Progressive alternative rockers Pure Reason Revolution return with their new album ‘Terrifying Angels’, their fourth since reemerging in 2019. The record will be released on the 25th September 2026, and is preceded by the single ‘Spin Like Fire’, the video for which you can watch now here:

Following the somewhat gentler, moving themes of sorrow and transience guiding 2024’s ‘Coming up to Consciousness’, the new sound is dark and potent, full of savage riffs, ominous soundscapes, and thrashing, grungy layers – melded, of course, with the band’s signature transcendent harmonies. “The last record was more chill, so it just felt terribly natural to do something grittier, heavier and more aggressive,” Courtney explains.

The core trio of Jon Courtney, Annicke Shireen & Ravi Kesavaram are joined by a cast of collaborators for the album, featuring old friends and new partners alike. The eponymous song was born out of a jam session in Portland, Oregon, with founding bandmate Greg Jong, who also co-wrote “Rumination Ruin”. Meanwhile “Haywire Heart” and “Hold Your Wrath” – respectively the shortest and longest tracks in PRR’s discography – were both written alongside Paul Mullen, the alt-rock legend who fronted Losers and Yourcodenameis:milo. Finally, “Below Radiance” grew out of a section from a composition by Courtney’s mentee Kenny Fitzgerald.

The album also features bass contributions from Mariusz Duda (Lunatic Soul) and Kristoffer Gildenlöw, while mixing duties are once again handled by Bruce Soord of The Pineapple Thief.

The album (featuring artwork by Carl Glover), will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold LP edition and as Digital Album.

I would love to understand the rationale for picking “Homework” as a band name. That’s what a young Glasgow indie band did, and I just want to know what it means. Did they intentionally pick a name that you can’t really Google and that generally has negative connotations among basically all the people who ever had to go to school? Did they just name themselves after the Daft Punk album, despite their music offering no indication that they’ve ever even heard the Daft Punk album? Also, do people even use the word “homework” in Scotland, or do they call it “revising” or something? So many questions! I’m just a curious guy!

California Grammy-nominated metal band In This Moment have returned with anti-abuser single Crawl, the first taste of their newly announced ninth studio album Witch.

The song, released today (July 17), comes with a glossy music video, available to watch below. Singer Maria Brink calls the lyrics “a reckoning – a reflection that those who dominate and cause pain will ultimately reap what they sow”.

She continues: “As above, so below. The fall is inevitable. Bearing witness to the harm they inflict, the song declares that those who once stood tall will be brought to their knees.”

Guitarist Chris Howorth adds: “Crawl is a visceral track that delivers the undeniable observation of powerful entities dominating and abusing the weaker and compromised masses: something that continues to repeat itself throughout human history. The song empowers and, at its core, is about standing up and fighting back.”

Witch, the follow-up to 2023’s Godmode, will come out on August 28 via Better Noise (Five Finger Death Punch, Sabaton, The Hu), marking the band’s first release through the label. Press materials say the new album “showcases every side of In This Moment: the fury, the femininity, and the fire. It’s an 11-track opus that does not relent in intensity and introspection”.

The tracklisting and artwork have been revealed and can be seen below, as has the list of guest stars who’ll appear. US post-hardcore outfit Dayseeker will be on opener I Want To Believe, with Aussie alt artist Kim Dracula on Heretic. L.A. Ink TV host Kat Von D is lined up to perform on a cover of Pink Floyd’s 1979 three-part suite Another Brick In The Wall.

Brink says of the album: “Witch is my declaration of inner transformation. It’s about embracing the duality within – taking pain, persecution and struggle – and alchemising them into strength and power. The album reflects both ancient trials and my own journey: where being a ‘witch’ means being a creator, connected to the universe, manifesting my own reality.”

In This Moment have a busy autumn touring schedule in place for after Witch’s release. Following a standalone show in La Crosse, Wisconsin on September 17 (supporting labelmates Nothing More) and a set at Louisville festival Louder Than Life on September 19, the band will co-headline across the US with Hollywood Undead.

Formed by Brink and Howorth in 2005, In This Moment broke through with their 2014 album Black Widow, which reached number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart. In 2021, their song The In-Between was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, but lost to Bum-Rush by Body Count. Their 2013 single Whore was certified Platinum in the US in 2022.

The band have collaborated with a number of successful musicians, such as Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford, Shinedown singer Brent Smith and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G. They’re also known for their array of cover songs, including takes on material from Radiohead and Phil Collins.

Parker Barrow returns with Hold The Mash, their second full-length album and the follow-up to 2023’s Jukebox Gypsies. Continuing to draw from Southern rock, blues rock, and classic hard rock, the Nashville outfit shows a clearer sense of direction this time around, refining rather than reinventing the formula introduced on its debut.

Fronted by vocalist Megan Kane and drummer Dylan Turner, Parker Barrow takes its name from the notorious criminal duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, although the reference serves more as an inspiration for the band’s identity than as a recurring theme. The current lineup is completed by guitarists Alex Bender and Will Tipton, bassist Kyle Priber, and keyboardist Eric Safka, whose contributions help give the group a fuller sound.

Musically, Hold The Mash is rooted in blues rock but incorporates elements of Southern rock and classic hard rock. Slide guitars, blues-based riffs and a warm, organic production dominate the record, recalling bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and The Black Crowes without relying entirely on imitation. While the album rarely strays far from its established sound, the songwriting is consistently strong enough to keep things engaging from beginning to end.

“The Healer” gets things underway with tasteful slide guitar work and establishes the album’s bluesy direction. “Blinded” raises the bar, pairing a rugged Southern rock riff with one of Kane’s strongest vocal performances on the record. “Novocaine” shifts slightly toward straightforward hard rock, recalling the grit of Bad Company or Nazareth while retaining enough Southern flavor to fit naturally within the album’s flow.

The quieter moments prove equally rewarding. “Olivia Lane” begins as a restrained acoustic blues piece before gradually expanding into an electric finale where the jagged guitars and swaggering vocals take over beautifully. “Ruby’s Reckoning” follows a similarly stripped-back path, blending acoustic blues and folk influences into one of the album’s more understated but unexpectedly satisfying tracks.

The closing epic, “My Morning Song,” serves as the album’s centerpiece. Stretching past the eight-minute mark, it begins as a swaggering Southern rocker before opening into an emotionally charged, organ-enriched midsection highlighted by a superb guitar solo that recalls some of The Allman Brothers Band’s finest moments. From there, the song carries its momentum through to a strong finish, its bluesy swagger and soaring guitar work remaining firmly in the spotlight.

Hold The Mash may wear its classic influences proudly, but it does so with enough personality and strong songwriting to avoid feeling merely nostalgic. It is a very solid sophomore effort that confirms Parker Barrow’s growth as a band and suggests there is still plenty of road ahead for them.

A gripping, tenacious, pummelling piece of electronic-crossing darkness, it’s a creepy and callous offering that showcases the sort of malevolent forces the band are willing to deal with.
