Careful Gaze releases crushing new LP, ‘IT DOES NOT SLEEP’ was originally published on HM Magazine by Nao Glover.

Mastodon has taken its name literally. The Atlanta band is offering a limited-edition vinyl pressing of Marrow Deep with ground-up fossilized mastodon teeth mixed into the wax.

A fan gave the band the fossils about 20 years ago. They were too rough to put on display, so they sat around waiting for a purpose. With bone at the center of the new album’s title and theme, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders started thinking about working them into a record. Pressing plants around the world turned the idea down for weeks before Loma Vista Recordings found a taker in Waxworks Records.

The University of Georgia’s geology department then pulverized the fossils into particles fine enough to leave sound quality and playability untouched. The band visited the plant, sprinkled the bone dust by hand, and pressed each copy. A “making of” video went up on its social channels Friday.

Only so much bone dust exists, so the run is capped at 170 copies. To give collectors an even shot, some of them are being sold through a draw. Register here to get a chance at one.

Mastodon is currently on the road for The Poisonous Weapons tour, a U.S. run with Deafheaven and Alcest in support. The trek reaches the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on Saturday, heads east and wraps at Sick New World in Dallas.

Marrow Deep landed on August 28 through Loma Vista Recordings. It is the first Mastodon full-length since guitarist Brent Hinds was fired in March 2025. He died five months later in a motorcycle accident. The band co-produced the album at its own West End Sound studio in Atlanta with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High on Fire, Converge). Andrew Scheps (Adele, Black Sabbath, Metallica) handled the mix. It also marks the first album with new guitarist Nick Johnston, and keyboardist João Nogueira contributes heavily.

The second single, “Snakes For Dinner,” brings in Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. He previously guested on the 2006 Mastodon song “Colony Of Birchmen.”

Sanders, drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor, and guitarist Bill Kelliher also looked back on Hinds in the recent documentary The Mastodon In The Room. The three address Brent‘s death head-on, saying they wanted fans to hear their side after the speculation and headlines that followed.

If you’ve navigated your web browser to stereogum dot com today, you likely know Colin Meloy first and foremost as the frontman for longstanding bookish indie-folk greats the Decemberists. But for a segment of the population, Meloy is best known as the author of the Wildwood Chronicles, a series of fantasy novels aimed at teens and preteens, set in his native Portland and illustrated by his wife Carson Ellis. (We talked to him about it in our We’ve Got A File On You interview.) Wildwood, the first of those books, has been adapted into a stop-motion animated movie, and unsurprisingly, the Decemberists are on the soundtrack.

You may have noticed that Josh Homme, deep into the rollout for the new Queens Of The Stone Age album Perfecth, is looking really, really good these days. Homme was always handsome, but he’s clearly got one of these faces that gets more interesting as he ages. He’s 53 now. He’s about 6’4″. His eyes are a piercing blue. He dresses in interesting ways. He’s got dangly earring and tattoos on his fingers. He projects a certain calm authority. There’s just a lot to like there. People have noticed.
