Emerging from the frozen forests of Northern Michigan, Mothertomb have officially released their highly anticipated debut full-length album, Dying to Live , available now on all major streaming platforms and Bandcamp.
Blending the crushing weight of traditional doom metal with hypnotic stoner grooves, heavy psych textures, gothic atmosphere, sludge, and progressive songwriting, the independent quartet delivers an emotionally devastating debut that firmly establishes them as one of the underground’s most compelling new voices.
For fans of Black Sabbath, Windhand, Pentagram, Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, and Acid King , Dying to Live unfolds across five expansive compositions exploring suffering, transformation, transcendence, and the eternal struggle between darkness and light. Inspired by Welsh folklore and the shadowed depths of the human psyche, the album guides listeners through allegorical landscapes inhabited by ancient spirits, inner demons, and the unseen forces shaping the human condition.
The band’s name itself emerged from tragedy. During Northern Michigan’s historic ice storm of April 2025, more than 145,000 residents were left without power for weeks in below-freezing temperatures. As the members witnessed forests entombed in thick ice, both breathtakingly beautiful and devastatingly destructive, they found inspiration in what felt like Mother Nature’s own tomb. That striking contrast became the foundation for Mothertomb , perfectly reflecting the emotional and sonic duality found throughout the band’s music.
Created entirely as an independent DIY effort, Dying to Live was written, recorded, produced, and artistically directed by the band. Recorded at Death Box Records in Charlevoix, Michigan, the album was produced by Alton Minor alongside the band, with mixing and mastering also handled by Minor. The haunting artwork was illustrated and designed by vocalist Alice Gawlinski , completing a project that embodies Mothertomb’s uncompromising artistic vision.
Speaking about the release, the band states:
” Dying to Live explores themes of transformation, suffering, transcendence, and the timeless struggle between darkness and light. Through metaphor, allegory, and introspection, the album invites listeners into a world where darkness and illumination coexist. From crushing heaviness to moments of eerie beauty, this record is a journey through the depths of the human experience. Created entirely as an independent DIY effort, Dying to Live stands as a true labor of love, and we’re honored to finally share it with the world.”
Even before its release, Mothertomb had already generated significant buzz throughout the underground metal community with the singles “Beware” and “Mountain Hag.”
Steve Howe of Outlaws of the Sun praised “Beware” as:
“An intriguing and superbly executed proposition from MOTHERTOMB which has me excited to hear more from their upcoming debut album in 2026. Excellent and Highly Recommended.”
Michael D’Amato of Playgroundz Rocks described the single as:
“Dark, immersive, and heavy as hell… a statement. By the end, you’re left wanting more, and you know whatever comes next is going to hit just as hard.”
Spanish publication La Habitación 235 declared:
“One of the bands that could emerge as a new revelation in the coming years.”
Following the release of “Mountain Hag,” Outlaws of the Sun doubled down on their praise:
“Nothing short of a revelation with Mothertomb continuing their progression in perhaps becoming one of the best upcoming acts the underground scene currently needs right now.”
The band has also earned support from respected underground outlets including Doomed Nation , Progressive Rock Journal , Weedian , Stoner World Blog , Female Fronted Power , Monuments in Ruin , La Capsule Stoner , TRAIL of SMOKE , Hour of the Riff , and Sunday’s Heavy Tunes , further cementing Mothertomb as one of doom metal’s fastest-rising acts.
With Dying to Live now available worldwide, Mothertomb invite listeners to immerse themselves in a deeply atmospheric and emotionally resonant debut that balances crushing heaviness with haunting beauty, proving that even in the darkest places, transformation can be found.
