    Tonight I’m off to Bristol, not only to get my first taste of The Prospect Building, but to see Dance Gavin Dance on the UK leg of their European tour, supported by As December Falls and Dwellings.

    I’ve arrived early to get my bearings, as I haven’t been to The Prospect Building before and wanted to check it out. The outside area has some great chill-out spaces, plenty of food wagons and a huge bar to relax in before, during and after the gigs. Inside, it’s essentially an old plastics warehouse that has been converted into a live venue, and they use the space well. So, let’s get inside and check out our first band of the night.

    Not quite at full capacity yet, Californian Dwellings (7) natives take to the stage to big cheers from those who arrived early to check them out. From song one, we get pure talent. No matter what influence you hear in each song, there is something interesting going on, from the emo yet soulful vocals of Isaac Wilson to the post-hardcore drumming of Thomas Reilly.

    Being my first time seeing Dwellings, I’m immediately struck by the number of different grooves the band manages to work into their songs. Isaac takes time between songs to thank Bristol, saying, “The best place so far in the UK, as it’s our first time here.” Not that the crowd needs any more encouragement, as they’re already singing along and happily bouncing away.

    A standout song for me is actually the first song the band released back in 2016, Lemonade. It’s filled with dreamy vocals and that great post-hardcore guitar sound, with plenty of atmospheric detail. By this point, both the band and crowd seem to be locked into a kind of slow-motion mosh.

    The band have a great way of taking you down with almost R&B-inspired beats before suddenly changing structure and launching into math-rock madness. It’s a great start to the night, and I really enjoyed my first time seeing Dwellings.

    Drinks and a little breather later, we’re back inside to catch the next band of the night, As December Falls (7). Unlike the other bands tonight, they’re from Nottingham, so they’ve played Bristol a few times since forming in 2014 and know what to expect from a Bristol crowd on a Friday night.

    The band walk onto the stage with beaming smiles and get straight into things with big energy from note one. It would be a crime to simply describe this as a pop-punk band, as you can hear so much coming through in every song. There are nice touches of pure rock riffing, alongside great melodies from vocalist Bethany Hunter.

    Hunter has a very strong and powerful voice that could easily match Hayley Williams for range and dynamics. Everyone here seems to bounce along to every song coming from the stage for the next 45 minutes.

    A standout song for me is the track the band created for the video game Muse Dash. It has lots of nods to old-school video-game sound effects, but it’s also a great driving song that gets your feet moving and your head moshing. Chunky guitars and really good electronic-infused samples run throughout, while the band still manages to keep its pop-punk sound going right up to the final note.

    The band have really good chemistry on stage and feed off each other extremely well. Another good set from a band I haven’t seen before, but would happily see again.

    Time for tonight’s headliners.

    I started listening to Dance Gavin Dance late, during the great toilet-paper shortage of 2020, but since then I’ve grown to really enjoy putting any of the band’s albums on while I’m doing things. There’s such variety and pleasure to be found in their music that I never quite know what I’m going to get when I press play.

    By the time Dance Gavin Dance (8) walk onto the stage, The Prospect Building is absolutely packed. The crowd goes wild, and they go even more crazy when we kick into the first song, Animal Surgery, from the band’s latest album, Pantheon.

    The band go back and forth throughout the night between older material and the new songs from Pantheon, which provides a very nice balance for both old and new fans alike. At the end of the first song, vocalists Andrew Wells and Jon Mess demand, “Let’s open up the pit!” The crowd happily obliges.

    We go all the way back to 2007 with Lemon Meringue Tie from the band’s album Downtown Battle Mountain, and it sends everyone here crazy. Beforehand, Andrew tells everyone that he has had permission from security for crowd surfing. Before he’s even finished his sentence, I think we already have someone on their way down to the front as the band launches into the song.

    The immense sound of DGD live certainly confirms to me why I like this band. I love the sudden changes of pace in their unique post-hardcore sound. We get progressive guitars that blend softer touches with all-out fast chugs, alongside drums that will have your head confused about what mosh pace you’re supposed to settle on. It’s all sprinkled with evil screams and powerful, strong melodic vocals.

    A standout song for me is Speed Demon, released as a single in 2024. The melodies are pure bliss, with strong solo playing from guitarist and founding member Will Swan, before the song kicks into a heavy ending that keeps everyone jumping straight into the next song.

    The band eventually bring the night’s set in Bristol to a close with another track from Pantheon, the crazy All The Way Down. Then, for the final song, we get the last track from the band’s 2018 album Artificial Selection, Evaporate.

    Dance Gavin Dance have taken this crowd to the limits tonight with their brutal yet soulful mix of progressive post-hardcore, proving exactly why the Sacramento natives are one of the very best progressive post-hardcore acts around — and have been for a long time.

    A very strong night from all three bands, with each bringing something different to The Prospect Building. Dwellings provide the technical and atmospheric opening, As December Falls bring huge energy and infectious melodies, and Dance Gavin Dance finish the night by completely tearing the roof off the place.

    Three very different takes on modern alternative and post-hardcore, but a combination that works extremely well on one bill. For a first visit to The Prospect Building, Bristol certainly delivered.

    Built around heavy metal foundations and a sprawling conceptual mythology, Seasons of Hell takes listeners deep into the strange and sinister world of Kurio , the curious one who serves as the central figure throughout the band’s evolving narrative. Through Kurio’s journey, Portals of the Tomb Guard explores the darker corridors of human existence, the afterlife, demonic realms, rebellion against corrupt powers, and the mysterious forces responsible for designing and shaping worlds beyond our own.

    The origins of Portals of the Tomb Guard began simply enough. What started as a group of musicians meeting every week to jam for fun gradually developed into the possibility of creating something much larger. Drummer, guitarist, vocalist, and longtime musician Morgan Heck joined forces with Steven Eddie , whose background and conceptual approach helped establish the project’s lyrical and musical direction.
    When Eddie and Heck entered the studio, the project initially evolved under two separate identities, Portals of the Damned and Tomb Guard . As the music and mythology continued to develop, the two entities eventually merged into one, giving birth to Portals of the Tomb Guard .
    At the heart of that evolution was Kurio.
    Curious and relentless, Kurio travels through a world filled with darkness, confronting the Kings of Theron , figures representing selfish rulers and established powers, while experiencing concepts surrounding death, the demonic world and realities beyond the known. His journey eventually leads toward the mysterious Inbetwixt , entities gifted with the ability to understand and conquer the puzzles of existence, becoming builders of puzzles and ultimately builders of worlds.
    Seasons of Hell serves as another chapter in that expanding universe.
    With Steven Eddie handling vocals and guitars, Morgan Heck contributing drums, vocals and guitars, David Lammons on bass, and Cameron Brown on keyboards, Portals of the Tomb Guard combine a traditional heavy metal foundation with theatrical darkness and a growing conceptual narrative.
    The album was produced and recorded by Steven Eddie at Hard Wall Studios / Bee Cave Records , with mixing and mastering handled by Rick Greenwood of Geneva Post Audio .
    And this chapter is far from the end.
    With the band’s lineup now established and a new project already underway, Portals of the Tomb Guard are preparing to delve even deeper into the world of Kurio, expanding the mythology and continuing the journey through the realms that exist beyond the familiar.

    The Grand Theft Auto series has always placed a huge emphasis on its soundtrack, as you already know if you spent any formative time speeding around Vice City and bumping “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” or “Broken Wings.” The long-awaited new installment Grand Theft Auto VI, which got a Tom Petty-soundtracked teaser way back in 2023, will finally arrive this fall. Presumably, the game will include a ton of music, both new and old. Some of that new music will appear on a 34-track soundtrack album. Based on what we now know, that record will feature some big names.

    On ‘Far and Wide’ The Pineapple Thief feel more like a rock band than ever. Still progressive. Still masters of spine-tingling atmosphere. Still attuned to the strange, troubled world around us. And now, a decade and seven albums on from the arrival of Gavin Harrison on drums – and newly signed to InsideOutMusic – they capture the chemistry, road miles and bigger stages of the last few years.

    Far and Wide is the sound of a group with dreamlike complexity at their fingertips, channelling it into hard-hitting, incisive songs.

    “We realised, for instance, that you don’t need more than two guitar parts at any one time,” frontman/founder Bruce Soord says. “You know, ’why have we got four or five guitars? Why have we got six-part harmonies when there’s only three of us singing?’ We deliberately created those constraints, because we thought, ‘we’re a rock band, there’s five of us on stage, this is what we should be about in the studio.’”

    “You do start to imagine what a song would look like on a stage, and sometimes that does influence the arrangement,” Harrison adds. “Like, ‘this would be amazing live when we do this, if this section just went into this other thing’, and you can picture it with the lights and the atmosphere on stage.”

    Far and Wide will arrive on several formats, including a Ltd 2CD & Blu-ray artbook which includes the bonus track ‘Daylight’, as well as a second CD of instrumentals and a blu-ray featuring Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD 5.1 Surround Sound & 24/48 Stereo Mixes. The album will also be available as a Special Edition CD Digipak, Gatefold LP (in several colour variants) & digitally as both stereo & Dolby Atmos. All formats feature the striking cover image of an abstract sculpture by the late Michael Schoenholtz, father of Harrison’s longtime partner Hannah. 

    Founded in 1999 by Bruce Soord, the band has long been one of the genre’s most successful and accomplished outfits, releasing 16 studio albums and touring worldwide. The band consisting of Soord (vocals, guitars), Jon Sykes (bass), Steve Kitch (keyboards), and Gavin Harrison (drums).

    Japanese Breakfast mastermind Michelle Zauner became an author back in 2021. That’s when she published her memoir Crying In H Mart, an expansion of a New Yorker article about reconnecting with Korean food and culture after losing her immigrant mother. The book became a sensation, earning a ton of critical acclaim and debuting on the bestseller list. Zauner signed on to write and soundtrack a movie adaptation, which sadly got stuck in development hell. While all this was happening, Zauner kept making music with Japanese Breakfast. She also kept writing, and she announces her second memoir today.

    Connecticut death metal outfit What Weapons Bring War have unleashed their latest single, “Crown of Blood,” featuring Devin Swank of Sanguisugabogg , delivering a brutal and psychologically charged descent into nihilism, human agency, and the consequences of choice.
    Released September 10, 2026, “Crown of Blood” serves as the first chapter of What Weapons Bring War’s upcoming two-song digi-pack EP, Crown of Blood / Noose Rot , now scheduled for release October 5, 2026 .
    “Crown of Blood” presents a reimagining of the death of God at the hands of one man, then turns its attention toward the aftermath. Having confronted his choices and discovered the immense power and agency he possesses, the protagonist is left to reckon with what that realization means.
    Rather than offering easy answers, What Weapons Bring War plunge directly into the existential fallout.
    The song paints a bleak and nihilistic portrait of humanity while challenging listeners to consider some of existence’s deepest questions: What gives life meaning? What happens when passion becomes obsession? How much agency does an individual truly possess, and what are the consequences of discovering that power?
    Caught somewhere between revelation and destruction, “Crown of Blood” exists within a “bloodlust surreal,” where violence, existence, and meaning become increasingly difficult to separate.
    The track features Devin Swank of Sanguisugabogg , bringing additional death metal firepower to What Weapons Bring War’s latest assault.
    The accompanying music video premiered through Slam Worldwide on September 10 , coinciding with the single’s release and providing a visual counterpart to the track’s dark conceptual foundation.
    Now, What Weapons Bring War are using the weeks ahead to build momentum toward the full release of Crown of Blood / Noose Rot . The two-song digi-pack EP will arrive October 5, 2026 , giving the band and label additional time to expand the campaign and complete new visual material, including an upcoming visualizer.
    With “Crown of Blood,” What Weapons Bring War aren’t interested in offering comfortable answers. They leave the listener standing in the wreckage, staring directly into the consequences of choice, power, mortality, and existence.
    The bloodlust has only begun.

    “Ascension” is the newest single from Texas-based progressive metalcore practitioners, FERVENCE. The track appears on the band’s impending new full-length, Constructs, set to drop on October 16th through Metal Blade Records.

    Comments founding guitarist Trent Odneal, “‘Ascension’ came about because I felt like the album really needed chaos – short, fast, and seemingly out of left field. Kind of like a fever-dream with a fleeting moment of reflection before it slips away, only to be pulled back into the chaos.”

    Inspired by bands like Deftones, Architects, and Silent Planet, the FERVENCE sound is an ethereal blend of harsh and lush, navigating between moments of sheer aggression and poignant vulnerability. Formed in 2019 in Reno, Nevada as Odneal’s solo project, FERVENCE released its debut full-length, Ghost, in 2020. The recording was called an “emotionally laden and hard-hitting record that contemplates what it is to be human.”

    The band reemerged in 2023 with vocalist Stevie B. at the helm, bringing her unique brand of aggression to the project. FERVENCE toured the West Coast, continuing to build their local following in Reno opening for the likes of Otep, Left To Suffer, and Gideon, and releasing four singles that would make up their second offering, an EP titled Realm//One which was praised for “breaking so many rules in metal.“

    On Constructs, the quintet’s Metal Blade debut, FERVENCE delivers eleven dynamic songs that explore, both musically and lyrically, deeply personal experiences surrounding life, death, emotion, and relationships. Now based in Austin, Texas, the band spent 2025 crafting their most fully realized songs to date. Writing post-Ghost, Odneal made a conscious effort to leave more space for the vocals to explore melodies and focused on composition, mood, song structure, and building up to big choruses.

    “As we have grown together and individually so have our views on existence and the concepts discussed. Constructs,” Odneal explains, “is a refinement of our ability to convey some of these thoughts in a more generally relatable way, while also adding a bit more insight on other tangential topics.”

    The title track, for example, is a “concluding thought to a note that I wrote to myself that began when we did the Ghost LP,” says guitarist Austin Bentley, “We all take different paths that shape who we are and who we eventually become. But those paths are just constructs of thought stored in memory. Some good, some terrible, but all of them contribute to the people we are now. Though these things can feel monumental or cosmically important while we’re living through them, they always collapse in the end. We still die. We still disappear. We live, we learn, we die.”

    Constructs was produced by Odneal and Bentley and mixed and mastered by Zack Ohren. The record will be released on CD and digital formats as well as vinyl in the following color variants:
