DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Fail The Enemy

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil’s Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It’s not your average desert island and we’ll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil’s Island we find Fail The Enemy sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil’s Island?

Welcome to The Razors’e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don’t worry about it’s name I’m sure it’s not as bad as that would suggest.

You’re marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn’t live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Nathan: I’m taking somewhere over the rainbow by IZ if I’m going to be stranded in paradise then I’m doing it right, hollowed out coconut cups, jack sparrow rum cellar, to a ukulele soundtrack, don’t rescue me, I’m right where I want to be.

Elliot: For me it would be Creed, Greatest Hits. I would have picked Human Clay however I couldn’t survive without being able to belt out ‘One Last Breath’ or ‘My Sacrifice’ if i’d have just chosen that so this way I get the best of everything. Also, being stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere with my two best mates belting Creed out to sea sounds like a vibe I want.

Leah: I would take the Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album. Bit of a mouthful I know. I don’t why, I just like the album.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to sleep in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose and why?

Nathan: Seal. Any Seal album.

Elliot: I would say Stranger in this Town by Richie Sambora. I love every track on that album and he is the reason I wanted to play guitar. And also, i think the colour scheme would match the walls of the shack really well.

Leah: As a poster, I’d pick the Sgt Pepper album cover purely for the use of colour. There’d be plenty of colour on the island I imagine but i just think it’s a great image.

There’s also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What’s your tipple of choice?

Nathan: Aside from the pirate rum cellar that I was told I could have, I’d have asahi on draught, I’m just holding out hope that one of my bandmates have decided to get stranded with a working fridge or a cooler.

Elliot: I am assuming that there wouldn’t be electricity to have a cooler, and because we’re on a desert island, it’ll have to be rum, but out of a barrel. Mind you, me and Nath used to be incredible at consuming that whilst at uni so there would have to be a lot of it.

Leah: This is a tough one. Do they do Yorkshire Tea? I’d wanna pick the tea. BUT, then I might fancy a vodka orange. BUT, then I’d be stuck with an alcoholic drink for the entirety of my stay. BUT, we don’t know how long we’ll be there. Do I get drunk as a skunk with my 2 bandmates and ease the stress of the situation or should we have at least one sober straight thinking person there?! This is hard!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Nathan: My Parkway Drive hoodie I think, in case the nights got cold.

Elliot: I also agree that it would have to be a hoodie. My favourite hoodie is my big Sleep Token one. That would keep me cosy.

Leah: My black Beatles jumper. Everyone close to me will have expected this answer, it’s literally a comfort blanket at this point.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Nathan: Not a clue to be honest, they are my best mates. I think I’d count myself lucky to be stranded with them and not some Randy who might try to strangle me in my sleep for keys to the rum cellar.

Elliot: What Nathan said. We’ve all got each other’s backs and we’ve all played enough video games that I reckon the three of us would do alright.

Leah: A survival expert and an engineer, surely together they can craft some kind of working boat!

There’s a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Nathan: Creed in 1999 at Woodstock, one of my favourite live moments. I watch it religiously every couple of months or so.

Elliot: Bon Jovi – Wembley 1995 or Depeche Mode – Rock am Ring 2006. Purely for the vibes. I used to watch both so much growing up and both are my two favourite bands of all time and I couldn’t choose between them.

Leah: Any live Slipknot show from 1999 to 2009. Literal chills.

You’ve been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There’s only one thing for it… which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Nathan: We’d only need Ell’s legs I reckon, he can still play with just his upper body, and if he wanted to go on a walk or owt we could strap him to my back like yoda, it’s the most practical choice.

Elliot: Whilst I see Nath’s point, I do need my legs to change my guitar sounds otherwise I’d have to use my head or elbows so I would argue his legs are more expendable than mine.

Leah: I’d have to agree with Nathan’s answer. I can’t think of a better one. It is the most logical course of action I suppose.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Nathan: Joel Quartuccio from being as an ocean

Elliot: Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi

Leah: Bbno$, I wouldn’t say i’m influenced by him but he would definitely bring good vibes and a party to the situation!

Live Review: Fear Factory – O2 Ritz, Manchester

It’s difficult for a band in any genre to remain relevant for three decades. Let alone a band like Fear Factory, pioneers of the industrial metal movement! Since their groundbreaking “Demanufacture” album in 1995, or blockbuster seminal release “Digimortal” 6 years later, they’ve always been a band that others are compared to. Though unlike what the lyrical themes of the band’s music would dictate, humans aren’t machines, and for various reasons, the people in bands eventually leave. Burton C. Bell, the voice behind those iconic albums and a constant in the band’s history departed, and filling his almighty shoes would be the much younger Milo Silvestre.

Many people in the UK were introduced to the Italian stallion in August 2025 as he was thrown in the deep end and had to perform vocals on an iconic album “Demanufacture” during their Bloodstock Open Air main stage performance. He stepped up to the task, and on this night in Manchester, he would have an opportunity to play other songs in the band’s storied discography, as well as newer material he had had the chance to make his mark on the band with.

Early 6pm doors had meant that the O2 Ritz was very sparsely populated by the time The Nocturnal Affair had taken to the stage. Though the upstairs balcony was open so that was a good sign; Shadow Of Intent headlining Manchester Academy just down the road hadn’t cannibalized the crowd too much. Despite the small numbers, the Las Vegas natives were not half-assing things and played with the same energy and conviction then if they were playing to a full venue. Frontman Brendon was warm, charismatic and engaging, describing the UK as the band’s second home and confessing his love for a ‘proper cup of tea’. As charismatic as he was fearsome behind the mic, the tip of the spear for the band’s melodic hard rock sound. We also learned that their drummer for the evening had filled in only 24 hours notice after the regular man behind the kit Kyle had suffered appendicitis whilst in Italy! A cover of ‘What Is Love’ ensured they ended a very short 30 minute set on a high, and showed that they deserve a much bigger crowd!

From melodic hard rock to blackened death metal, Poland’s Hate were up next. They’re no strangers to the city having levelled Rebellion just down the road in February 2023, in one of the band’s strongest performances! Since then, they had added the new album “Bellum Regis” to their vast discography, with the album’s title track opening up the evening. Though it was really older classics like ‘Erebos’ and ‘Sovereign Sanctity’ that seemed to get bigger reactions from the crowd! A crowd which had grown to a much more respectable level now! Whilst it still may have been too early to have seen the same level or carnage they caused on that night in Rebellion, seeing the band utilise the superior lighting rig and sound system portrayed them as a genuine powerhouse and underrated force in the world of extreme metal!

The night was as eclectic as it could get genre-wise. From hard rock to blackened death metal and now modern metalcore in the shape of Japan’s Crystal Lake! We were introduced to the band’s drummer who treated us to a rather excellent drum solo…and that was just the line check! He was soon joined by his four band mates as the lights went down for the 3rd time this evening. They immediately asserted themselves with that blistering high energy metalcore sound, with the mix flawless and sharp to bring out the best in every single one of them. Given the relentless energy they were pumping out, this high-end production quality was the latest they deserved!

“JUMP MANCHESTER!”

A little ambitious of an instruction given the age profile of the crowd, and the fact that we were all a little bit bigger than we were in our teenage years and early 20s.

“CIRCLE PIT!”

Look, if we weren’t going to jump, what makes you think a circle pit would open? Although a space opened, the lack of activity and movement felt a tad awkward. Maybe tone down the enthusiasm and…oh hang on! It wasn’t long before people started hurling their bodies around. No need for demands now, like day turns to night, the pit was full in motion. In some ways, this felt like the wrong crowd. Imagine if they had joined the likes of Fit For An Autopsy or Sylosis, metalcore adjacent bands with younger crowds who have graced this venue in recent times. Though in other ways, this was a much welcome and somewhat necessary injection of dynamism into the evening. The X-Factor and unknown quantity to many, they left Manchester with many people knowing their names and for all the right reasons!

“DINO! DINO! DINO!”

The venue much more full now, the crowd began shouting for their hero, genius and driving force behind Fear Factory Dino Cazares. Whereas there was an ocean of space for when The Nocturnal Affair had taken to the stage, that space was now very much a luxury. Get a good spot now or regret it for the rest of the night. The lights went down for the final time and the roar was deafening! The band took to the stage, and all eyes were on Milo. Could he pull it off?

The account opened with ‘Acres of Skin’. Close your eyes and you couldn’t have been able to tell if it was Burton or Milo singing. Just like that sunny Saturday afternoon in Catton Hall Park, Milo more than captured the trademark grit and aggression from Burton, as well as the soaring opulent cleaner quality in the clean choruses. Any doubters should well and truly be put in their place now! By the time ‘Powershifter’ made its way into the set, the crowd were practically doing Milo’s job for him by singing the choruses back at him! That’s when you know you’ve won as a band…and Fear Factory were more than winning! Introducing Crystal Lake vocalist PK for a cameo in ‘Edgecrusher’ felt like a genuine passing of the torch moment and touch of genuine class. Though seeing PK stage dive into the crowd almost upstaged Milo and co. Though it was clear who people had come to see tonight.

The pits were well and truly in motion now, with Milo needing not to ask or direct this. It just happened. People going airbourne, a wall of death. It was carnage. That carnage became too much for one person who was turfed out for his rather poor display of drunken Kung Fu which has no place in the pit!

“Death is nothing to be afraid of, the mind moves on!”

It took a while but we got there eventually. The new single ‘Robotocist’ and the first time Milo had truly been given the chance tonight to put his own mark on the band tonight. The Manchester crowd were the first people in the country to hear this played live, and amongst the first in the world! If this is a glimpse into the future, then the future of Fear Factory is in very safe hands! Milo proved that he’s not only an adaptable performer but a crucial cog in the wheel that is Fear Factory!

“I don’t want to live that way! I don’t want to live that way”

It had to come. The zenith of the set. Arguably their biggest hit ‘Replica’. The underlining and exclamation mark on a powerhouse of a headline set. Not only are Fear Factory remaining relevant, they are well and truly thriving well into their 30 plus years as an undisputed juggernaut in the metal scene!
