrangement. Because the groove stays danceable and tense, it functions as the core engine of the song. There is a cinematic edge at work here too, one that nods subtly toward the atmosphere of classic Carpenter films. However, Hellkern Warriors shift that reference toward something more aggressive and shadowed.

The guitars contribute to this hybrid identity. While they hint at industrial heaviness, they never overpower the track. Instead, they support the low-end movements with metallic color and occasional surges of distortion. These choices give the song a blend that sits somewhere between a subdued Rammstein mood, the raw electronics of early Prodigy, and the gloom-laden energy of Type O Negative. Yet the band maintain a style that feels unmistakably their own.

The vocal approach deepens the track’s character. A rich, low timbre forms the center of the performance, and the tone carries an almost ritualistic quality. Subtle processing pushes the voice into a slightly distorted, shadowy space, creating a sense of ancestral force. It does not attempt dramatic theatrics; instead, it remains steady and controlled while still delivering emotional charge.

As the song progresses, the layering becomes more immersive. Keys shimmer with icy edges, the bassline pulses like a warning beacon, and the overall structure invites the listener to surrender to its momentum. Because the track never loses focus, it builds tension steadily without slipping into chaos. Each section unfolds with purpose, leading you into deeper territory.

Hellkern Warriors craft music that feels like a night drive through a city swallowed by fog: dangerous, stylish, and strangely addictive. Their fusion of industrial groove, gothic undertones, and electronic grit results in a single that leaves a strong impression and suggests a band with a clear artistic identity..

Born from early demos by vocalist Tom Radar — including “Hellkern Warriors” and “Petrol & Water” — the project was shaped by Kabal, Mauricio, and Fabian into a blend of electronic atmosphere and pulsating rock. Their debut video “Helkern Warriors” was released in September 2025, followed by “Petrol & Water” in November.

  • Ain’t Nothin’ Now is CAR287’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
CAR287 entertain us with Ain’t Nothin’ Now, a track that radiates the grit and confidence of musicians who know exactly where they stand.

Ain’t Nothin’ Now is CAR287’s Single Out Now

The single immediately places you in a world shaped by vintage energy, guitar-driven charisma, and a fierce dedication to real musicianship.

There is no sense of overproduction here. Instead, the band rely on instinct, texture, and human feel to build a song that moves with purpose and weight.

Although the track carries a classic spirit, it also channels the raw pulse of the ’90s. The guitar work especially highlights this blend. The solos feel instinctive rather than ornamental, yet they remain tuneful and expressive. They never slip into empty technicality; rather, each phrase supports the emotional arc of the music. Because of this, the melodic sense of the song remains strong even when the band lean into their more aggressive side.

The chord progression is another standout element. Each shift suggests a narrative, as though every chord has a memory attached to it. While the structure stays rooted in rock tradition, CAR287 shape it with enough nuance to keep the track fresh. Additionally, the arrangement grows naturally, and the transitions move smoothly between cadence and uplift. Consequently, the listener stays hooked through every turn.

The contrast between the verse and the chorus works especially well. The verse brings a steadier, almost restrained pulse, giving the vocals and guitars room to settle into a smoky, grounded mood. Then, as the chorus arrives, the energy expands. The melodic line lifts with emotional brightness, introducing a dreamy, almost nostalgic glow. It is in this section that the song reveals its heart: reflective, searching, and wide open.

Yet the element that defines CAR287 most clearly is authenticity. You can feel the hours of rehearsal, the lived experience behind the performances, and the trust between musicians. There are no synthetic backdrops, no quantized rhythms, no digital gloss covering up imperfections. Instead, the band rely on their chemistry, their intuition, and their collective history. The result is a song that breathes and pulses like something alive.

Ultimately, Ain’t Nothin’ Now shows a band unafraid to lean into organic rock energy while still allowing space for memory and melody. The track feels personal, as though CAR287 are reaching back to a musical past they love while shaping it into something distinctly their own. It is a strong release, and it suggests that this group will continue refining their identity through instinct, skill, and heart.

  • XTC is Wagner the Band’s Album Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Wagner the Band return with XTC, an album that thrives on groove, bold personality, and a deep respect for the past while moving confidently into the present.

XTC is Wagner the Band’s Album Out Now

The project is built on a foundation of rhythm and vibrant color, yet it refuses to settle into predictable territory.

Instead, each track feels like a scene from a larger story, shaped by attitude, atmosphere, and meticulous arrangement.

“Don’t Stop Movin’” sets the tone with a guitar riff that carries a warm retro shimmer. A slightly ‘70s-tinted keyboard joins in, adding character before the vocals push the energy forward. Soon the horns arrive, and the entire track blossoms into a funk-driven celebration. Because the bass line bounces with undeniable charm, it becomes nearly impossible not to sway along. The opener makes it clear that danceability and craft can coexist without compromise.

Immediately after, “Run Away with Me” introduces a more seductive pulse. The groove slinks rather than sprints, giving the song a confident swagger that recalls the strut of Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Yet Wagner the Band give it their own stamp through tight rhythmic phrasing and a vocal approach that feels both relaxed and intentional.

“Golden” shifts the mood with a neon-lit glow. There is a slight echo of Lenny Kravitz in the guitar treatment, but the emotional pull feels more intimate. The song leans into a reflective tone without losing the album’s signature sense of motion. Its warmth makes it one of the standout moments on XTC.

“Little Thief” brings back a bright, almost morning-fresh energy. The melody carries an open-sky feeling, like walking through a lively city as the day begins. In contrast, “Reptilian Attack” offers a thicker texture, wrapping the listener in a dense, whiskey-smooth atmosphere. Here, the production shines, allowing the vocals to ride the beat with precision while the arrangement builds tension without excess.

“Daisy” closes the album with sweeping keys that feel nearly cinematic. The track unfolds with a lounge-like tone, yet hints of futurism surface through the keyboard timbres. Because of this blend, the ending feels soothing and forward-looking, leaving the listener in a space where nostalgia meets tomorrow.

XTC is a refined and vibrant record, rich in groove, personality, and stylish craftsmanship—a killer blend that rewards every replay.

  • Rockin’ Coal In My Stocking is Effusion 35’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Effusion 35 light up the holiday season with a rock song that’s explosive and full of humor.

Rockin’ Coal In My Stocking is Effusion 35’s Single Out Now

“Rockin’ Coal In My Stocking” bursts forward with distorted guitars and a driving rhythm that instantly fills the room with energy.

The band successfully balances gritty rock intensity with a festive spirit, using sleigh bells and sparkling details that recall old-school holiday records — but with a modern punch.

The track’s rhythm section locks in tightly, giving the whole piece a dynamic momentum. The snare hits hard and crisp, like a blacksmith striking metal, while the bass anchors the groove. There’s no overproduction here; instead, the band relies on organic energy and a solid arrangement that feels honest and alive. Moreover, the mix allows every instrument to breathe — a clear sign of thoughtful production.

As the song progresses, the blend of rock edge and Christmas charm grows more addictive. The guitar work stands out, alternating between crunchy riffs and melodic fills that add color without clutter. The interplay between the main vocal and the background harmonies gives the chorus real lift, making it easy to imagine this song blasting during a wild December night out.

Effusion 35 clearly enjoy their craft. Their chemistry translates into the music: it feels spontaneous but controlled, energetic yet musical. The combination of vintage tones and modern execution makes “Rockin’ Coal In My Stocking” more than just a holiday novelty — it’s a track that could sit comfortably next to both classic rock anthems and contemporary indie hits.

With its mix of attitude, groove, and festive cheer, this single proves that Christmas songs don’t have to be sweet — they can rock hard too.

  • Astral Reflection – Rebirth is Apeiron Bound’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
Apeiron Bound return with “Astral Reflection – Rebirth,” a track that immediately demonstrates why the band stand apart in the progressive metal landscape.

Astral Reflection – Rebirth is Apeiron Bound’s Single Out Now

Instead of leaning on familiar formulas, they build worlds. They sculpt narratives. They approach each release not as a simple song, but as a multi-chapter experience that pushes stylistic boundaries with fearless precision.

The opening introduces a tone reminiscent of a sitar, an otherworldly mood that feels ancient and futuristic. This choice gives the piece an immediate identity, drawing the listener into a space where East-leaning colors merge with sci-fi atmospheres. Shortly after, the guitars erupt with a chord progression that borders on visionary, revealing the group’s commitment to dramatic storytelling. Because of this, the track unfolds less like a standard metal single and more like a cinematic overture.

As the rhythmic intensity increases, a fierce vocal delivery cuts through the mix. The harsher approach leans toward black metal expression, and it adds a sharp contrast to the song’s ethereal foundation. However, Apeiron Bound know how to shift gears effectively. They introduce moments where the arrangement suddenly empties, allowing classical-infused interludes to breathe. These quieter passages introduce elegance, and they help reinforce the track’s multi-dimensional character.

A striking transition arrives after the two-minute mark. The vocals unexpectedly soften into a melodic line, offering vulnerability that counters the earlier aggression. This moment does not last long, though, because the band dive back into heavier territory with renewed force. The dynamic push and pull becomes a defining element, showing how skillfully Apeiron Bound merge progressive ambition with emotional volatility.

Throughout the track, musical layers interact in surprising yet coherent ways. Distorted guitars, ornate harmonics, shifting tempos, and experimental textures combine into a structure that feels like a metal opera divided into interconnected chapters. Every section serves a purpose, and every shift builds momentum.

“Astral Reflection – Rebirth” ultimately stands as an exciting example of what happens when a band refuses limitations. It is intense, theatrical, genre-defying, and distinctly forward-thinking..

  • Come Back (When You Feel Like) is Every Other Weekend’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
“Come Back (When You Feel Like)” introduces itself with a guitar progression that feels timeless yet distinctly rooted in the ’90s.

Come Back (When You Feel Like) is Every Other Weekend’s Single Out Now

There’s an immediate emotional pull in the tone — something that recalls the sincerity of R.E.M. and the raw introspection of early Smashing Pumpkins.

However, Every Other Weekend doesn’t imitate those influences; instead, the project reshapes them into a sound far more personal and intimate. The nostalgia is there, but so is the freshness of a songwriter who understands how to merge memory with modern clarity.

The track grows gently, carried by a vocal performance that feels both vulnerable and steady. The timbre has a lived-in quality, the kind of worn warmth that makes a story feel truthful even before you understand every lyric. It’s the sort of voice that can sit comfortably at the center of an alternative ballad without forcing intensity. Instead, it guides you through the song’s emotional terrain with subtlety.

Furthermore, the arrangement supports that sensitivity. The guitars shimmer without overwhelming the mix, and the rhythm section holds a restrained pulse that allows the melody to breathe. Each musical choice feels deliberate, shaping an atmosphere that is nostalgic but never stale. There’s a sense of wandering embedded in the song — not lost, but drifting through memories, waiting for clarity to return.

As the chorus arrives, the emotional weight steps forward. The melody opens just enough to create a sense of release, though it never turns dramatic. This measured approach makes the track feel honest. It doesn’t shout; it reflects. And that reflection becomes the heart of the listening experience.

The production maintains that balance, giving the song a bittersweet glow. It has the warmth of a track recorded close to home, the kind where imperfection adds soul rather than distraction. Every Other Weekend shows that emotional depth doesn’t require volume — only intention.

“Come Back (When You Feel Like)” is a modern alternative ballad shaped by nostalgia, clarity, and understated power.

Come Back (When You Feel Like) is Every Other Weekend’s Single Out Now

Chris Bull—former frontman of Manchester indie-rock outfit City Reign—returns with a new creative chapter under the moniker Every Other Weekend. His forthcoming single, Come Back (When You Feel Like), recorded in his mother’s garage using his late father’s vintage equipment, blends jangling guitars, clattering drums, and a striking new lyrical candor. The track serves as the opening statement for his long-gestating album All Present and Inept, arriving in early 2026 after seven years of quiet evolution. Describing the single as “a hymn to self-forgiveness,” Bull channels the anxieties, disconnection, and seriousness of modern life into something simpler and more liberating—an invitation to stop overthinking and just play some music.

  • Dejavu is The Cyber Project’s Single Out Now

    Good Day Noir Family,
“Dejavu” hits with a bold force that feels raw and intentional, creating a surge of energy that never lets up.

Dejavu is The Cyber Project’s Single Out Now

The Cyber Project deliver a track that blends grunge grit with modern hard-rock fire, and the combination makes the song feel intense without slipping into chaos.

There’s a muscular quality to the guitars, and they strike with enough aggression to push the track forward while still leaving room for nuance.

The vocal tone carries a touch of Pearl Jam’s emotional weight, yet it remains rooted in the band’s own identity. It has depth, texture, and a rugged edge that pairs perfectly with the track’s heavy aesthetic. Moreover, the delivery reinforces the sense of urgency running through the entire arrangement, as if the singer is caught between memory and explosion.

The instrumental approach amplifies that tension. The riffs land like punches, tight and deliberate, while the rhythm section locks into a driving pulse that heightens the song’s impact. Additionally, the melodic variations keep the track alive and unpredictable. The band doesn’t rely only on power; instead, they shift harmonies and textures in ways that draw the ear deeper into the song.

A particularly impressive moment arrives in the bridge. The track suddenly steps back, allowing a tribal-leaning groove to open a suspended atmosphere. This shift creates a pocket of tension, a brief pause that feels like holding your breath before the plunge. Consequently, when the final section returns, the explosion carries even more weight. The guitars roar again, the vocals push harder, and the band close the track with a surge that feels earned.

“Dejavu” shows how The Cyber Project know exactly how to balance force and emotion. While the song is built on raw power, it never loses its sense of structure.
