In a display of utter devastation and dark grandeur, post-deathcore act BURIAL PATH have unleashed their foreboding new offering, “Lilitu” featuring guest vocals by Abigail Bexx. “Lilitu” is accompanied with a powerful performance video. The track follows the band’s previous harrowing single release “A Display of Penance”.
Abigail Bexx shares, “There’s a quiet pressure that comes with being a woman in extreme music. Before you open your mouth, people have already decided what you’ll sound like, what you’ll be capable of, or whether you belong at all. ‘Lilitu’ was born from that tension. It’s about every woman who’s ever felt reduced to someone else’s expectations and choosing to stand anyway.”
Guitarist Matthew McClure comments, “‘Lilitu’ is about rejecting imposed identity. The song progresses through several emotions, from recognizing the oppression of imposed identity to reclaiming one’s true identity and the freedom from that imposition. This is a psalm of rejecting the ‘authority’ that imposes identity and fighting the ideology that sustains it.”
In “Lilitu”, BURIAL PATH unearth obliterating intensity through crushing rhythms, deafening gutturals and ethereal orchestration. The power and anguish of this track is inescapable. The musical arrangement provides no moment of rest; the momentum is unceasing from its onset. “Lilitu” exposes the suffering and oppression of women. Lyrically, BURIAL PATH draw upon religious imagery and ideas that are often used to reinforce patriarchal inequality.

Here is their Summer Schedule ( see below)
– through the beginning of September.
This summer brought the welcome news that Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema had reactivated her Black Bananas project for an album with new label home Fire Records. We soon learned that album is called Bad Bunch, and we heard its lead single “Turkey Burgers.” The track was a revelation, a zonked chillwave-funk jam that made me feel like I was surfing this website at the dawn of the 2010s and reading breathless reports about Brooklyn warehouse parties. I’m pleased to report that the next single is just as good.

Last month Told Slant announced their new record What’s Up and released the lead single “Manhattan.” Today the NYC indie mainstay is back with some more quintessential NYC indie, this time in the form of a beautiful yet bleak song called “Draw Blood.”

Dutch metallic hardcore band Visceral Contempt got together in 2023 but the seeds were planted much earlier, when members’ former band Human Demise broke up a decade earlier. Members of the older band reunited when guitarist Willem wrote what would become Visceral Contempt’s demo, The Raid, joined by members of Dark Intentions, Pigteeth and No Turning Back.
After having some success on the back of The Raid, Visceral Contempt cooked up a new batch of songs, inspired by Ringworm, Merauder and All Out War. Titled Sequester, there’s a distinctly metal outlook to the guitar tone and vocals, balanced out by the groovy-but-punky rhythm section. Like The Raid, Sequester focuses on themes of human and political violence.
“The EP talks about the gruesome actions and filthiness of humans and governments that provoke a visceral reaction—whether it’s the madness of religion (‘Dogma’), death by guillotine (‘Mouton’), imprisoning one’s own daughter (‘Sequester’) or torture involving rats (‘Rodents’),” Visceral Contempt tell Decibel. “The title track envisions the despair and anger around the true story of Blanche Monnier, who was locked up for 25 years by her own mother.”
Sequester is out later this week, August 7, on WTF Records. You can hear the full EP now, though, via Decibel, along with a reissue of The Raid.
