    DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Veins

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil’s Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It’s not your average desert island and we’ll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil’s Island we find Veins sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil’s Island?

    Find out now…

Welcome to The Razors’e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don’t worry about it’s name I’m sure it’s not as bad as that would suggest.

You’re marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn’t live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Dan: I would choose Diamond Eyes by Deftones. It is one album that I never get bored listening to and there’s a mix of heavy and melodic stuff. So something for every mood.

Scott: Gran Turismo – The Cardigans…which coincidentally has a song on it called Do You Believe, which Deftones covered and released on the digital version of Diamond Eyes! I just love that album, great songs, great production, sounds like it could have been released in the 90s, yesterday or 2067.

Stevie: Well, I wouldn’t grab my absolute favorite as it’s fucking depressing, so I’d want some upbeat bangers with the kpop demon hunters soundtrack. Them Huntrix girls crushed it on this album.

There’s also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What’s your tipple of choice?

Dan: Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water. Five aliens sitting on a load of hot dogs, holding a starfish. Simple but effective

Scott: Jeff Wayne’s musical version of War of the Worlds. I remember being obsessed with the artwork when I was a kid. It’s probably fueled my slight obsession with UFOs and Aliens.

Stevie: I’d have to have a poster of the White Album by the Beatles. I just fell in love with the artwork.

There’s also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What’s your tipple of choice?

Stevie: It’s gonna be a G&T in the sun.

Scott: A Long Island Ice Tea seems fitting….plus I’m going to need a five spirit drink to get me through this.

Dan: A Mojito, the first drink I go for on any holiday and every day’s a holiday on Devil’s Island

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Scott: A ‘Cave-In’ t-shirt I got from their show at The Garage in London about 20 years ago, on the Perfect Pitch Black tour, with Pelican supporting. I’ve loved Cave-In from their early Metalcore stuff but the Space-Rock era stuff was my favorite.

Dan: I have a rare t-shirt from the Misery Signals Malice X tour. It’s a bit tight nowadays but I’d go for that

Stevie: A Smashing Pumpkins pen to write on my Beatles poster and tally the days on the island.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Dan: Milky Joe and the Coconuts.

Stevie: Bob Mortimer to keep my spirits up

Scott: It would have to be my wife and sausage dog Frank…or Alan Partridge….yeah, Alan Partridge and my dog Frank… only joking… I’m going to be in trouble.

    DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Veins

There’s a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Scott: I’ll go with The Cure – Bestival Live 2011. I was at that show and they were awesome as always. It’ll remind me of happier times on a different island (Bestival was a festival on the Isle of Wight).

Dan: Underoath – Survive, Kaleidoscope is the first one that comes to mind. It’s an amazing high energy performance that I’ve watched many times

Stevie: The Blueman Group, Live in London.

Scott: Not sure if you’re joking…

You’re getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Stevie: Dave Grohl. I reckon he’s got a boat.

Dan: Rod Stewart, apparently he’s a competent sailor.

Scott: Ooh, I see what you’ve done there… yeah, I second Sir Rod.

You’ve been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There’s only one thing for it… which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

    Dan: Scott

    Stevie: Scott

Scott: Well, the first bite is with the eye, as they say, so that makes sense… I don’t normally eat meat so this is going to take some getting used to but it would have to be Dan…there’s more meat..Stevie looks gristly. I’d use Stevie’s shins as a toothpick.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Dan: The musician that has inspired my playing and songwriting most is probably Branden Morgan of Misery Signals. The musicality in his playing is something I have always aspired to.

Stevie: Bez from Happy Mondays. His dedication to the arts, deep lyrics & an unbelievable talent has always inspired my writing style and dress sense. In reality it’s probably Thom Yorke. He has inspired my writing style from being such a fan growing up. He’s very unique in his writing style & I always wish I had his voice. Who doesn’t?!

Scott: I don’t really know…I like Simon Gallup’s sound and persona, so I’ll say him. He’s going to get bloody sick of that live Cure album.
