Rufus Publications has announced that Pantera, a fully authorized coffee table book from photographer Ross Halfin, is now shipping. Copies can be ordered here, and a new video of the band discussing the book is posted below.

Halfin has spent the past few years with unrestricted access to Pantera on tour, backstage, on days off and, naturally, on stage during the shows. The book documents the current lineup in full, and Halfin also went back through his large Pantera archive for photos of the original four, including “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and Vinnie Paul Abbott. The result is an often unseen look at one of the world’s most celebrated metal bands, with Pantera shown in the raw.

The book is an oversized A3 portrait volume of more than 300 pages, built to let the photos take up room. The edition ships in an embossed slipcase with a diamond plate look. Only 666 numbered copies exist, and each is hand-signed by the touring lineup of Philip Anselmo (vocals), Charlie Benante (drums), Rex Brown (bass) and Zakk Wylde (guitar).

Pantera is one of the best-selling heavy metal bands ever. The lineup of Anselmo, Brown, Darrell Abbott, and Vinnie Paul Abbott made a run of groundbreaking albums, and the 1994 release Far Beyond Driven debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The band has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. In 2022, Billboard reported that Brown and Anselmo were reuniting for Pantera‘s first major tour in 22 years. The new lineup played its first shows in 21 years in Latin America at the end of 2022 and has toured the world since.

Vinnie Paul Abbott and Anselmo were not on speaking terms up to the drummer’s death in June 2018, and Vinnie Paul Abbott had indirectly blamed the vocalist for his brother’s death.

Vinnie Paul Abbott and Darrell Abbott co-founded Pantera. On Dec. 8, 2004, Darrell Abbott was performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, when a gunman with schizophrenia shot and killed him on stage. The man believed the members of Pantera were stealing his thoughts.

Vinnie Paul Abbott, Darrell Abbott‘s brother, and Anselmo had not spoken since Pantera broke up in 2003. Things grew more hostile when Vinnie Paul Abbott suggested that comments Anselmo made about Darrell Abbott in print only weeks earlier could have pushed the killer toward the attack.

In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night marks Lugubrious Garment’s first full-length release, though AMG readers may recognize man-behind-the-band Gabriele Gramaglia’s (GG’s) other projects. Cosmic Putrefaction introduced me to his corner of the metalsphere, assaulting listeners at the intersection of blistering hostility and star-bound synths. Vertebra Atlantis¹ earned high praise from Dear Hollow on both their LPs, in particular 2023’s A Dialogue with the Eeriest Sublime and its fusion of dissonant death metal and blackened atmospheres. Despite In the Wide Vale’s debut status, I approached its stylings with some expectations of what I might hear. Given GG’s generally warm reception in AMG’s annals, does In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night maintain this trajectory or send me into a Lugubrious lament?

Although Lugubrious Garment will sound familiar to fans of Gramaglia’s other ventures, In the Wide Vale’s best touchstones exist outside them. Lugubrious Garment inhabits interstices between metal genres, blurring the lines between progressive death metal and technical thrash emboldened by lightly blackened frills. Defacement and Suffering Hour stand out as reference points (“…And Therein Plant, unto Their Souls Asunder,” “Transient Wounds, Spiritual Wilt”), although Lugubrious Garment forsakes dissonance in favor of sharp, serpentine riffs and dense arrangements. The resulting chaos weds Individual Though Patterns-era Death mixed with early 90s Gorguts (“Innocence as a Burden, Guilt as a Weapon”) in unholy matrimony, and the scope of ideas kindled by these descriptions affords a brief glimpse into the frenetic undercurrents seething In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night.

Compositionally, In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night sweeps through labyrinthine corridors with hurtling instrumentation that lends Lugubrious Garment intrigue and unpredictability. The strings on “…And Therein Plant, unto Their Souls Asunder” add depth to the track when they swell with sorrow while Claudio Invidia’s (Devoid of Thought, Nefastis) drumming batters via unerring grooves that drive songs in a jazzy style at once precise and relaxed. The focal point, though, is GG himself, as In the Wide Vale churns in a vortex of violent riffs tugged hither and yon by the winds of various genres. “…And Therein Plant, unto Their Souls Asunder” and “Transient Wounds, Spiritual Wilt” deal in scrambling death metal leads that scurry in restless fervor, and though “Profaned Fountain of Leaden Waters” begins similarly, it shifts into mid-tempo, heavy metal builds halfway through. “Eulogy of Deliberate Malevolence” kicks off with thrash-coded riffing that wouldn’t be out of place on a Miscreance or Dissimulator tune, and appears again on “Innocence as a Burden, Guilt as a Weapon.” On top of the guitar acrobatics and fluidity, GG plays bass and synthesizers while laying down sufficiently moldy, worm-ridden roars,² and the net effect sees Lugubrious Garment skitter and slither in genre-bending audacity.

Lugubrious Garment covers vast tracts of aural ground on In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night, and they’re all rich and vivid. In addition to the intricate riffcraft, GG’s bass bludgeons its way into the mix with meaty grooves and a subtle tone that brings the oomph when needed but otherwise doesn’t overpower. It’s a nice touch on an album whose ambition occasionally edges past its cogency, which indexes my only qualm about In the Wide Vale—Lugubrious Garment throws so much into their compositions that some opportunities for further cohesion and tension slip past. Passages swarm with riotous pleasures guaranteeing unbridled fun from moment to moment, but the songs don’t always consolidate into something greater than the sum of their parts. “Profaned Fountain of Leaden Waters” ends with a beautiful, lilting piano piece, and although the keys faintly twinkle throughout the track, I find myself wanting more dynamic pacing during its seven-minute run. Closer “Eden Fades Like Blurred Nightmares” succeeds in this vein, but the reprieve’s impact could have been amplified earlier in the track list. Also, Andrea Morgan’s violin and viola on “…And Therein Plant, unto Their Souls Asunder” gleam with symphonic splendor when featured, but seem underutilized considering what they achieve in the spotlight.

In the Wide Vale of Uncreated Night never fails to supply a good time, and even after several listens I catch details I missed eighteen times before. Lugubrious Garment triumphs on their first LP, and for a guy constantly cooking up new music and projects, GG proves his well of ideas runs deep and refreshing. In the Wide Vale provokes excitement and curiosity about where Lugubrious Garment might go next, and given GG’s productivity I hope I don’t have to wait too long to discover what awaits beyond the Uncreated Night.

Zebra is back after a 23-year gap with Zebra V, the band’s fifth studio album, due Nov. 13. The longtime trio of Randy Jackson (guitar, vocals), Felix Hanemann (bass, keyboards, vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums, vocals) has 11 new tracks ready, the first studio batch from the group in over two decades.

Jackson and Gelso recorded the album in their home studios, with producer Jack Douglas handling part of the production. Douglas produced the band’s 1983 self-titled debut and its 1984 follow-up, No Tellin’ Lies.

Zebra V will land on all major streaming platforms, with CD and limited-edition cassette versions also planned. Two limited-edition vinyl pressings, one zebra-striped in black and white and one 50th-anniversary gold edition, follow on Dec. 4. Pre-orders are open here.

The record runs from the opening riff of “Dog Day Night” to the string-laden closer “Eulalie,” and the band sounds energized and adventurous throughout. The 11 tracks pull from the mix of influences that have shaped Zebra over five decades. “The Conqueror Worm,” “All Your Love,” “Love, Sex” and “She’s Waiting For You” each show a different side of the group. “Direction,” a staple of the live set for years, gets its first studio recording here. “I’ll Be There Beside You” is a classic rock ballad co-written with Skid Row‘s Dave “Snake” Sabo and Rachel Bolan.

The rollout starts with lead single “Walk With You,” co-written by Jackson and Kiss‘s Paul Stanley. The song carries the sound that built Zebra‘s global following and shows a band that is still creatively charged more than 50 years after forming. The video for “Walk With You” is posted below.

Jackson said, “It was great working with Jack Douglas again after 40 years. “Walk With You” is a song I wrote years ago with Paul Stanley.

“Jack listened to the demo and loved the song. His magic brought the song to life and I’m really proud of the way it came out. I think Zebra fans are going to love it.”

Zebra will tour behind the album, with dates already on sale and more to come.

The band is the longest-running American rock outfit still touring with every original member. The trio has played together every year since 1975, for 51 consecutive years.

Zebra formed in New Orleans in 1975, and Jackson, Hanemann and Gelso are still the original lineup five decades later. After building a following in New Orleans and Long Island clubs, the band signed with Atlantic Records in 1982 and put out its self-titled debut in 1983, produced by Douglas. The album went gold, stayed on the Billboard chart for eight months and peaked at No. 29, which marked Zebra as one of the era’s most distinctive American rock acts. Follow-ups included No Tellin’ Lies (1984), 3.V (1986) and Zebra IV (2003), all of which locked in the band’s place in rock history.

The group is known for strong live shows, solid musicianship and a blend of hard rock, progressive rock and classic influences, and it has toured heavily throughout its career. That staying power comes with fresh creative energy, as the new music is aimed at longtime fans and a younger audience alike.

Zebra now moves into its sixth decade with Zebra V, its first studio album in more than 20 years and a new chapter for a band that keeps moving forward.
