Imagine finding out, deep into middle aged, that you’re the son of the honey-gargling king of yacht rock. Michael Goessling, a St. Louis resident, recently had just such an experience when he found out that he’s Michael McDonald’s son. For his whole life, Goessling knew that he was adopted. His parents conceived him when both of them were 14 years old, and he was put up for adoption as an infant. But Goessling didn’t learn until much later that one of his parents grew up to become Michael McDonald.

Conrad “Cronos” Lant, the bassist and vocalist who steered black metal pioneers Venom for more than four decades, has died at 63.

Venom confirmed the news in a post on the band’s official social media, which reads, “IN MEMORIAM — Conrad ‘Cronos’ Lant. It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we share the news that Conrad ‘Cronos’ Lant has passed away.

“For more than four decades, Conrad‘s voice, bass and vision were at the heart of Venom. From the first dark rumblings of Welcome To Hell, through Black Metal, At War With Satan, Possessed and beyond, he created something that changed heavy music forever.

“Venom never followed the rules. They forged their own path. And Conrad was there at the centre of it all — uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable.

“The Legions have always been an important part of Venom. To everyone who stood with the band through the years, bought the records, came to the shows, wore the shirts, shared the music and kept the flame burning — Cronos was always grateful for your loyalty and support.”

Nathan Lant, Conrad Lant‘s son, also paid tribute, saying, “I want to thank all of the Legions for all of the support you have given my dad over the years. I know he really appreciated you all. He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on. The legend of Cronos will never die.”

Venom‘s latest studio album, Into Oblivion, landed in May through Noise/BMG. It is the band’s sixteenth full-length and its first batch of new material since 2018’s Storm The Gates. The most recent lineup paired Conrad Lant with guitarist Rage (a.k.a. Stuart Dixon) and drummer Danté (a.k.a. Danny Needham).

Before his death, three separate outfits were working the Venom name on stage. Conrad Lant led the version featuring the last original-era member. A new collaboration between co-founders Jeff “Mantas” Dunn and Anthony “Abaddon” Bray has announced festival appearances in 2026 to mark 45 years of 1981’s Welcome To Hell. Then there is Venom Inc., headed by Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan, who was in Venom from 1989 to 1992 and played on Prime Evil (1989), Temples Of Ice (1991) and The Waste Lands (1992).

The classic Venom trio of Dunn, Conrad Lant and Bray cut four studio albums, Welcome To Hell (1981), Black Metal (1982), At War With Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985), plus the live record Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1986). Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost and Mayhem are among the acts that have named the band as a major influence, and it remains one of the most revered of its generation.

Tommy Thayer comments on the record: “I’ve always loved doing projects like this because they give me a chance to step outside of my usual world and just create, play guitar, and have fun making music. Dan and I go back a long way, and it’s been great getting to know Bengt and Ikiz over the past year and discovering the chemistry we have together. Shogun Mojo really came from that shared energy, getting in a room, playing, writing, and seeing where it took us. There’s a great spirit and camaraderie in this band that comes through in the music, and I’m excited for people to finally hear what we’ve created together.”

“This debut album is a reflection of all the rock records that Tommy, Bengt, Ikiz, and I grew up listening to! Even Brion James from my band Dan Reed Network has a co-write on the album called Funk Party! What we captured in the studio is playing live together like bands did in the 70s, and the outcome is a record that’s a groovy, rowdy funk rock celebration of life. At least that was the goal”, added Dan Reed. “In a world of AI music, we took it back to the roots of having fun writing in a room together and recording in a room together.
