Reuel
Congratulations on the release of your debut EP, “Exhumation Evilean”. How is it being received so far?
Evilean
Thank you so much!! Going into this release, not knowing how my music would be perceived, felt like a leap off a cliff, but a leap I had done my best to prepare for, there’s a whole lot of vulnerability attached to putting yourself and your creative work in the public eye for the first time.
I believe it’s being received well, better than I ever could have expected actually, I’ve had many great features, in many reputable metal magazines, radio station features etc, and coverage which I’m so grateful for, more than I ever could have asked for…
Reuel
That’s great to hear! What, in your opinion, makes Evilean stand out among other death metal bands today?
Evilean
Firstly, I would be honoured if Evilean stands out amongst the many great metal bands out there!! If Evilean does stand out, I guess being a female metal songwriter & playing metal always is going to make people wonder and be curious.
What I’m playing and singing is quite aggressive & raw with real, heavy subject matter for a female too.
Working with the talented musicians I did on this EP also, Robin Stone on drums, makes these songs stand out, he turned these songs into killer Death Tunes, that man is a drum god, and I’m blessed to have him consecrate my songs…They would not be the songs they are if it weren’t for him…
And having Jim Ramses (based in Germany – Ex Brainstorm), another talented musician, having Jim writing and recording bass guitar helped exhume the low end sounds of Evilean also.
The element of difference also with Evilean is I’ve recorded this EP in a non-traditional way, I’ve done this all on my own, I write guitar tracks, lyrics, and record both guitar and vocals at home in my studio, and produce demos myself, not with other band members as such.
Reuel
Brilliant. Your hardwork and creativity is clear on the record. What themes inspired you while writing and working on “Exhumation Evilean”?
Evilean
The EP was inspired by real experiences; all my songs are based on true stories and true events in my life… just through a darker more aggressive lens.. it’s a threshold between fiction and embellishment. experiences through my eyes and my perception …themes of death, violence, aggression, power, and some real heavy topics … that when I was writing, I almost felt I was exposing myself, but it was part of the necessary process of writing this EP… it was being exhumed.. somewhat with an enigma to the transparency nonetheless.
Reuel
Your EP includes 5 killer songs. Which song seems to be the fan favourite so far? And are you surprised your fans preferred that song?
Evilean
Thank you so much again!!
…Hmmm probably “Lost Cause’ being the debut single off the EP and because its accompanied by a music video, and that was the introduction of Evilean to the metal multiverse, and being the debut single and having the music vid, I thought that song would gain the most attention.
And DOD – Damzel of Death – my song that has reference to Aileen Wuornos
Reuel
Releasing music in 2026 involves so many musical and non-musical tasks, like marketing and social media. What has been your favourite and least favourite part of that process?
Evilean
Yes!! So much involved!! There’s a lotta behind the scenes tasks to be completed to make it all work.
My favourite part has definitely just been given the opportunity in this lifetime to promote music that I created, to show ppl the finished product of what I had spent so much time on creating, that feeling of accomplishment is indescribable, the time, effort and skill as well as so many other feelings that came with creating this music and in turn this EP, that feeling is priceless…to be able to share what I have created…. It makes all the blood, sweat and tears along the way, worth it….it’s the ultimate reward…if I had to name a least favourite part, it’s just the time it takes to take care of everything, while still maintaining other parts of your life.

Reuel
What musicians can you credit as the ones who inspired you, personally, in your life or career as a musician?
Evilean
Chuck Schneider – Death, man, he was talented, to write & play the technical songs he did and sing at the same time? Brilliant, talented soul.. learning some of his songs pushed me to new limits, so much respect as a musician for him… another Maxiiiii Cavalera!! I was and still am so inspired by Maxi, how he could make a simple riff sound heavy and chunk AF!! I also have a lot of respect for Helmuth Lehner – Belphegor, he creates his own music how he wants, is not bothered by what other musicians are doing, or what they think, he does not care.. I myself have that one lane focus, all I’m worried bout is my own vision and my own music.
I have been inspired by his music to write music with black metal tones for my upcoming album. I like the mixture of Death/Extreme/Groove/Thrash & Black metal..
I also admire Prika Amaral of Nervosa, she is awesome musician!! She reminds me of me in a way, awesome guitarist/songwriter and vocalist. I love Nervosa they got some sick tunes; I’d be happy if I wrote those songs!! Bunch of talented women!!
Reuel
Creating art often feels like holding up a mirror. What was the biggest lesson you learned about yourself while making “Exhumation Evilean”?
Evilean
Very much so !! As mentioned earlier, it felt almost like I was exposing myself…. Like I was letting people almost see inside my soul..I learnt that its ok to have controlled vulnerability. ..I’m in the drivers seat.im only explaining as much as I choose to explain, as it’s controlled by yourself how much you do let out, and some is left open to interpretation … its ok to show people parts of yourself, even if you’re not sure.. fear it and do it anyway…music is art and art is expression to be let out into reality…and stepping way outta my comfort zone in doing so…
Reuel
With your EP released, are there any plans for the near or far future you’d like to share with us?
Evilean
I’m currently in the process of writing my album, I’m excited bout that, the songs I’ve written so far, I love playing them , I love the sound of them and they’re next level from the EP I believe…They sound sik!! ….Yes, I’m planning on playing gigs in the future, that’s in the pipelines.. And I want to do another music vid, making the last music vid was like we were in our own little creative world for a couple of days, it was certainly inspiring working with other talented, skilled creatives too, and we all had a lotta fun making it.
Reuel
Great plans! What are your thoughts on how women are represented in music today, and what do you think can be done to promote more inclusivity and support for female musicians?
Evilean
I believe women are embraced, respected and included in metal, and music, men create awesome music and so do women, I personally love watching and listening to men play metal music!! They’re so good at it! And that’s why I guess they dominate metal music, cause they’re good at it!! I also love to watch sick female musicians play too though…there’s some awesome female musicians out there in the metal scene too.
That aggression with metal comes a little more naturally to men, doesn’t mean women can’t compare to them, it’s just not as common… But if women feel they want to play metal music, like I did, no inhibitions!! Let the she–beast escape!
It comes down to skill, talent and ability, that’s an even playing field I believe, men and women both bring different elements to music and I believe they already are supported and included..in metal anyway… me as a female musician, I’ve never felt I’ve been treated differently as a musician, just because I’m a woman, you can either play/create or you can’t.
Reuel
Thank you for your time, Evilean! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Evilean
If any women who love metal out there have thought about maybe they would like to learn an instrument, or write songs, try vocals, my advice is, the time is nigh, if you have the niggling feeling that just wont go away, pay attention to it, even if you doubt yourself, do it anyway, regret is harder to handle and deal with than failure is, at least if you failed, you tried, and you’re learning. Every great artist once was learning too and failed many times.
And thank you so much to FemMetal for giving me the opportunity for this interview, much appreciated xxx

This Friday, April 17th, Teen Suicide will release their new album, Nude descending staircase headless, on Run For Cover Records. Today they’re sharing one more early preview with their buoyant new single ‘Suffering (Mike’s Way).’
Nude descending staircase headless is Teen Suicide‘s first ever proper studio recording and marks the start of a new chapter for one of the most unique and impactful bands in modern indie rock. The album was recorded/produced by Mike Sapone (Taking Back Sunday, Oso Oso, Cymbals Eat Guitars) and its leap in fidelity alchemizes all of the personality, nuances, and raw edges that make Teen Suicide special. The result is an immediately gratifying release that’s faithful to the band’s earlier music while also moving boldly forward.
Earlier singles ‘Idiot‘ and ‘Spiders‘ introduced this heavier, hi-fi, fuzzed-out version of Teen Suicide, but ‘Suffering (Mike’s Way)’ shows off another side of Nude descending staircase headless. It’s an upbeat slice of jangly indie punk with bubbling keyboards, huge hooks, and even a surprisingly optimistic lyrical outlook.
Guitarist and vocalist Sam Ray discussed the new song, saying: “‘Suffering (Mike’s Way)’ was one of the first songs we started writing for this new record. I started working on it in 2022, not long after we started performing live again. I wanted to write something with the same propulsive energy of The Feelies, The Thermals, Wire. Jonathan Richman. That was our jumping off point, and it just sort of evolved from there. The song earned its parenthetical because Mike (Sapone, our producer) was adamant we amend the vocal melody in the chorus by a single note, and though I fought him on it at first, we tried it both ways and he was undoubtedly correct.
Lyrically, it’s harder to pinpoint – despite the name, I consider it one of our more optimistic songs. It’s a sort of love song. It’s a song about the world. About living life. About getting clean from opiates. How much better it is to feel everything than nothing. It’s really just a song about movement – forward momentum. All the times you think you can’t go on and then you just do, somehow, and suddenly you’re looking back at it all. And even then, you’re still moving.”

Over the years Teen Suicide has gone through many sonic evolutions, and the influence of Sam and Kitty Ray’s entire musical constellation (including TS alter-ego American Pleasure Club, Starry Cat, The Pom-Poms, Kitty, Ricky Eat Acid, and many more) can be felt in all corners of underground and even mainstream contemporary music. But Nude descending staircase headless is new territory even for these exceptionally pioneering artists: it trades the band’s usual lofi process for a widescreen studio sound combined with some of their most visceral songwriting to date. “On the older records everything was self-recorded, home-recorded, on a laptop or on tape, and always with really limited resources,” Sam says. “I think we became known for that but it was also very limiting to be seen as a lo-fi band.”
Nude descending staircase headless is aggressive, catchy, intimate, and its lyrics are just as ambitious as the music, as the Rays wrestle with nihilism, addiction, and what it even means to try and make lasting art as the world embraces the path of least resistance at every turn. It’s a truly sweeping rock album that’s sure to please longtime fans and offers the perfect jumping on point for new listeners of Teen Suicide‘s dense catalog.
Teen Suicide have also announced a lengthy run of North American tour dates with Cloud Nothings, Liquid Mike, University, Pure Hex, and more. See full itinerary here.

YES – Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood, and Jay Schellen—are proud to announce their 24th studio album AURORA will be released on June 12 via InsideOutMusic/Sony Music. As Howe explains: “Making this record was joyful, a chance to play, explore and give everything to the music. It’s always been about collaboration, somebody can write a song, but until everybody puts their contribution in it isn’t really a Yes song. We’re not trying to echo the past; we’re carrying the spirit of Yes forward and turning it into something new.”
The band have also launched the first single from the album, with a beautiful animated video for the title track, created by Matt Hutchings (Greg Lake, Oasis, Iron Maiden), posted here: https://youtu.be/ETEGJTM6plw
Aurora will be available as a Limited Deluxe 180g Light Green 2LP+2CD+Blu-ray Artbook & Poster, as well as a Ltd Deluxe 2CD+Blu-ray Artbook, both featuring the stunning artwork of Roger Dean and Freya Dean, as well as a bonus disc of instrumentals, and a blu-ray featuring Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound & 24bit stereo mixes (by Curtis Schwartz). The album is also available as a Gatefold 180g 2LP + LP-booklet, Special Edition CD Digipak & as Digital Album. Pre-order now here: https://yes-band.lnk.to/Aurora

The tracklisting is as follows:
When YES first began sketching out ideas for what would become Aurora, the process was loose and exploratory. There was no preconceived concept at the start, just a collection of musical fragments that gradually began to find one another and take form. Among these early sketches was a piece titled “Aurora,” and it quickly became clear that the name carried certain gravity. It suggested light, emergence, and a sense of vastness, qualities that resonated deeply with the band. Jon Davison remembers how “the title immediately resonated with Steve Howe and sparked visual inspiration for artist Roger Dean, setting a conceptual tone that would guide the project.”
Work on Aurora began almost as soon as the ‘Classic Tales of Yes’ tour ended in 2024. The idea of a new album surfaced quickly and with the label’s encouragement, the band had the time to develop material organically. Rather than gathering in a single studio for months, they embraced a modern workflow; ideas were born in home studios, shaped independently, and then woven together through constant collaboration. Downes and Howe often acted as the central creative axis, with Howe, as producer, serving as the point through which all ideas eventually flowed.
Across Aurora, each track carries its own character. Some echo the classic approach, others push into new territory, but together they form a cohesive whole that honors the band’s heritage while embracing forward motion. With their 24th studio album, YES demonstrate not just longevity, but a sustained curiosity, a desire to keep exploring, refining and discovering their capacity to create.
