Dave Mustaine: Metallica Was “Holding Me Back” But “We Should Be Friends”
Man, what are we going to do when Megadeth finally calls it quits one day and we’re left bereft of Dave Mustaine constantly talking about that time he was in Metallica?! There was a time where you could set your watch on that shit, but that all will one day come to an end. We’ll one day never again hear about how he was once in Metallica or how the people he considered friends at one point were constantly tried to hold him and Megadeth down over the years.
Thankfully, that day hasn’t come yet, as fresh off the heels of his band’s final studio album release ever, Dave Mustaine couldn’t help but yap about Metallica again during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. As he glimpses at his retirement coming over the horizon, the 64-year-old shredder is looking back on his years and the rivalry he’s held with Metallica.
And while he’s sounded like he wants to get together for a tour or something and be best buddies again, he also reflected on how he feels he was wronged by his former brothers in arms. After all, it was his fury at Metallica for his sudden ousting that led to Megadeth’s creation in the first place. That anger boiled over into the public square and well, the rest is history. And it’s a history he still feels was constantly against him.
“Think of it. Where would I be right now if I didn’t have one of the biggest bands in the world spending their time trying to hold me back? They don’t do it anymore, but most of the time when they did, it just made me shake my head. And it wasn’t just Metallica, it was everybody. For a long time, it very much was me against the world. It was like, OK, if you’re not with me, you’re against me.”
Despite once again adopting that tone about his old bandmates, Mustaine also in that same interview talked about how he wants to mend fences and try to befriend the likes of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich again. He even said his band’s cover of “Ride The Lighting” was part of that effort, even if he doesn’t really care if Metallica knows about it at all.
“There may not be a chance to ever say hello to James or Lars again. I knew some people would have a hard time with me doing the song, but that’s OK because I wanted to pay tribute and show my respect. If they like it, fine. If they don’t like it, fine. If they listen to it, fine. If they don’t, fine.”
Eventually, he reflected on his time with Metallica and his ousting, stating that it was all just an unfortunate circumstance involving kids with traumatic experiences early in their lives.
“You know, I had a great time when I was in Metallica, and we did something tremendous. It’s a shame what the booze did, but we were all kids and, aside from Lars, we came from pretty broken families. Lots of stuff has happened over the years, but I felt like it would be great to make everything good with them before we stop. We should be friends. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be friends.”
